Depression
Depression is a disease, not a weakness of character or “a bad mood that must be endured.” It is characterized by a persistent decline in mood, loss of the ability to experience pleasure and loss of energy, lasting at least two weeks and interfering with work, study and communication. Depression is highly treatable: a combination of psychotherapy and, if necessary, medication returns a person to normal life in most cases. The main obstacle is stigma: people do not seek help for years, believing that they must cope on their own.

Stroke
A stroke is an acute circulatory disorder in the brain, in which a section of brain tissue stops receiving oxygen and dies. This is a condition where literally minutes count: every minute without blood flow, about two million nerve cells die. That is why the main thing that everyone should know is not the names of drugs, but how to recognize a stroke in a minute and immediately call an ambulance. Trying to “lie down,” take a blood pressure pill, or wait until the morning is the most common and most expensive mistake.

Migraine
Migraine is not “just a severe headache,” but an independent neurological disease with its own development mechanism. The attack usually affects one half of the head, lasts from several hours to three days and often leaves the person completely incapacitated. At the same time, migraine remains one of the most underdiagnosed conditions: most people take painkillers for years without consulting a doctor, and do not know that attacks can not only be relieved, but also prevented.

Osteochondrosis of the spine
Osteochondrosis is age-related degenerative changes in the intervertebral discs and joints of the spine. It is important to understand: to one degree or another, almost all people after 30–35 years have them, and in themselves they are not a disease. The problem is that this diagnosis in post-Soviet medicine is used to explain almost any pain - in the back, neck, head, arm, heart. Meanwhile, in most cases, back pain is not associated with “salt deposits”, but with muscles and joints, and responds well to movement, rather than rest and IVs.

Intervertebral disc herniation
A herniated disc is the release of the internal contents of the disc beyond its outer ring. The diagnosis sounds alarming, and most patients immediately think about surgery. In reality, the picture is different: a significant proportion of hernias exist asymptomatically, and of those that cause pain, the majority resolve conservatively within 6-12 weeks. Moreover, large hernias and sequesters often decrease or completely resolve on their own - the body “digests” them. Surgery is necessary for a minority, but there are a few situations where delay is unacceptable.

Atrial fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation is the most common stable heart rhythm disorder, in which the atria stop contracting correctly and “flutter”, and the pulse becomes chaotic. The main danger of this arrhythmia is not the interruptions themselves: blood stagnates in the motionless atria and blood clots form, which travel with the blood flow to the brain. Atrial fibrillation increases the risk of stroke by about five times, and that is why the main thing in its treatment is not to “even out the pulse,” but to prevent a stroke.

Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a chronic brain disease in which a group of nerve cells periodically produce an excessive electrical discharge, resulting in a seizure. There are still many myths around the disease: it is considered incurable, a mental disorder, or necessarily accompanied by convulsions and falling. In reality, attacks can vary greatly - up to several seconds of "absence" that others do not notice - and the right treatment allows most patients to live without attacks.

Neurogenic bladder
Neurogenic bladder is a disorder of urine storage and emptying caused not by the bladder itself, but by damage to the nervous system that controls it. This condition accompanies spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, stroke, diabetic neuropathy and other neurological diseases. The main danger here is not the inconvenience, but the fact that in some forms the kidneys are gradually and imperceptibly damaged.

Amnesia (memory loss)
Amnesia is a loss of memories that goes beyond ordinary forgetfulness. A person may not remember events before the incident, not remember new things after it, or lose an entire segment of his life. Memory is formed with the participation of the temporal lobes and the hippocampus, so amnesia occurs with a head injury, stroke, epileptic seizure, alcohol poisoning, severe stress, brain infection or vitamin deficiency. Amnesia is not an independent disease, but a symptom, and the main thing here is to find the cause. Some causes are reversible and treatable, but some, such as stroke or meningoencephalitis, require immediate help.

Cerebral aneurysm
A cerebral aneurysm is a protrusion of the wall of an artery in the form of a sac, most often in places where blood vessels branch at the base of the brain. The wall in this place is thinned, and with increased pressure it can rupture, causing hemorrhage under the membranes of the brain. While the aneurysm is intact, it usually does not cause any symptoms and is found incidentally on an MRI or CT scan performed for another reason. Large aneurysms sometimes compress neighboring nerves and are manifested by double vision, drooping eyelids, and pain in the eye area. Not every aneurysm requires surgery: the decision is made based on its size, shape, location, patient age, and other risk factors.
