Stomatitis: mouth ulcers, causes and treatment in Tashkent

Other names:

Stomatitis is an inflammation of the oral mucosa, most often manifested by painful ulcers. One word hides very different conditions: aphthous stomatitis with recurrent ulcers, candidal stomatitis with a white coating, herpetic with blisters, traumatic from the sharp edge of a filling. They are treated differently, and that is why there are no universal “remedies for stomatitis”. A separate rule that is worth remembering: a mouth ulcer that does not heal for more than two weeks requires examination by a doctor - this is how cancer can begin.

With these signs do not wait for a scheduled appointment — the condition requires emergency care.

Main types

  • Aphthous: round ulcers with a whitish bottom and a red rim, very painful; most often on the inner surface of the cheeks and lips, tongue. Relapse
  • Candidiasis: white cheesy coating, removed to expose reddened mucosa; typical in infants, when taking antibiotics and inhaled hormones, in diabetes
  • Herpetic: multiple small blisters turning into erosions; often with fever, especially during the first episode in children
  • Traumatic: single ulcer at the site of injury - sharp edge of a tooth or filling, cheek bite, denture
  • Allergic and contact: reaction to paste, rinse aid, prosthetic materials

What to look for in case of frequent relapses

Treatment

  • Aphthous: local anesthetic gels, agents with an anti-inflammatory component, elimination of the traumatic factor; for severe recurrent forms - treatment as prescribed by a doctor
  • Candidiasis: antifungal drugs topically or orally; when using inhaled hormones, be sure to rinse your mouth after inhalation
  • Herpetic: antiviral drugs, effective in the first 48–72 hours, pain relief, drinking plenty of fluids
  • Traumatic: eliminating the cause - grinding off the sharp edge, adjusting the prosthesis; heals in a few days
  • General: soft, non-hot food, excluding spicy, sour, salty foods; rinsing with saline or soda solution

Stomatitis in children

  • Herpetic stomatitis often occurs with high fever; The main task is to prevent dehydration
  • Offer cool drinks often and in small portions; non-hot compotes and water are suitable
  • The food is soft, cool, without sour or salty foods; ice cream is acceptable and relieves pain
  • Pain relief before meals as prescribed by a doctor
  • Do not share dishes and towels - herpetic stomatitis is contagious
  • See a doctor immediately if your child refuses to drink, urinates rarely, or is lethargic—signs of dehydration

Frequently asked questions: Stomatitis

Why does stomatitis come back again and again?+
Most often due to permanent trauma - a sharp tooth edge, filling or denture - as well as iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiencies. Frequent relapses require examination and testing.
Is it possible to cauterize ulcers with brilliant green?+
No. Zelenka, iodine, alcohol and peroxide cause a chemical burn to the mucous membrane, deepen the defect and slow down healing. You need special gels prescribed by your doctor.
Is stomatitis contagious?+
Depends on the species. Herpes is contagious and is transmitted through dishes, kisses and toys. Aphthous and traumatic are not contagious at all.
When is a mouth ulcer dangerous?+
If it does not heal for more than two weeks, it is painless, dense, or there is a white or red spot that cannot be removed when scraped. This is an indication for examination and, if necessary, biopsy.
Why did a white coating appear after using the inhaler?+
This is thrush, a known side effect of inhaled hormones. It is prevented by rinsing the mouth with water immediately after each inhalation.
