Bronchial asthma
Bronchial asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract, in which the bronchi become overly sensitive and narrow in response to irritants. Hence the attacks of shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing. The main misconception that prevents you from being treated correctly is the belief that asthma can be treated with an inhaler “when it strikes.” This inhaler relieves an attack, but does not affect inflammation; the disease continues to progress. The real treatment is a daily basal inhaler, which many people skip precisely because it doesn't provide immediate relief.

Atopic dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease, which is based on a violation of the skin barrier. The skin loses moisture, becomes dry and easily allows irritants and allergens to pass through - hence inflammation and painful itching. The disease most often begins in the first year of life, and for most children it becomes much easier with age. The key to control is not the search for “that same product,” but the daily restoration of the barrier with emollients, which parents are often not told about.

Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the thin transparent membrane that covers the white of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. This is the most common cause of red eye, and in most cases the condition is benign and goes away on its own. The problem is different: under the mask of conjunctivitis, diseases that threaten vision can be hidden - keratitis, iridocyclitis, an acute attack of glaucoma. A few simple signs help to distinguish them, and knowing them is useful for everyone.

Urticaria
Hives are a condition in which itchy blisters suddenly appear on the skin, similar to a nettle sting. The key feature that distinguishes it from other rashes: each individual blister lasts less than a day and disappears without a trace, although new ones continue to appear. Contrary to popular belief, allergies are not always the cause: with chronic urticaria, which lasts for months, a specific allergen is rarely found, and searching for it with tests is usually useless.

Hay fever (seasonal allergies)
Hay fever is an allergy to plant pollen, and its main feature is that it comes on schedule. The same person begins to sneeze in the same weeks year after year, and between seasons feels completely healthy. The immune system mistakes harmless pollen proteins for a threat and deploys a full-fledged defense against them - hence the itching, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Two things are worth knowing right away. First: hay fever by itself does not go away with age and without treatment it often expands - pollen from one plant is added to the pollen of another, and bronchi are added to the nose. Second: the only method that acts on the cause and not on the symptoms is allergen-specific immunotherapy, and it must be started in advance, out of season. Everything else, including the popular advice to “treat yourself with honey,” masks the symptoms at best, and at worst adds new problems.

Allergic rhinitis
Allergic rhinitis is an inflammation of the nasal mucosa, caused not by microbes, but by a reaction to harmless substances: house dust, animal hair and saliva, mold, pollen. He is most often underestimated twice. First, they treat it for months as if it were a long-term cold, pouring vasoconstrictor drops into the nose until a dependence on them is formed. Then, having figured out the cause, they consider the disease a trifle - “just think, a runny nose.” Meanwhile, the nose and bronchi are parts of the same respiratory system, and untreated rhinitis naturally increases the risk of bronchial asthma, and in those who already have asthma, worsens its control. A separate topic is the fear of nasal hormonal sprays. They are the most effective remedy for severe congestion, and it is they who are most often abandoned, choosing instead drops that aggravate the problem.

Food allergies
A food allergy is an erroneous immune reaction to a food protein, in which even a small amount of it causes a predictable response from the body: rash, swelling, vomiting, and in severe cases, anaphylaxis. The word “allergy” is used much more widely in everyday life, and this is where most problems arise. Bloating from milk is not an allergy, but lactose intolerance, and its mechanism is completely different: there is not enough enzyme. A headache from red wine, redness of the face from spicy food, discomfort after fatty foods are also not allergies. The difference is fundamental, because everything depends on it: in case of a true allergy, the product is excluded completely; in case of intolerance, it is usually enough to reduce the portion. And one more point on which people spend serious money: tests “for hidden food intolerance” using IgG antibodies to dozens of products do not confirm an allergy and have no proven diagnostic value. Diets based on their results do more harm than good.

Drug allergy
A drug allergy is an immune reaction to a drug, and its key feature is that it is noticeably less common than recorded in medical records. As a child, a person developed a rash due to an antibiotic, an entry appeared in the chart, and he lives with it for the next forty years, each time refusing a whole group of drugs. Meanwhile, upon examination, the vast majority of people with the mark “allergy to penicillin” tolerate it normally: the rash was then caused by a virus, not a medicine, or the reaction has lost its strength over the years. The cost of an erroneous label is quite real: instead of a simple and effective antibiotic, reserve drugs are prescribed - a wider spectrum, which more often causes complications and contributes to the development of bacterial resistance. Therefore, the correct approach is not to avoid the drug all your life just in case, but to figure out whether it was an allergy at all and whether it persists now.

Quincke's edema and anaphylaxis
Quincke's edema is a rapidly developing swelling of the deep layers of the skin and mucous membranes: lips, eyelids, tongue, hands, feet, and in the most dangerous case, the larynx. Anaphylaxis is a severe systemic reaction in which multiple body systems are simultaneously affected, including breathing and circulation. These are the few allergic conditions that are truly life-threatening, and timing is everything. The main thing to remember and what is most often done incorrectly: for anaphylaxis and increasing swelling of the throat, the first-line drug is adrenaline administered intramuscularly, and not a tablet or injection of an antihistamine. Antihistamines relieve itching and hives, but do not affect swelling of the airways and do not increase blood pressure; their effect develops too slowly. The second thing you need to know: even after it gets better, the reaction can return after a few hours, so medical supervision is mandatory.

Allergic dermatitis and toxicoderma
Allergic dermatitis in everyday life refers to various inflammatory reactions of the skin to an allergen. Doctors distinguish among them contact dermatitis, which occurs when the skin comes into contact with a substance, and toxicerma - a rash caused by a substance that has entered the body: with pills, injections, or less often with food. Most often, toxicerma is provoked by antibiotics, anticonvulsants and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It usually appears as an itchy red rash a few days after starting use and goes away once the culprit is discontinued. However, there are severe forms with damage to the mucous membranes, detachment of the skin and internal organs, which require immediate hospitalization. Therefore, any rash during treatment should be shown to a doctor.
