Arthrosis of the knee joint (gonarthrosis)
Osteoarthritis of the knee joint is the gradual destruction of articular cartilage, due to which the bones begin to rub against each other. This is the most common cause of knee pain in people over 45 years of age. Modern medicine cannot restore already lost cartilage, and this should be understood immediately - so as not to spend years on products that promise to “grow cartilage.” But it is quite possible to slow down the destruction, remove pain and maintain mobility, and in severe cases, endoprosthetics returns a person to normal life.

Coxarthrosis (arthrosis of the hip joint)
Coxarthrosis is arthrosis of the hip joint. Its peculiarity is that the pain is often felt not where the joint is located: typically it radiates to the groin, along the front surface of the thigh and often to the knee. Because of this, patients are treated for months for sciatica, or “salt buildup in the knee,” until they get an X-ray of the pelvis. Coxarthrosis progresses faster than arthrosis of the knee, and limits life more severely: a person stops putting on socks, cutting his toenails, and getting into the car. At the same time, endoprosthetics gives one of the best results in all orthopedics.

Osteochondrosis of the spine
Osteochondrosis is age-related degenerative changes in the intervertebral discs and joints of the spine. It is important to understand: to one degree or another, almost all people after 30–35 years have them, and in themselves they are not a disease. The problem is that this diagnosis in post-Soviet medicine is used to explain almost any pain - in the back, neck, head, arm, heart. Meanwhile, in most cases, back pain is not associated with “salt deposits”, but with muscles and joints, and responds well to movement, rather than rest and IVs.

Gout
Gout is a disease in which the level of uric acid in the blood rises, and its crystals are deposited in the joints, causing attacks of severe inflammation. The classic debut is recognizable almost unmistakably: at night, unbearable pain suddenly arises in the joint of the big toe, it turns red, swells, and it is impossible to touch even with a blanket. Gout is often considered a “disease of nutrition” that can be controlled by diet alone. This is a misconception: diet reduces uric acid levels only slightly, and true gout requires medications taken continuously.

Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformation of the spine with lateral curvature and rotation of the vertebrae. Most often it is idiopathic, that is, it develops without an established cause, and appears during a period of rapid growth, much more often in girls. The main feature of scoliosis is that it progresses during the child’s growth and stops after its completion. Therefore, timing is everything: scoliosis detected in time can be supported with a corset, but if missed, it will require surgery. Posture and “correct sitting” have almost no effect on true scoliosis, and it’s worth knowing this so as not to waste months.

Calcaneal apophysitis (Schinz disease)
Schinz's disease, or calcaneal apophysitis, is the most common cause of heel pain in children 8–14 years of age. At this age, the calcaneus is still growing: its posterior part, the apophysis, is connected to the main bone by a cartilaginous growth zone. The Achilles tendon pulls the apophysis upward, and when running and jumping, the growth zone receives repeated shocks. In response, irritation and microinflammation develop, which cause pain. This is not a fracture, infection or tumor: the condition is benign and goes away completely when the growth plate closes. But while it is open, the child may noticeably limp and refuse to train, so the load needs to be properly adjusted.

Arthritis
Arthritis is an inflammation of the joint, which primarily affects the synovial membrane lining it from the inside. Unlike arthrosis, where wear and tear of the cartilage is in the foreground, with arthritis there are signs of active inflammation: swelling, redness, local fever and characteristic morning stiffness, which goes away after warming up. Arthritis is not one diagnosis, but a collective name: it covers rheumatoid arthritis, gout, reactive and psoriatic arthritis, joint infections and many other conditions. Correctly determining the form is fundamentally important, because treatment for them differs radically, and delay in some types leads to joint destruction.

Arthrosis of the ankle joint
Ankle arthritis is the thinning and destruction of the cartilage between the tibia and the talus bone of the foot. Unlike arthrosis of the knees and hip joints, here age-related changes play a small role: the vast majority of cases are associated with trauma - a broken ankle, repeated sprains, rupture of the ligament apparatus. Several years pass, and pain appears when walking, swelling in the evening, crunching and morning stiffness. The joint is small, but bears the weight of the entire body, so even moderate changes significantly interfere. With the correct selection of shoes, insoles and exercises, progression can be noticeably slowed down.

Arthrosis of the shoulder joint
Arthrosis of the shoulder joint is the gradual destruction of the cartilage covering the head of the humerus and the glenoid cavity of the scapula. The cartilage becomes thinner, the bones begin to rub against each other, bone spines grow along the edges, and the joint capsule thickens. A deep aching pain appears, a crunching sound when moving, and increasing limitations: at first it is difficult to put your hand behind your back and reach the top shelf, then it hurts to comb your hair and get dressed. Unlike the knee and hip, the shoulder joint does not bear the weight of the body, so arthrosis is less common here and is more often associated with past injuries, dislocations and damage to the rotator cuff.

Arthrosis of the hand joints (rhizarthrosis, Heberden's nodes)
Arthrosis of the hand joints is wear and tear of the cartilage in the small joints of the fingers and at the base of the thumb. Two places most often affected are the joint between the metacarpal bone and the carpal bone at the base of the thumb, which is called rhizarthrosis, and the end joints of the fingers, where dense bony Heberden's nodes form. The disease develops slowly over years: first, the hands hurt after work, then stiffness appears in the morning, the joints thicken, and the fingers become bent. Rhizarthrosis especially interferes with everyday life - it is difficult to open a jar, turn a key, or hold a cup. It is impossible to completely restore the cartilage, but pain and hand function can be significantly improved.
