Depression
Depression is a disease, not a weakness of character or “a bad mood that must be endured.” It is characterized by a persistent decline in mood, loss of the ability to experience pleasure and loss of energy, lasting at least two weeks and interfering with work, study and communication. Depression is highly treatable: a combination of psychotherapy and, if necessary, medication returns a person to normal life in most cases. The main obstacle is stigma: people do not seek help for years, believing that they must cope on their own.

Anxiety disorder
Anxiety disorder is a condition in which worry becomes excessive, persistent, and inappropriate to the actual threat. It ceases to be a useful defensive reaction and begins to control life: a person avoids situations, places and actions, the range of possibilities narrows. The peculiarity of anxiety disorders is that they manifest themselves primarily physically—palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness—and patients go to cardiologists and neurologists for years, receiving the conclusion “everything is fine.” Meanwhile, this is one of the most well-studied and most treatable conditions in psychiatry.

Hyperventilation syndrome (lack of air)
Hyperventilation syndrome is a condition in which a person breathes faster and deeper than the body needs, and this causes a painful feeling of lack of air. The paradox is that there is enough oxygen in the blood: excessive breathing washes away carbon dioxide, brain vessels narrow, and blood acidity changes. This results in dizziness, numbness in the fingers and around the mouth, trembling, palpitations, a lump in the throat and fear. Most often, the syndrome is associated with anxiety, panic attacks and chronic stress; less often it becomes a breathing habit after an illness. The diagnosis is made when the examination does not reveal diseases of the lungs, heart, anemia and thyroid disorders.

Depersonalization and derealization
Depersonalization is a feeling of alienation from oneself: one’s own thoughts, emotions, voice and body are perceived as alien or automatic, as if a person is watching himself from the outside. Derealization is a similar feeling, but turned outward: the world seems flat, artificial, distant, as if behind glass or in fog. These states are almost always accompanied by the fear of going crazy, although they have nothing to do with psychosis: criticism is completely preserved, and the person understands that this is just a feeling. Many people experience short episodes when they are very tired or anxious. If the condition persists for weeks and interferes with life, you need the help of a specialist.

Dysmorphophobia (dysmorphic disorder)
Bodysmorphophobia is a disorder in which a person is painfully focused on a flaw in his appearance that is invisible or almost invisible to others. Most often it is the skin, nose, hair, face shape or figure. Thoughts take up several hours a day, cause severe anxiety and trigger repetitive behavior: looking at oneself in the mirror or, conversely, avoiding mirrors, disguising oneself with cosmetics and clothes, constant comparisons, seeking confirmation from loved ones. A person may refuse to study, work and socialize, or save money for cosmetic procedures that do not bring relief. This is not vanity or whim, but a condition with a high level of suffering that requires the help of a specialist.

Gambling addiction (gambling addiction)
Gambling addiction, or gambling addiction, is a disorder in which gambling becomes uncontrollable and continues despite debts, conflicts and job loss. A person constantly thinks about the game, increases bets to get the same excitement, tries to win back after a loss, and hides the extent of losses from loved ones. The mechanism here is the same as in chemical addictions: excitement stimulates the brain's reward system, and the unpredictability of winning makes this stimulation especially strong. Online betting and phone games have dramatically accelerated the problem. The condition is treated with psychotherapy, and the earlier help is started, the less damage there is.

Hypochondria
Hypochondria is a persistent, disproportionate anxiety about one’s own health: a person is convinced that he has a serious illness, although examinations do not confirm this. Ordinary bodily sensations—palpitations after coffee, rumbling in the stomach, a mole, tingling—are perceived as signs of a dangerous illness. The peace of mind from good tests does not last long, and soon the search begins again. Often there are endless visits to doctors, self-examinations and hours of reading about symptoms on the Internet. This is not pretense or “suspiciousness”: suffering is real, and the quality of life is declining. The condition responds well to psychotherapy if you stop looking for confirmation and start treating anxiety.

Cardioneurosis (cardiac neurosis)
Cardioneurosis is a condition in which a person experiences pain in the heart area, irregularities and palpitations, but examination does not find heart disease. This is not fiction or pretense: the complaints are real, but are caused by a dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system against a background of anxiety and stress. Usually it all starts with fear for one’s heart, then the person listens to every beat, anxiety intensifies the symptoms, and the circle closes. The diagnosis is made only after the cardiologist has ruled out coronary artery disease and arrhythmias. Treatment focuses on anxiety and lifestyle, not the heart.

Compulsive overeating
Compulsive overeating is an eating disorder in which bouts are repeated: a person eats a lot in a limited time, eats quickly, to the point of unpleasant heaviness, often secretly and without feeling hungry. The main difference from ordinary overeating at the table is the loss of control and a heavy feeling of guilt and self-loathing after the episode. Unlike bulimia, there is no purging: the person does not vomit or take laxatives, so weight often increases over time. Attacks are usually associated not with appetite, but with emotions - anxiety, boredom, fatigue, loneliness. This can be treated, and you don’t need to start with another diet.

Neuroses (neurotic disorders)
Neurosis is the traditional name for a group of disorders that arise in response to prolonged stress or internal conflict and are manifested by anxiety, irritability, fatigue, sleep disturbances and a variety of bodily complaints. Their main feature is that criticism of one’s condition is preserved: the person understands that something is wrong with him and wants to return to his previous life. In modern classifications, instead of the general word neurosis, more precise diagnoses are used: anxiety disorder, panic disorder, somatoform disorder, adaptation disorder. This is important because treatment depends on the specific diagnosis, and in most cases it is successful for neurotic disorders.
