Objectives of restorative massage
After the cast is removed, the muscles lose volume and strength, the joint is limited in movement, and the tissues are swollen. Massage reduces swelling by improving lymphatic drainage, restores muscle elasticity and prepares them for stress, and also softens developing scar adhesions. They start with gentle techniques above and below the damaged area, gradually moving to the area itself. Massage is always combined with physical therapy - only together they provide full restoration of function.
What does massage give?
Massage improves blood circulation and lymphatic drainage in the affected area, relieves muscle spasm, reduces pain and increases mobility. For chronic back and neck pain, it is included in standard treatment regimens along with physical therapy.
The effect is cumulative: after one session, temporary relaxation occurs, and a lasting result appears by the end of a course of 8–10 procedures.
