Bronchial asthma
Bronchial asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract, in which the bronchi become overly sensitive and narrow in response to irritants. Hence the attacks of shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing. The main misconception that prevents you from being treated correctly is the belief that asthma can be treated with an inhaler “when it strikes.” This inhaler relieves an attack, but does not affect inflammation; the disease continues to progress. The real treatment is a daily basal inhaler, which many people skip precisely because it doesn't provide immediate relief.

Pneumonia
Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lung tissue, in which the alveoli are filled with inflammatory fluid and cease to participate in gas exchange. Unlike bronchitis, where only the respiratory tract is affected, the lung tissue itself is affected, resulting in shortness of breath and decreased oxygen saturation in the blood. Pneumonia remains one of the leading causes of death from infections, especially in the elderly. At the same time, most patients are successfully treated at home - it is important to recognize the disease in time and correctly assess the severity.

COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
COPD is a chronic disease in which the airways become persistently narrowed and lung tissue is destroyed. The main reason is smoking, including passive smoking, as well as prolonged inhalation of smoke from stoves and industrial dust. COPD differs fundamentally from asthma: the narrowing of the bronchi is not completely reversible and progresses slowly. The key fact that determines everything: quitting smoking is the only intervention proven to slow the progression of the disease. No inhalers do this, although they significantly relieve symptoms.

Bronchitis
Bronchitis is inflammation of the bronchial mucosa. Acute bronchitis in the vast majority of cases is caused by viruses and is, in fact, a continuation of the common cold, which has descended further. This is why antibiotics are not needed in most cases - and this is why they are most often prescribed unjustifiably. The main thing that the patient should know is that cough after acute bronchitis normally lasts up to 3 weeks, and sometimes longer, and this does not mean that the treatment is not working or that another antibiotic is needed.

Lung abscess
A lung abscess is a limited cavity in the lung tissue filled with pus. Most often, it develops when the contents of the mouth or stomach enter the respiratory tract, and the protective mechanisms do not work: an area of the lung becomes inflamed, the tissue melts, and an abscess forms. The typical course consists of two periods: first, high fever, chills and chest pain without obvious sputum, and then the abscess breaks into the bronchus, and suddenly a large amount of foul-smelling sputum is discharged, after which the state of health noticeably improves. Treatment is carried out in a hospital and requires long-term antibiotic therapy.

Aspergillosis
Aspergillosis is a group of diseases caused by molds of the genus Aspergillus. Their spores are everywhere: in dust, soil, hay, grain, compost, ventilation and air conditioning systems. People inhale them every day, and for most, nothing happens. Problems begin when there is an allergic mood, damaged lung tissue or weakened immunity. This leads to three different scenarios: an allergic reaction with worsening asthma, a fungal ball in an existing lung cavity, and a severe invasive infection in patients with blood diseases and after organ transplants. The forms are treated differently, so the doctor’s main task is to understand exactly what type of aspergillosis the patient has, and not confuse it with tuberculosis.

Aspiration pneumonia
Aspiration pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs that develops after food, saliva or stomach contents enter the respiratory tract. Normally, the cough reflex and epiglottis protect from this, but with impaired consciousness, stroke, dementia, alcohol abuse and diseases of the pharynx, the protection weakens. Along with food particles, oral microbes enter the lungs, and inflammation develops in the lower sections, prone to suppuration. The course is often severe, and the sputum often acquires an unpleasant odor. Prevention plays a special role: correct feeding position and oral care.

Atelectasis of the lung
Atelectasis is a collapse of a section of the lung, in which the alveoli lose air and cease to participate in gas exchange. Most often, the cause is mechanical: the bronchus is blocked by thick mucus, a foreign body or tumor, the air behind the obstacle is gradually absorbed into the blood, and the lobe of the lung is compressed. Less commonly, the lung is compressed from the outside by fluid or air in the pleural cavity or does not expand due to a lack of surfactant and shallow breathing after surgery. Atelectasis is not an independent disease, but a sign of another problem, so the doctor’s main task is to find and eliminate the cause, and not just see a shadow in the picture.

Chest pain
Chest pain is one of the most alarming complaints, and this is justified: it can be caused by either a harmless muscle spasm or a myocardial infarction. The chest contains the heart and large vessels, lungs and pleura, esophagus, ribs, muscles and nerves, so the source of pain is determined by its nature, duration and connection with exercise, breathing, movement and food intake. Pressing pain behind the sternum when walking, radiating to the arm or jaw, requires immediate help. Stitching pain, which intensifies when turning the torso or applying pressure, is most often associated with the muscles and ribs. The main rule is simple: if the pain occurs for the first time, is very severe or is accompanied by shortness of breath, call 103 rather than wait.

Bronchial asthma in children is a chronic inflammation of the airways, in which the bronchi become too sensitive and narrow in response to irritants. Wheezing, difficulty exhaling, paroxysmal coughing and a feeling of lack of air appear. Symptoms come and go, often worsening at night, in the morning, with physical activity, in cold air and during colds. In children, asthma is very closely related to allergies and is often combined with atopic dermatitis and allergic rhinitis. Asthma cannot be treated once, but is well controlled: with properly selected therapy, the child lives, studies and plays sports on an equal basis with his peers.
