Pericoronitis
Pericoronitis is an inflammation of the soft tissues overhanging a tooth that has not fully erupted. Almost always we are talking about the lower wisdom tooth: the crown has already appeared, but part of it remains covered by a flap of mucous membrane, which is called the hood. Under this flap a pocket several millimeters deep is formed, where food easily gets clogged and cannot be reached with a brush. The misconception around this topic works in two directions at once. Some attribute any pain in the depths of the jaw to the wisdom tooth - including that caused by caries of an adjacent tooth, joint or throat - and demand that it be removed. Others are sure that since it is the eight that hurts, it means it is “wrong” and needs to be pulled out immediately, right in the midst of inflammation. In fact, it is not the tooth itself that is to blame, but a pocket under the mucous membrane, and the decision about the fate of the tooth is made based on the image, and not on the severity of the pain.

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction
The temporomandibular joint connects the lower jaw to the skull and remains the only paired joint of the body that cannot work as halves separately: both sides move simultaneously, and a problem with one inevitably affects the other. Inside the joint lies a cartilage disc - a pad that slides along with the head of the jaw every time the mouth opens. It is this sound that is most often associated with the sound that brings people to the doctor. Two opposing and equally incorrect opinions have developed around this sound: “it clicks, it means there’s nothing wrong with it, everyone clicks” and “it clicks, it means the joint is destroyed.” The truth is in the middle and quite specific: an isolated painless click without restriction of mouth opening is actually observed without treatment. But a click along with pain - or a click that suddenly disappeared simultaneously with the ability to open your mouth wide - is no longer the norm, but a reason to see a specialist, and in the second case in the coming days.

Tartar and plaque
Tartar is hardened plaque that is saturated with minerals from saliva and firmly adhered to the surface of the tooth. There is a fundamental boundary between soft plaque and stone: a person removes plaque with a brush himself, but stone cannot be removed either with a brush, or with a thread, or with an irrigator, or with the most expensive paste. This is where the most harmful misconception arises - an attempt to “dissolve” stone at home with soda, lemon, vinegar or peroxide. These products are indeed capable of slightly lightening the surface, but at the same time they destroy the enamel, which, unlike bone, is not restored. As a result, the stone remains in place, the enamel becomes thinner, the teeth become sensitive and begin to darken faster than before. The danger of the stone itself is also underestimated: it is dangerous not because of its appearance, but because it holds a colony of bacteria near the gums and triggers inflammation, which over time destroys the bone around the tooth.

Malocclusions
The bite is the way the upper and lower teeth fit together. It determines which teeth bear the load when chewing, how pressure is distributed between them, how muscles and joints work, and even how individual speech sounds are formed. Hence the main misconception, due to which treatment is postponed for decades: “braces are only for beauty.” In reality, a beautiful smile is a pleasant result, but it is not the only result. Incorrect closure means that some of the teeth are overloaded and are worn out faster than expected, and some are not involved in chewing at all; in crowded areas it is impossible to properly clean the contact surfaces, and caries and gum inflammation appear there earlier; with a deep bite, the lower incisors injure the mucous membrane of the palate; when open, the pronunciation of whistling and hissing sounds is disrupted and the method of swallowing changes. Orthodontics is first and foremost about the function and preservation of teeth, and secondarily about appearance.

Bruxism (teeth grinding)
Bruxism is an involuntary activity of the masticatory muscles in which a person grinds their teeth or clenches their jaw tightly without realizing it. The most famous explanation for teeth grinding - “it's from worms” - is not confirmed: the connection between parasites and bruxism has never been proven, and treatment for worms does not stop the grinding. This myth has persisted for centuries simply because both phenomena are more often noticed in children, and the coincidence in time is easily mistaken for the reason. The real mechanisms are completely different and lie in the area of the nervous system, sleep quality and stress levels. The problem is not harmless: the force with which the muscles compress the jaws during sleep is many times greater than that developed during normal chewing, because protective control is turned off during sleep. This is why teeth that have withstood food for years are worn down and cracked by their own owner.

Trigeminal neuralgia
Trigeminal neuralgia is one of the most excruciating pains known to medicine. It occurs in sudden attacks, similar to an electric shock to half the face, lasts from a few seconds to two minutes and can be repeated dozens of times a day. The peculiarity of this condition is that it almost always does not first reach a neurologist: the pain is felt in the area of the teeth, and patients often manage to remove one or more healthy teeth before the real cause is found out.

Lichen planus
Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory disease in which immune cells attack the basal layer of the skin and mucous membranes. The name is misleading: it has nothing to do with fungal “lichens” and is not contagious. It manifests itself very characteristically - flat shiny nodules of a violet-red hue with severe itching, and on the oral mucosa - a white lace pattern. Skin rashes usually go away within a year or two, but the form in the oral cavity can persist for years and requires monitoring.
