Viral hepatitis B and C
Viral hepatitis B and C are chronic infections that affect the liver and remain asymptomatic for years. This is their main danger: a person feels healthy until cirrhosis or liver cancer develops. However, the situation with their treatment has changed radically over the past decade. Hepatitis C today can be cured in the vast majority of cases with a course of tablets lasting 8-12 weeks. Hepatitis B cannot yet be completely cured, but it can be reliably controlled, and most importantly, there is a vaccine against it.

Sore throat (acute tonsillitis)
Sore throat, or acute tonsillitis, is an inflammation of the tonsils. The main practical question for a sore throat is not “what to gargle with,” but “what kind of sore throat is it?” The vast majority of cases are caused by viruses and go away on their own, and antibiotics are useless. But in about every fifth adult, and more often in children, the cause is group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus - and it is this that can cause complications in the heart, joints and kidneys. It is possible to distinguish them, and for this there is a simple test that takes a few minutes.

Salmonellosis
Salmonellosis is an acute intestinal infection caused by Salmonella bacteria, which reach humans most often through eggs, chicken and dishes that have stood for several hours in a warm place. It all starts violently: nausea, vomiting, cramping pain in the abdomen, profuse watery stools and fever. It looks scary, and therefore the first thing most people do is take out an antibiotic from the home medicine cabinet. Meanwhile, in the normal course of salmonellosis, the antibiotic does not reduce the disease, but often lengthens the period during which the bacteria continue to be excreted in the feces, that is, it prolongs the time when a person is infectious to others. The real treatment is much more boring and yet saves lives: replenishing lost fluids and salts. The difference between what appears to be a treatment and what it is determines both the course of the disease and its outcome.

Dysentery (shigellosis)
Dysentery is an intestinal infection caused by Shigella, in which the main attack falls on the large intestine. Three things distinguish it from other intestinal infections. The first is contagiousness: to get sick, a few dozen bacteria are enough, while salmonellosis requires hundreds of thousands. Therefore, Shigella easily spreads from person to person through hands, door handles, toys and shared utensils, and the outbreak covers a family or kindergarten group in a matter of days. The second is the nature of the stool: it is scanty, frequent, with mucus and blood, and not copious and watery. The third feature goes against the usual rule: for dysentery, an antibiotic is really needed, unlike most other intestinal infections. Hence the main practical conclusion - blood in the stool cannot be treated with home remedies, this is a reason to see a doctor on the same day.

Typhoid fever
Typhoid fever is a severe bacterial infection in which the pathogen enters the body with water or food, but is not limited to the intestines: it penetrates the blood and spreads throughout the body. That is why the disease does not begin with diarrhea, but with slowly, day by day, increasing fever, headache and increasing apathy, and diarrhea in adults is often absent altogether or replaced by constipation only in the second week. The main practical problem arises from this feature: in the first days the illness is mistaken for the flu or overwork, treated with antipyretics and time is wasted. For our region, the topic remains relevant, because the spread of typhoid fever is directly related to the quality of water and street food sales, and susceptibility to it is universal - the disease once suffered does not protect for life.

Adenovirus infection
Adenoviruses are a group of viruses that cause respiratory, eye and intestinal diseases. Adenoviral infection differs from other acute respiratory viral infections in its protracted course and combination of symptoms: the temperature lasts longer than a common cold, at the same time there is a runny nose, sore throat, enlarged lymph nodes, and often conjunctivitis with redness of the eyes. It is the combination of pharyngitis with conjunctivitis that makes this infection recognizable. Mostly children of preschool and primary school age are affected, and outbreaks are typical for children's groups and swimming pools. In most cases, the disease goes away on its own and does not require antibiotics.

Amoebiasis
Amoebiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the protozoan Entamoeba histolytica. Infection occurs when cysts are ingested with unboiled water, unwashed vegetables and herbs, or through dirty hands. In the colon, the amoeba penetrates the wall and forms ulcers, hence the main symptom is prolonged diarrhea with mucus and blood, abdominal pain and painful urges. The danger is that the parasite is able to enter the liver with the blood and form an abscess there, which is manifested by fever and pain in the right hypochondrium without intestinal complaints. Amoebiasis can be treated with special medications, but requires proper diagnosis: conventional antidiarrheals and broad-spectrum antibiotics do not work here.

Ascariasis
Ascariasis is a parasitic disease caused by the roundworm Ascaris. Infection occurs when parasite eggs are ingested with unwashed vegetables, herbs, water, or through dirty hands, especially if undisinfected feces were used to fertilize the garden. Once in the intestines, the larvae enter the bloodstream, pass through the lungs, causing a cough, rise through the respiratory tract and are swallowed again, after which they transform into adults in the intestines. Because of this journey, the disease has two phases with completely different symptoms, and complications may require the help of a surgeon.

Aspergillosis
Aspergillosis is a group of diseases caused by molds of the genus Aspergillus. Their spores are everywhere: in dust, soil, hay, grain, compost, ventilation and air conditioning systems. People inhale them every day, and for most, nothing happens. Problems begin when there is an allergic mood, damaged lung tissue or weakened immunity. This leads to three different scenarios: an allergic reaction with worsening asthma, a fungal ball in an existing lung cavity, and a severe invasive infection in patients with blood diseases and after organ transplants. The forms are treated differently, so the doctor’s main task is to understand exactly what type of aspergillosis the patient has, and not confuse it with tuberculosis.

Rabies
Rabies is a viral infection that affects the nervous system and is transmitted through the saliva of a sick animal through a bite, scratch, or contact of saliva with damaged skin and mucous membranes. The virus slowly moves along the nerves to the brain, and all this time the person feels healthy. Once symptoms appear, the disease becomes virtually incurable. But rabies has an important feature: vaccinations started immediately after contact with an animal almost always prevent the development of the disease. Therefore, any bite, scratch or salivation by an unknown dog, cat, fox or bat requires immediate medical attention - the count is in hours, not days.
