Caries
Caries is the destruction of hard tooth tissues under the influence of acids produced by plaque bacteria while processing carbohydrates. This is the most common human disease. The key thing to understand is that it is not sugar itself that destroys the tooth, but the frequency of its intake. Five candies eaten at one time are less harmful than the same five candies spread out over a day, because each episode triggers an acid attack for about 20-40 minutes. This is why snacks and sugary drinks between meals are more dangerous than dessert after dinner.

Pulpitis and periodontitis
Pulpitis is inflammation of the neurovascular bundle inside the tooth, and periodontitis is inflammation of the tissues surrounding the root. These are successive stages of one process: advanced caries reaches the pulp, causing pulpitis, and untreated pulpitis turns into periodontitis with a focus of inflammation at the apex of the root. It is pulpitis that causes that unbearable night toothache that keeps people awake. The good news is that modern endodontics allows you to save a tooth, even with a dead nerve, for decades.

Gingivitis and periodontitis
Bleeding gums when brushing is not normal and not a “too hard brush.” This is the first sign of gingivitis, inflammation of the gums due to the accumulation of plaque. Gingivitis is completely reversible: it goes away within 1–2 weeks after professional cleaning and improved hygiene. But if you ignore it, the inflammation goes deeper and develops into periodontitis - the destruction of the ligament that holds the tooth and the bone tissue around it. This is already irreversible: lost bone cannot be returned, and periodontitis remains the main cause of tooth loss in adults, ahead of caries.

Impacted wisdom tooth
The wisdom tooth is the eighth, outermost chewing tooth, which erupts later than all others, usually between seventeen and twenty-five years. It is called impacted when it remains entirely in the bone, semi-impacted when only part of the crown appears above the gum, and dystopic when it has grown at an angle or lies horizontally. The most persistent misconception around these teeth sounds like this: “everyone should have their teeth removed, and the sooner the better.” This is not true. It is not the wisdom tooth as such that is removed, but a specific problem - inflammation, caries of an adjacent tooth, a cyst, lack of space. An evenly standing, fully erupted and brushable wisdom tooth has the same right to remain as any other, and the decision to remove it is made based on the image and examination, and not on the number of the tooth in the row.

Stomatitis
Stomatitis is an inflammation of the oral mucosa, most often manifested by painful ulcers. One word hides very different conditions: aphthous stomatitis with recurrent ulcers, candidal stomatitis with a white coating, herpetic with blisters, traumatic from the sharp edge of a filling. They are treated differently, and that is why there are no universal “remedies for stomatitis”. A separate rule that is worth remembering: a mouth ulcer that does not heal for more than two weeks requires examination by a doctor - this is how cancer can begin.

Missing teeth and implantation
A lost tooth doesn't leave behind an empty space—it leaves behind a process. The bone that held the root loses its load and begins to decline, and most quickly in the first year; the adjacent teeth gradually tilt into the space, and the tooth on the opposite jaw moves forward to meet the void. An implant is a titanium root that is implanted into the bone to replace the lost one, and around it the bone tissue restores its structure. Two misconceptions prevent people from deciding: that it is very painful and that it drags on for years. In fact, installing one implant feels comparable to removing a tooth and takes less than an hour, and you have to wait not for the operation, but for engraftment - and all this time the gap is covered by a temporary structure.

Peri-implantitis
Peri-implantitis is an inflammation of the tissues around the installed implant, in which the bone that supports it is gradually destroyed. The misconception due to which the problem is discovered late sounds deceptively logical: “the implant is not alive, it cannot hurt, so nothing will happen to it.” Titanium really does not hurt and is not destroyed by caries - but the gums and bone around it are alive, and they are the ones that become inflamed. The insidiousness of peri-implantitis is that it is almost always painless: a person does not feel anything until the implant begins to wobble, and by this time a significant part of the bone has been lost. The first and only early warning sign is usually bleeding gums when brushing in the area of the implant - something that is most easily written off as a trifle.

Hyperesthesia (tooth sensitivity)
Hyperesthesia is a short sharp pain in the tooth in response to cold, hot, sour, sweet or to the touch of a brush, which goes away almost immediately after the irritant is removed. The reason for it is always the same: dentin is exposed - a layer under the enamel, penetrated by thousands of microscopic tubules leading to the nerve. The most harmful misconception here is “it hurts and it stops.” Sensitivity may indeed subside for weeks, but not because the tooth has recovered: the tubules are partially clogged with minerals from the saliva, and the cause of dentin exposure does not go away. If it is not found and eliminated, the pain returns, and the area of exposed dentin continues to expand. In addition, under the guise of “just sensitivity”, caries, a cracked tooth or incipient pulpitis are often hidden, and they can be distinguished by one sign - how long the pain lasts after the irritant is removed.

Gum abscess
A gum abscess is a limited accumulation of pus in the tissues surrounding the tooth. Externally, it is a painful swelling or “bump” on the gum, often with redness, swelling of the cheek and pain when biting. Pus forms when infection from a deep periodontal pocket or from the canal of a decayed tooth does not find an outflow. The condition requires the help of a dentist, and not waiting: the abscess does not resolve on its own, and the breakthrough of pus brings only temporary relief. The danger is that the infection can spread to the tissue of the face and neck, causing phlegmon and a general serious condition. If there is swelling that makes it difficult to swallow or breathe, help is needed immediately.

Alveolitis of the hole after tooth extraction
Alveolitis is inflammation of the socket after tooth extraction. Normally, the extraction site fills with a blood clot, which covers the bone and nerve endings and serves as a basis for healing. If the clot does not form, breaks down, or is washed out, the exposed bone comes into contact with saliva, food, and germs—a dry socket occurs. A typical scenario: immediately after removal, the pain gradually subsides, but on the second to fourth day it sharply intensifies, radiates to the ear and temple, and an unpleasant smell and taste appears. This does not go away on its own and requires treatment of the hole by a dentist, after which the pain usually quickly subsides.
