Whipple's disease
Whipple's disease is a rare chronic infection caused by the bacterium Tropheryma whipplei. The microorganism is found in the environment and disappears without a trace in many people, but in some patients with peculiarities of the immune response, it colonizes the mucous membrane of the small intestine. Cells designed to destroy the bacterium accumulate it inside themselves and clog the intestinal lymphatic pathways, which impairs the absorption of nutrients. The insidiousness of the disease is that the first and only complaints for years are usually pain in the joints, and the person is treated for a rheumatic disease. Later, diarrhea, weight loss and weakness follow. Without treatment, the disease is life-threatening, but properly selected antibiotics can cure it.

Botulism
Botulism is severe poisoning from the toxin of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The bacterium lives in the soil in the form of spores, and multiplies and releases toxin where there is no oxygen: in hermetically sealed jars with mushrooms, vegetables, fish and home-cooked meat. The toxin blocks the transmission of signals from nerves to muscles, so the disease is not manifested by diarrhea, but by increasing muscle weakness: first, double vision, drooping eyelids, it becomes difficult to swallow and speak, then breathing becomes weaker. The temperature usually remains normal. Botulism is an emergency: at the first signs, you should immediately call an ambulance by calling 103, because the introduction of antitoxin is effective only in the early stages.

Sudden exanthema (roseola)
Sudden exanthema, or infantile roseola, is a very common viral infection of children from six months to three years old, caused by the human herpes virus type six. Its scenario is recognizable: three to four days of high fever without cough, runny nose or other visible causes, and then the temperature sharply normalizes and a pale pink rash appears on the body. The child is already feeling quite well. It is because of the high temperature without an obvious focus that parents have time to go to several doctors and get tested, and the diagnosis becomes clear only with the appearance of a rash. The disease goes away on its own and does not require special treatment.

High temperature in adults (fever)
Fever is not a disease, but a protective reaction: the body raises its temperature to make it difficult for microbes to multiply and activate the immune system. In adults, the most common cause is viral respiratory tract infections, which resolve within a few days. However, pneumonia, urinary tract infection, inflammation of the biliary tract, as well as non-infectious causes: autoimmune and oncological diseases, reactions to medications can be hidden under the fever. You need to focus not only on the number on the thermometer, but also on your state of health and accompanying symptoms. An important principle: the temperature is reduced for the sake of relief, and not for the sake of a normal number, and fever for more than three days or without an obvious reason requires examination by a doctor.

Hepatitis A (Botkin's disease)
Hepatitis A is an acute viral inflammation of the liver that is transmitted through contaminated water, food and dirty hands. The virus is excreted in the stool of a sick person and spreads especially easily where hygiene and water supply rules are violated. The disease is known as jaundice or Botkin's disease, although in young children it often occurs without any yellowing of the skin at all. An important difference from hepatitis B and C: hepatitis A never becomes chronic and does not lead to cirrhosis. After an infection, lifelong immunity remains, and vaccination allows you to reliably protect yourself in advance.

Hepatitis D (delta infection)
Hepatitis D is caused by an unusual virus: it is defective and cannot reproduce on its own, so it exists only in the presence of the hepatitis B virus, using its shell. You can become infected with delta infection either simultaneously with hepatitis B, or later, already having chronic hepatitis B. The second option is more dangerous: it often leads to a sharp exacerbation and rapid progression of the disease. Of all viral hepatitis, the combination of B and D is considered the most severe - cirrhosis and liver failure develop faster. The good news is that the hepatitis B vaccine also protects against hepatitis D, because without the B virus, the delta virus does not take root.

Hepatitis E
Hepatitis E is an acute viral inflammation of the liver, which is transmitted mainly through contaminated water, as well as through insufficiently heat-treated pig and game meat. The disease is common in regions with water supply problems and often causes outbreaks after floods and water supply accidents. In most people, hepatitis E proceeds like ordinary jaundice: weakness, nausea, dark urine, yellowing of the skin, and ends with complete recovery in a few weeks without becoming chronic. However, in pregnant women, especially in the third trimester, the disease can be extremely severe, so they need special vigilance and mandatory medical supervision.

Diphtheria
Diphtheria is an acute bacterial infection caused by the diphtheria bacillus. The microbe most often settles on the tonsils and releases a toxin that damages the tissue at the site and is carried by the blood, affecting the heart, nerves and kidneys. Dense grayish-white films form in the throat, tightly adhered to the mucous membrane: they are difficult to remove, and a bleeding surface remains underneath them. The danger of the disease is not a sore throat, but toxin poisoning and possible closure of the airways with films, especially in children. Diphtheria is controlled by vaccinations, and mainly affects unvaccinated people or people who did not receive revaccination on time. Treatment is carried out only in a hospital.

Yersiniosis and pseudotuberculosis
Yersiniosis and pseudotuberculosis are related intestinal infections that are caused by the bacteria Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis. Their peculiarity is that they reproduce well in the cold, so the source is usually vegetables and root vegetables that have been stored for a long time in the cellar or refrigerator, as well as salads made from raw cabbage and carrots. The disease is rarely limited to the intestines: in addition to diarrhea and abdominal pain, fever, rash, joint pain, and liver enlargement appear. Yersinia loves the lymph nodes of the mesentery, which is why the pain is concentrated on the lower right and is often mistaken for appendicitis.

Erythema infectiosum (parvovirus B19)
Erythema infectiosum, or fifth disease, is a common childhood infection caused by parvovirus B19. The virus is transmitted by airborne droplets and through blood, infecting red blood cell precursor cells in the bone marrow. In a child, the illness usually begins as a mild cold, and after a few days the most recognizable sign appears: bright red cheeks, as if they had been spanked, and a lacy pink rash on the arms, legs and torso. By the time the rash appears, the child is no longer contagious and feels well. In adults, joint pain comes to the fore. The infection is dangerous for pregnant women and people with blood diseases.
