Gastritis and duodenitis
Gastritis is an inflammation of the gastric mucosa, one of the most common and at the same time the most vague diagnoses. It is important to understand: gastritis is a morphological diagnosis that is made based on the results of gastroscopy with biopsy, and not based on complaints of stomach pain. A significant proportion of people with pain in the upper abdomen do not have gastritis, but functional dyspepsia, where the mucous membrane is not changed. And vice versa: chronic gastritis often occurs without symptoms at all, and is discovered by chance. The key practical question for gastritis is whether there is Helicobacter pylori.

GERD (gastroesophageal reflux)
Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a condition in which stomach contents regularly back up into the esophagus. The esophageal mucosa is not adapted to acid, which is why heartburn, sour belching and chest pain occur. GERD is extremely common and is often perceived as a harmless inconvenience that can be “cured with baking soda.” Meanwhile, prolonged acid discharge can lead to changes in the esophageal mucosa - Barrett's esophagus, which is considered a precancerous condition. Therefore, heartburn more than twice a week is not a reason for soda, but for a visit to the doctor.

Colon polyps
Colon polyp is a growth of mucous membrane into the intestinal lumen. By itself, it almost never hurts or interferes, and this is the main difficulty: polyps are found not because a person complains about something, but because he had a colonoscopy. Moreover, the vast majority of cases of colon cancer develop from adenomatous polyps, and this path takes years. Hence the simple logic: a polyp removed in time means cancer prevented. Colonoscopy remains the only test that both finds and immediately eliminates the problem.

Peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum
Peptic ulcer is the formation of a deep defect in the wall of the stomach or duodenum. A few decades ago, it was considered a stress disease and was treated for years with diets. Today it is known that in the vast majority of cases there are only two reasons: Helicobacter pylori infection and the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. This changed everything: ulcers are no longer a lifelong chronic problem and, in most cases, can be cured with a course of therapy lasting two weeks.

Fatty liver disease
Fatty liver disease is the accumulation of fat in liver cells, which today occurs in every third or fourth adult and is most often discovered by chance during an ultrasound for another reason. The wording in the conclusion like “diffuse changes like steatosis” is scary, but in itself does not mean a serious illness. What matters is whether the process has turned into inflammation (steatohepatitis), because it is this that leads to fibrosis and, in the long term, to cirrhosis. And one more thing that is worth knowing right away: there is no specific medicine “for fat in the liver”, but what seems banal works - weight loss and metabolic control.

Hiatal hernia
A hiatal hernia is a displacement of part of the stomach from the abdominal cavity into the thoracic cavity through an enlarged hole in the diaphragm. In itself, this condition often goes unnoticed and is detected during gastroscopy for heartburn. The clinical significance of hiatal hernia is that it disrupts the functioning of the natural valve between the esophagus and the stomach, and the contents of the stomach begin to be thrown back. Hence a characteristic detail that patients themselves notice: heartburn intensifies in a lying position, when bending over and after a heavy meal - that is, when gravity ceases to help keep the contents in the stomach.

Gallstone disease
Gallstone disease is the formation of stones in the gall bladder. It occurs very often, and in a significant proportion of people stones exist for years asymptomatically, being detected by chance on an ultrasound. The key point that determines the tactics is precisely this: asymptomatic stones in most cases do not require surgery, but the appearance of biliary colic changes the situation - after the first attack, the likelihood of recurrence and complications becomes high, and planned removal of the bladder turns out to be safer than waiting.

Cholecystitis
Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder wall. In the vast majority of cases, it develops against the background of stones: the stone blocks the exit from the bladder, the bile stagnates, and an infection occurs. Acute cholecystitis is a condition requiring hospitalization: without treatment, it can lead to gangrene of the bladder and peritonitis. Chronic cholecystitis is often put too broadly, explaining to them any severity in the right hypochondrium, although in many cases we are talking about functional disorders or other pathology.

Alcoholic liver disease
Alcoholic liver disease is liver damage caused by regular alcohol consumption. It develops gradually and goes through several stages: first, fat accumulates in the liver cells (steatosis), then inflammation can occur - alcoholic hepatitis, and with continued use, scar tissue (fibrosis) and cirrhosis are formed. For a long time, the disease occurs without symptoms, and a person learns about it through tests or ultrasound. In the early stages, the damage is reversible: after quitting alcohol, the liver is able to recover. At the stage of cirrhosis, the changes are irreversible, but stopping alcohol consumption still significantly improves the prognosis and prolongs life.

Anal itching
Anal itching is an unpleasant, sometimes painful sensation of itching and burning in the anus. It can be mild and episodic or constant, worsening at night and disrupting sleep. Many people are embarrassed to consult a doctor about this problem and use random ointments for years. Meanwhile, anal itching has many causes: excessive or insufficient hygiene, humidity, hemorrhoids and anal fissures, rectal discharge, pinworms, fungal infections, allergic dermatitis to hygiene products, psoriasis, diabetes mellitus. A proctologist, through examination and simple tests, usually quickly finds the cause, after which the itching is successfully treated.
