Enteritis (inflammation of the small intestine)
Enteritis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the small intestine, the section where the bulk of food is digested and absorbed. When the mucous membrane becomes inflamed, water and nutrients stop being absorbed and go out: profuse watery stools, rumbling, bloating and cramping pain around the navel appear. Most often, enteritis is acute and caused by infection - viruses or bacteria from poor-quality food and water; This condition goes away in a few days, and the main thing with it is to prevent dehydration. Chronic enteritis develops with celiac disease, Crohn's disease, long-term use of painkillers, after radiation therapy and leads to weight loss and vitamin deficiency.

Enterovirus infection (Coxsackie, herpangina)
Enteroviruses are a large group of viruses that include the Coxsackie and ECHO viruses. They spread through dirty hands, water, objects and airborne droplets, and outbreaks most often occur in the warm season. Manifestations vary widely, from normal fever without other symptoms to herpangina with mouth ulcers and hand-foot-mouth syndrome with blisters on the palms and soles. Mostly children are affected; adults tolerate the infection more easily. In most cases, everything ends with recovery within a week, but there are also severe forms with damage to the nervous system that you need to be aware of.

Mumps (mumps)
Mumps, commonly known as mumps, is a viral infection that primarily affects the parotid salivary glands. Due to their swelling, the face acquires a characteristic round shape, hence the name. The virus is transmitted by airborne droplets, and before mass vaccination, the disease was one of the most common childhood infections. The disease is dangerous not because of the swelling itself, but because of its complications: inflammation of the testicles in boys and men, the pancreas, the meninges, as well as persistent hearing loss. Reliable protection exists - a combined vaccination, which is given in childhood.

Escherichiosis (Escherichia coli)
Escherichia coli lives constantly in the human intestine and is normally harmless, but there are pathogenic varieties. Getting in with unboiled water, poorly washed vegetables, undercooked meat, unpasteurized milk or through dirty hands, they cause escherichiosis - an acute intestinal infection with diarrhea, abdominal cramps and nausea. Most cases are mild and end with recovery within a few days. However, some strains produce a toxin that damages blood vessels and can cause bloody diarrhea and a dangerous complication of kidney damage, especially in children and the elderly. Therefore, if there is blood in the stool and a decrease in the amount of urine, you need a doctor, and not self-medication.

Brucellosis
Brucellosis is an infection that humans contract from animals: cows, sheep, goats and camels. The main routes of transmission are unpasteurized milk and products made from it: homemade cottage cheese, kaymak, fresh cheese, as well as direct contact with animals and their secretions during lambing, milking or cutting up the carcass. For our region, this is not exotic, but a completely relevant disease, especially in rural areas and where dairy products are bought on the market from private traders. It is difficult to identify brucellosis for one reason: it does not give any specific symptoms. Prolonged wave-like temperature, debilitating sweating, weakness and pain in the joints and back fit into dozens of other diagnoses, so the patient often spends months being treated for “unclear fever”, ARVI or radiculitis. Meanwhile, the key to diagnosis almost always lies in one question that is simply not asked: what you ate and what animals you came into contact with.

Food poisoning
Food poisoning is an acute digestive disorder after eating food containing bacteria, viruses or their toxins. In most cases, it proceeds violently, but not for long: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain last from several hours to two or three days and go away on their own. The danger is created not by infection as such, but by the loss of fluid and salts - it is dehydration, especially in children and the elderly, that turns a household nuisance into a condition requiring an IV. Therefore, the main practical skill here is not “how to treat,” but the ability to determine two things in time: whether a person drinks enough and whether signs have appeared for which home treatment is unacceptable. Separately, it is imperative to know the symptoms of botulism, a rare but deadly form of poisoning associated with home canned food: it does not begin with diarrhea, but with visual impairment and swallowing.

Meningitis
Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. This is one of the few diseases where a delay of several hours changes the outcome: bacterial meningitis without treatment can lead to death within 24 hours, and antibiotic therapy started on time saves lives and prevents serious consequences. Therefore, if there is a combination of high fever, severe headache and the inability to press your chin to your chest, you should not “watch until the morning”, but call an ambulance.
