Ameloblastoma of the jaw
Ameloblastoma is a tumor of the jaw that develops from the remnants of tissue that forms enamel during the formation of teeth. Most often it occurs in the area of the angle and ramus of the lower jaw. Formally, the tumor is benign: it does not metastasize and grows slowly over years. But it behaves aggressively in place: it gradually inflates and destroys the bone from the inside, displaces teeth, and thins the outer bone plate. There is usually no pain, so patients come late - when noticeable facial asymmetry appears. Often a tumor is found by chance in a dentist's X-ray. The key feature of treatment: after insufficient intervention, the tumor often returns, so the approach must be radical.

Aphthae in the mouth (aphthous stomatitis)
Aphthae are small painful ulcers on the oral mucosa: round or oval, with a grayish or yellowish bottom and a bright red rim. More often they appear on the inside of the lips and cheeks, under the tongue and on the soft palate - where the mucous membrane is mobile and does not keratinize. Aphthous stomatitis is one of the most common lesions of the oral cavity; Many people have repeated episodes for years. It is not contagious and, unlike herpes, is not accompanied by blisters. The exact cause has not been established, but provoking factors are known: trauma to the mucous membrane, stress, deficiency of iron and B vitamins, hormonal fluctuations, certain foods and intestinal diseases.

Dislocation of the lower jaw
Dislocation of the lower jaw is a condition in which the head of the joint comes out of its socket and cannot return back on its own. Most often this happens when the mouth is opened very wide: during a yawn, screaming, biting off a large piece, a long dental appointment or tooth extraction. A person suddenly discovers that he cannot close his mouth, speech becomes slurred, saliva flows, and pain appears in front of the ear. Dislocation can be unilateral or bilateral, acute and habitual, when it is repeated from the slightest effort. This is not a life-threatening condition, but it requires urgent help: the sooner the jaw is set, the easier it is to do it and the lower the risk of recurrence.

Geographic tongue (desquamative glossitis)
Geographic tongue, or desquamative glossitis, is a benign condition in which smooth red areas appear on the back and sides of the tongue, surrounded by a light, raised rim. The drawing resembles a map of the continents, hence the name. The spots do not stand still: in a few days they change shape and move, they can completely disappear and return. The reason is the temporary loss of filiform papillae in certain areas of the mucosa. The condition is not contagious, is not associated with oncology, and in most people it occurs without complaints, sometimes causing a burning sensation from spicy and sour foods. Special treatment is usually not required, but if the pain persists, you should see a dentist.

Herpetic stomatitis in children
Herpetic stomatitis is the body’s first encounter with the herpes simplex virus, which most often occurs between the ages of six months and five years. The virus causes inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and gums: the temperature rises, the gums become bright red and swollen, blisters appear on the tongue, cheeks and palate, and then painful ulcers with a red rim. The child refuses to eat and drink, saliva flows profusely, and the submandibular lymph nodes become enlarged. The disease goes away on its own in one to two weeks, but the main danger is dehydration due to refusal to drink. Therefore, the main task of parents and the doctor is to numb the mucous membrane and give the child something to drink.

Enamel hypoplasia
Enamel hypoplasia is underdevelopment of enamel that occurs during tooth formation. Unlike caries, in which already formed tissue is destroyed, there is initially less enamel or it is built incorrectly: thinner, softer, with grooves, pits and areas of a different color. The reason is a disruption in the functioning of the cells that build enamel due to illnesses of the mother during pregnancy, serious illnesses and nutritional disorders in the first years of a child’s life, prematurity, and injuries to the tooth germ. Such teeth are sensitive, quickly decay and require early supervision by a dentist, because it is easier to protect them than to treat them later.

Glossalgia (burning tongue)
Glossalgia is a burning, tingling or rawness of the tongue with normal-looking mucous membrane. A person describes the feeling as if the tongue was burned with hot tea or sprinkled with pepper, but the doctor finds no ulcers, no plaque, or inflammation. The burning sensation often affects the tip and lateral edges of the tongue, lips, palate, intensifies in the evening and noticeably weakens while eating - this is what distinguishes glossalgia from most inflammatory diseases of the mouth. Similar complaints may include deficiency of iron and B vitamins, diabetes mellitus, dry mouth, fungal infection and reaction to dentures. When all these reasons are excluded, we are talking about an independent burning mouth syndrome associated with disruption of the sensory nerves.

Glossitis (inflammation of the tongue)
Glossitis is an inflammation of the tissues of the tongue, in which it turns red, swells, becomes painful, and the papillae smooth out or, conversely, grow. This is not a separate disease, but a signal: the causes include injury from a sharp tooth edge or denture, fungal infection, deficiency of iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid, allergies to toothpaste or foods, dry mouth, diabetes mellitus and gastrointestinal diseases. Separately, geographic and folded tongue are distinguished - harmless structural features that do not require treatment. It’s important to understand because a “smooth red tongue” is often the first noticeable sign of anemia or vitamin deficiency.

Bitterness in the mouth
Bitterness in the mouth is a sensation of bitter taste that may appear in the morning, after eating, or persist constantly. People usually associate it with the liver and “stagnation of bile,” but in practice the reasons are much more varied. A bitter or sour taste often causes stomach contents to reflux into the esophagus during reflux disease. Bitterness occurs with diseases of the gums and teeth, dry mouth, after smoking and alcohol, while taking antibiotics and other medications, with taste disturbances after ARVI. Only in some cases the cause is related to the gallbladder. Therefore, treating “bitterness” with choleretic drugs at random is not the best way.

Diastema (gap between front teeth)
Diastema is the space between the central incisors, most often on the upper jaw. In children, during the change of teeth, it occurs very often and usually closes itself when the lateral incisors and canines erupt. In adults, the gap persists if there are anatomical preconditions for it: a low-lying massive frenulum of the upper lip, a discrepancy in the size of the teeth and jaw, a supernumerary tooth between the incisors, the absence of lateral teeth, or the habit of putting the tongue between the incisors. The diastema itself does not harm health, but it confuses many people aesthetically, and sometimes interferes with the pronunciation of sounds. There are several ways to close a gap, and the choice depends on its width and reason.
