Sialadenitis (inflammation of the salivary gland)
Sialadenitis is an inflammation of the salivary gland, most often the parotid or submandibular gland. Saliva is produced continuously and flows through a narrow duct into the mouth; if the outflow is disrupted by a stone, thick secretion or compression, the gland swells, and bacteria easily multiply in stagnant saliva. The typical presentation is a painful swelling on the side of the face or under the jaw, which is aggravated by the sight and smell of food. The disease can be acute and chronic, unilateral and bilateral. The most common causes in adults are dehydration, salivary stones and poor oral hygiene; in children, a viral infection. Timely treatment usually allows you to avoid surgery.

Sjögren's syndrome
Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the glands that produce saliva and tears. The mucous membranes stop moisturizing: the eyes turn red and hurt, as if sand had gotten into them, the mouth is constantly dry, it is difficult to eat dry food and talk for a long time. Caries develops quickly, the tongue becomes inflamed, and jams occur. The disease can be primary when it occurs on its own, and secondary when it occurs against the background of rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus or another rheumatic disease. In addition to the glands, the entire body can suffer: joint pain, severe fatigue, dry skin and vagina, and sometimes the lungs, kidneys and nerves are affected.

Chip and crack of tooth
Tooth chipping is the breaking off of a part of hard tissue due to injury, chewing hard food, or against the background of an already weakened tooth with a large filling. A crack is distinguished by the fact that a piece does not separate: the enamel and dentin split, but the fragments stay together, and the tooth hurts when biting. How urgent this is depends on the depth: a chip of only the enamel is often cosmetic, and if dentin or a nerve is exposed, the tooth becomes sensitive to cold and sweet things and can become inflamed. It is better to show even an unnoticeable chip to the dentist: the sharp edge injures the tongue and cheek, and bacteria quickly reach the pulp through damaged tissue.

Salivary stone disease (sialolithiasis)
Salivary stone disease is the formation of dense stones in the duct or tissue of the salivary gland. The stone prevents saliva from entering the oral cavity, and when the gland begins to actively work, the secretion accumulates inside. Hence the main identifying sign: swelling and bursting pain that occurs during eating or even at the sight of food, and decreases some time after the meal. Most often, the submandibular gland suffers because its duct is long, goes upward, and saliva is thicker. Stagnation of secretion sooner or later leads to inflammation of the gland, so the problem should not be postponed.

Dry mouth (xerostomia)
Xerostomia is a feeling of dry mouth due to lack of saliva. Saliva does more than just moisturize: it washes away food debris, neutralizes acids, contains protective proteins and minerals, and helps form a food bolus and sense taste. When there is not enough of it, multiple caries, gum inflammation, candidiasis and bad breath quickly develop, and wearing removable dentures becomes painful. The most common cause is taking medications: dry mouth is caused by hundreds of medications, from blood pressure medications and diuretics to antihistamines and antidepressants. Less commonly associated with it are diabetes, dehydration, radiation therapy and autoimmune diseases.

Dental fluorosis
Fluorosis is a disorder of enamel formation caused by excess fluoride intake during the period when teeth are still developing inside the jaw, that is, until about the age of eight. The cells that build enamel do not work properly, leaving more protein and less minerals in the enamel. Outwardly, it looks like chalky stripes and spots; in more severe forms, it looks like brown areas and pits on the surface of the tooth. Fluorosis always affects symmetrical teeth because they were formed at the same time. It does not hurt or destroy the tooth like tooth decay, but it does noticeably affect the appearance of your smile.

Cheilitis and seizures
Cheilitis is an inflammation of the lips and surrounding skin, and seizures (angular cheilitis) are a special case of it affecting the corners of the mouth. The red border of the lips lacks a full protective layer and has almost no sebaceous glands, so it easily dries out, cracks and becomes inflamed. The reasons are varied: cold and wind, the habit of licking and biting lips, allergies to toothpaste or lipstick, fungal and bacterial infections in the corners of the mouth, deficiency of iron and B vitamins, malocclusion and old dentures, due to which saliva accumulates in the folds. Treatment is effective only if the cause is found, otherwise the cracks return.

Epulis (growth on the gum)
Epulis is a benign growth of gum tissue near a tooth, most often in the area between the teeth on the front and sides of the jaw. It looks like a dense or soft nodule on a stalk or wide base, the color varies from pale pink to bluish-purple. This is not a tumor in the usual sense, but a reaction of the gums to prolonged irritation: an overhanging edge of a filling, a sharp edge of a decayed tooth, tartar, a poorly fitting denture. Hormonal changes also play a role, so epulis often appears in pregnant women. The formation usually does not hurt, but it interferes with chewing, bleeds during cleaning and grows without treatment, so it is removed and necessarily sent for histological examination.

Erosion of tooth enamel
Enamel erosion is the gradual dissolution of hard tooth tissues by acids, not associated with the work of caries bacteria. The acid softens the surface of the enamel, and it gradually loses its thickness: the teeth become sensitive to cold and sour things, they become dull, the cutting edge begins to show through, and saucer-shaped depressions appear on the chewing surfaces. The source of acid can be external - soda, juice, wine, sports drinks - or internal, when stomach acid enters the mouth due to reflux or frequent vomiting. The enamel does not repair itself, so it is important to find and remove the cause as early as possible: stopping the process is easier than restoring damaged teeth.

Tooth cyst
A dental cyst is a cavity with a dense shell that forms in the bone at the apex of the root at the site of long-simmering inflammation. It all starts in the tooth canal: the pulp dies from deep caries, injury or under a loose filling, the canal turns into a closed reservoir with bacteria and decay products, and the body fences off this focus from the healthy bone with a wall of connective tissue. The most persistent and most expensive misconception in terms of consequences sounds like this: “I’ll take an antibiotic and the cyst will resolve.” It won't resolve. An antibiotic can extinguish an exacerbation and relieve swelling, but it does not reach the source: there is no blood flow inside the dead canal, which means the medicine simply does not get there. As soon as the course is completed, bacteria from the canal again begin to feed the lesion, and the cavity continues to grow - silently, for years, until it makes itself known with flux or an accidental finding in the picture.
