Meningococcal infection
Meningococcal infection is one of the most rapid bacterial diseases. The pathogen lives in the nasopharynx, and in some people without any symptoms, but when it enters the bloodstream it causes severe blood poisoning, and when it penetrates the membranes of the brain, purulent meningitis. The peculiarity of the disease is its speed: from the first complaints, similar to a common cold, to a life-threatening condition can take several hours. The most alarming sign is a rash in the form of dark spots and stars that do not fade when pressed. Young children and adolescents are more likely to get sick. Delay is the most dangerous thing here: if you suspect, you should immediately call an ambulance by calling 103.

Mycoplasma pneumonia
Mycoplasma pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs caused by the bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae. It is classified as an atypical pathogen: mycoplasma does not have a cell wall, so the usual penicillins do not affect it. School-aged children, adolescents and young adults are more likely to be affected, and outbreaks occur in classrooms, dormitories and families. The onset is usually gradual: low fever, weakness, pain in the throat and head last for several days, then a persistent dry cough develops, which can persist for weeks. The state of health often remains tolerable, which is why the disease is called walking pneumonia and it is too late to consult a doctor. The diagnosis is confirmed by x-rays and tests, and the doctor selects the antibiotic based on age.

Monocytosis (increased monocytes)
Monocytes are large white blood cells that are the first to arrive at the site of inflammation, absorb microbes and dead cells, and then turn into tissue macrophages. In a general blood test, their share usually amounts to several percent of all leukocytes. Monocytosis is an increase in their absolute number. Most often, this is a reflection of the usual process: the body is fighting an infection or completing recovery from an illness. This monocytosis is temporary and does not require treatment. A persistent increase that persists for months, especially together with changes in other blood parameters, enlarged lymph nodes or weight loss, requires consultation with a hematologist and additional examination.

Mosquito fever (papatachi)
Sandfly fever, or papatachi fever, is a viral infection transmitted by small mosquitoes of the genus Phlebotomus. They are active in the warm season, at dusk and at night, penetrate through a regular mesh due to their small size and most often bite exposed areas of skin. A few days after the bite, the temperature suddenly rises, severe headache, aches, pain in the eyes when moving and redness of the sclera appear. The illness lasts an average of three days and ends with recovery, but weakness and weakness may persist for another one or two weeks. There is no specific treatment, help is symptomatic, but similar symptoms occur with more dangerous infections, so the diagnosis is made by a doctor.

Mucormycosis
Mucormycosis is a rare but very aggressive infection caused by molds of the order Mucorales. Their spores are constantly present in the air, soil and spoiled foods and are safe for a healthy person. The disease develops when the body’s defenses are sharply weakened: with decompensated diabetes mellitus and ketoacidosis, blood diseases, after organ transplantation, against the background of long-term use of glucocorticoids or severe infection. Fungi grow into the walls of blood vessels, block blood flow and cause tissue death - most often in the nose, sinuses, eye socket and lungs. The disease develops rapidly, so if suspected, immediate hospitalization is necessary: the outcome directly depends on how early antifungal therapy and surgical treatment are started.

Norovirus infection
Norovirus is the most common cause of viral gastroenteritis outbreaks in adults and children. It is characterized by extremely high contagiousness: a tiny amount of viral particles is enough, so the disease quickly spreads to families, classrooms, hotels and canteens. The typical picture is a sudden onset with profuse vomiting and watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, weakness, and sometimes low fever. The condition is severe, but short: most often it ends in 1–3 days. The main danger is dehydration, especially in young children and the elderly, so the central task of treatment is to correctly and persistently replenish fluid loss.

Night sweats
Night sweats are profuse sweating during sleep, which causes you to change your underwear, and not just perspiration in a stuffy room. First, external causes are always excluded: a hot bedroom, a warm synthetic blanket, spicy food and alcohol at night. If sleep conditions are normal, and sweating continues for weeks, look for an internal cause. Most often these are hormonal changes during menopause, increased thyroid function, nightly decreases in sugar in people with diabetes, and taking certain medications. Less commonly, night sweats are a sign of chronic infection, including tuberculosis, or blood diseases, especially if it is combined with weight loss and persistent fever.

Chills
Chills are a feeling of cold with muscle tremors, where muscles frequently contract to quickly raise body temperature. Most often, this is a reaction to an infection: immune substances shift the thermoregulation set point upward, and the body rushes to warm up to a new level. Therefore, chills usually precede the rise in temperature by tens of minutes. But shivering can occur even without fever - with hypothermia, low glucose levels, anemia, decreased thyroid function, and severe anxiety. Separately, stunning chills with severe trembling are distinguished: it occurs with pyelonephritis, pneumonia, purulent foci and blood poisoning. You need to focus not on the chill itself, but on the accompanying signs and the rate of deterioration of the condition.

Shingles (herpes zoster)
Shingles, or herpes zoster, is a disease caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus. After chickenpox, usually suffered in childhood, the virus remains in the nerve ganglia for life and can “wake up” if the immune system is weakened. It travels along the nerve to the skin, causing severe burning pain and a blistering rash in a stripe on one side of the body, usually on the chest, abdomen or face. It mainly affects people over 50 years of age and those with weakened immune systems. The most common complications are long-term postherpetic neuralgia and eye damage. Antiviral treatment is most effective if started within 72 hours of the rash appearing. For older people, there is vaccination.

Acute intestinal infection
Acute intestinal infection is a group of diseases in which the pathogen or its toxins damage the mucous membrane of the stomach and intestines. The cause is viruses, bacteria and protozoa that enter with contaminated food, water or through dirty hands. The symptoms are similar: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, loose stools, and often fever. In hot climates during the summer, the risk is especially high due to the rapid spoilage of food. Most cases resolve within a few days, and the decisive factor is not the search for a “cure for the infection,” but the proper replacement of fluids and salts that are lost through stool and vomiting.
