Hepatitis B and C: tests, routes of infection and treatment in Tashkent

Viral hepatitis B and C are chronic infections that affect the liver and remain asymptomatic for years. This is their main danger: a person feels healthy until cirrhosis or liver cancer develops. However, the situation with their treatment has changed radically over the past decade. Hepatitis C today can be cured in the vast majority of cases with a course of tablets lasting 8-12 weeks. Hepatitis B cannot yet be completely cured, but it can be reliably controlled, and most importantly, there is a vaccine against it.

🚨 See a doctor urgently

With these signs do not wait for a scheduled appointment — the condition requires emergency care.

How are they transmitted?

  • Through blood: non-sterile medical and dental instruments, shared needles, blood transfusions before the screening era
  • Tattoo, piercing, manicure and pedicure with non-sterile instruments
  • Sexually: for hepatitis B the risk is high, for hepatitis C it is low, but exists
  • From mother to child in labor
  • General razors, toothbrushes, manicure supplies

Who needs to get checked

  • Everyone at least once in their life - this is the recommended approach, since the disease is asymptomatic
  • Before any elective surgery and during pregnancy
  • When ALT and AST increase in tests
  • After previous medical procedures, blood transfusions, tattoos and piercings
  • If a family member or sexual partner has hepatitis
  • Medical workers
  • People who have injected drugs

What tests to take

Treatment

  • Hepatitis C: Modern direct-acting antiviral drugs are taken in tablet form for 8–12 weeks and result in cure in more than 95% of patients. Interferon, with its severe side effects, is no longer the standard
  • Cure is considered to be the absence of the virus in the blood 12 weeks after completion of the course.
  • Hepatitis B: Complete elimination of the virus is not yet possible, but antiviral drugs reliably suppress its reproduction and prevent cirrhosis. Treatment is long-term, often lifelong
  • Not everyone with hepatitis B needs treatment right away - those who are inactive carriers undergo regular monitoring
  • For severe fibrosis and cirrhosis - surveillance with ultrasound and alpha-fetoprotein every 6 months for early detection of liver cancer
  • Complete abstinence from alcohol, weight control, vaccination against hepatitis A and B (if not available)

Prevention

  • Vaccination against hepatitis B - reliably protects; is included in the vaccination schedule for newborns; adults can be vaccinated at any age
  • There is no vaccine against hepatitis C - protection is only behavioral
  • Individual razors, toothbrushes, manicure accessories
  • Tattoos, piercings and manicures only in places where instruments are sterilized
  • Barrier contraception with new partners
  • Examination of all family members if hepatitis is detected in one of them

Frequently asked questions: Viral hepatitis B and C

Is there a cure for hepatitis C?+
Yes. Modern direct-acting antiviral drugs are taken in tablet form for 8–12 weeks and cure more than 95% of patients. Heavy interferon therapy is no longer the standard.
Can hepatitis B be cured?+
It is not yet possible to completely eliminate the virus, but its reproduction is reliably suppressed by drugs, which prevents cirrhosis and liver cancer. Some patients with inactive carriage do not require treatment, only observation.
Is hepatitis transmitted through dishes?+
No. Hepatitis B and C are not transmitted through utensils, handshakes, hugs, kisses, shared food or swimming pools. The risk is through blood and, for hepatitis B, through sexual contact.
Is a positive anti-HCV hepatitis?+
Not necessarily. It means contact with the virus. A second step is needed - PCR for the RNA of the virus: if it is negative, there is no active infection, the virus has been eliminated by immunity or treatment.
Is there a vaccine?+
From hepatitis B - yes, and it reliably protects; You can get vaccinated at any age. There is no vaccine against hepatitis C; protection is only behavioral.
Is it possible to become infected again after recovery?+
Yes. Curing hepatitis C does not provide lifelong immunity, so precautions continue even after a successful course.
