Exostosis (osteochondroma)
Exostosis, or osteochondroma, is a benign bone growth with a cartilaginous cap that forms next to the bone growth area. It is the most common benign skeletal tumor; It is usually noticed in teenagers and young adults as a hard, immovable lump near the knee, shoulder, or ankle. The growth grows with the child and, as a rule, stops growing after the growth zones close. Most exostoses are not painful and do not require treatment. Problems arise when the growth presses on a vessel, nerve or tendon, interferes with movement, or is injured by shoes. Rarely, more often with multiple hereditary forms, osteochondroma can degenerate, so the growth needs to be monitored by an orthopedist.

Juvenile kyphosis (Scheuermann-Mau disease)
Scheuermann-Mau disease is a developmental disorder of the vertebrae in adolescence, in which the thoracic spine bends posteriorly more than normal and a persistently round back is formed. Unlike ordinary stoop, this deformity cannot be straightened by force of will or at the request of a doctor: the anterior sections of several neighboring vertebrae grow more slowly than the posterior ones, the vertebrae become wedge-shaped, and the bend is fixed. The disease usually appears between 10 and 15 years of age and is often accompanied by aching back pain after exercise. Early detection is important: while the skeleton is growing, the deformity can be noticeably reduced with exercises and a corset, but after growth is complete, this can no longer be the case.

Hallux valgus deformity
Hallux valgus is when the first toe deviates outward with the formation of a protruding “bunion” at its base. Almost everyone who encounters it describes the problem the same way: “the bone is growing.” This is the most persistent and most harmful misconception on the topic. No new bone is growing. Something else happens: the first metatarsal bone gradually deviates inward, towards the middle of the body, and the big toe, under the pressure of the shoe and the pull of its own tendons, moves outward, towards the other toes. The head of the metatarsal bone remains in place and simply begins to protrude under the skin - it is mistaken for a growth. Understanding this mechanism immediately explains the main practical consequence: what sticks out cannot be “dissolved,” softened, tightened with a bandage, or dissolved with a compress. The displaced bone can only be returned to its place, and this is done exclusively surgically.

Epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
Epicondylitis is pain in the area of the bony prominence of the elbow that occurs due to overload of the tendons that attach to this protrusion. The name “tennis elbow” is historical and misleading: tennis players make up only a small portion of those affected, and the vast majority are people who do not play sports at all. These are office workers who spend the day with a computer mouse, electricians and plumbers, hairdressers, cooks, musicians, drivers, young parents who repeatedly lift their child in outstretched arms. The second persistent misconception concerns treatment: it is believed that you need rest, and the pain will go away on its own. Rest really reduces the pain, but does not restore the tendon - the tissue, weakened by inactivity, becomes even more vulnerable, and the pain returns at the first load. The basis of treatment has long been recognized not as rest or injections, but as special exercises.

Dupuytren's contracture
Dupuytren's contracture is a disease in which the connective tissue plate under the skin of the palm, the palmar aponeurosis, gradually thickens, shortens and pulls the fingers towards the palm. First, a small dense nodule appears, which is often mistaken for a callus, then a dense cord stretches from it to the finger, and at some point the finger stops fully extending. The key feature of this disease and the main reason for late visits is that it hardly hurts. A person lives for years with a gradually bending little or ring finger, adapts and comes to the doctor only when the hand no longer fits in the pocket, it is impossible to put on a glove or wash. Meanwhile, there is a simple way to understand that the moment has come - try to place your palm flat on the table.

Carpal tunnel syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common compressive neuropathy. The median nerve is compressed in a narrow canal at the level of the wrist, and the person begins to wake up at night with numbness and burning in the fingers. A characteristic detail by which the syndrome is recognized almost unmistakably: the thumb, index, middle and half of the ring finger are affected, while the little finger remains normal. The initial stages respond well to conservative treatment, but neglected compression leads to irreversible atrophy of the hand muscles.

Radiculopathy
Radiculopathy is damage to the nerve root as it exits the spine. In everyday life it is called “pinched nerve” or radiculitis. A distinctive feature is that the pain does not remain in the back, but “shoots” along the nerve: in the arm to the fingers if the cervical spine is affected, or in the buttock and along the back of the leg with lumbar pain. Along with the pain comes numbness and weakness. Most cases resolve with conservative treatment, but there are several situations in which delay is dangerous.

Cerebral palsy (CP)
Cerebral palsy is a group of permanent movement and posture disorders caused by damage to the immature brain before birth, during childbirth, or in the first months of life. The key thing that parents need to understand is that brain damage itself does not progress - it happened once and does not increase. Something else changes: the child grows, and without work, secondary problems form - contractures, dislocations, deformities. That is why early and regular rehabilitation treatment determines the result more than any drugs.
