Ophthalmoherpes (herpes of the eye)
Ophthalmoherpes is damage to the eye by the herpes simplex virus, which, after the first encounter with the body, remains forever in the nerve ganglia and is activated from time to time. Most often, the cornea suffers: a characteristic tree-like ulcer appears on it, the eye turns red, watery, hurts and is afraid of light. The danger is that with repeated exacerbations, the cornea becomes cloudy and scars remain on it, and this permanently reduces vision. A separate problem is self-medication with hormonal drops: for herpetic ulcers, they sharply worsen the course of the disease. Treatment is prescribed only by an ophthalmologist after examination.

Pneumococcal infection
Pneumococcus is a bacterium that often lives in the nasopharynx of healthy people, especially children, without causing any complaints. But when the protection is weakened, for example after a viral infection, it spreads to neighboring organs and causes otitis media, sinusitis, bronchitis and pneumonia, and in severe cases penetrates the blood and membranes of the brain. Pneumococcus remains one of the main causes of community-acquired pneumonia and purulent meningitis in young children and the elderly. The disease is treated with antibiotics, but resistance to them is growing, and severe forms develop quickly. The most reliable measure of protection is vaccination of children and adults from risk groups.

Poliomyelitis
Poliomyelitis is a viral infection that affects the motor neurons of the spinal cord. The virus is transmitted through dirty hands, water and food, enters the intestines and in most infected people it is asymptomatic or as a mild intestinal disorder. However, in a small proportion of people, it enters the nervous system and destroys the cells that control muscles. Then flaccid paralysis develops, often asymmetrical, usually in the legs, and it can remain for life because the dead neurons are not restored. There is no medicine that kills the virus, so vaccination is key. Thanks to mass vaccinations, the disease is extremely rare, but the threat remains if immunization is refused.

Diarrhea (diarrhea) in a child
Diarrhea in a child is frequent loose or watery stools, which is most often caused by intestinal viruses, less often by bacteria, parasites and nutritional errors. In most children, acute diarrhea lasts from three days to a week and goes away on its own. The main danger is not the infection itself, but the loss of water and salts: the younger the child, the faster dehydration develops. Therefore, the basis of assistance remains drinking solutions for oral rehydration, and not fixatives. Antibiotics for viral diarrhea are useless and are prescribed by a doctor only according to strict indications. If the stool is bloody, the temperature is high, the child refuses to drink or becomes lethargic, an examination is needed without delay.

Herpes simplex (cold sores on the lips)
Herpes simplex on the lips is a viral infection most often caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1. Having become infected once, usually in childhood, a person remains a carrier: the virus “sleeps” in the nerve ganglia and when the protection is weakened, it comes out on the skin. An exacerbation begins with a burning sensation and tingling, then a group of painful blisters appears, which open and become crusty. For most people, the episode goes away on its own within 7–10 days. The danger is posed by frequent severe relapses, transmission of infection to the eyes, as well as infection of newborns and people with weakened immune systems. Antiviral drugs started in the first hours significantly reduce exacerbation.

Pseudomembranous colitis (clostridial infection)
Pseudomembranous colitis is a severe inflammation of the colon caused by the bacterium Clostridioides difficile. It may be present in the intestines in small quantities, but begins to multiply rapidly when antibiotics destroy competing microflora. The bacterium releases toxins that damage the mucous membrane: characteristic yellowish deposits appear on it - pseudomembranes. The main manifestation is profuse, watery diarrhea that occurs during a course of antibiotics or for several weeks after it, often with abdominal pain and fever. The condition requires medical attention: self-medication with drugs that stop diarrhea is dangerous.

Respiratory syncytial infection (RSV)
Respiratory syncytial virus is one of the most common causes of colds. Almost all children experience this infection in the first two years of life, and for most it goes away like a normal ARVI with a runny nose and cough. The danger is that in infants the virus descends into the small bronchi and causes bronchiolitis: breathing becomes frequent and wheezing, and it is difficult for the child to breastfeed. Children in the first months of life, premature babies and babies with heart and lung defects are especially vulnerable. In adults, MS infection is usually mild, but in old age and with chronic lung diseases it can cause severe exacerbation. There is no specific antiviral treatment, support is supportive.

Erysipelas (erysipelas)
Erysipelas, or erysipelas, is an acute bacterial infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue caused by beta-hemolytic streptococcus. Bacteria penetrate through minor injuries: cracks in the heels, diaper rash between the toes, abrasions, bites. The disease usually begins suddenly with chills and high fever, and after a few hours a bright red, hot, swollen area with clear, jagged edges appears on the skin. Most often the legs are affected, less often the face and hands. Without treatment, the infection spreads and can lead to suppuration, tissue death and sepsis. Erysipelas are prone to relapses, which damage the lymphatic vessels and cause persistent swelling. Antibiotics are prescribed by the doctor.

Sepsis
Sepsis, which in everyday life is called blood poisoning, is not just the entry of microbes into the bloodstream, but a life-threatening reaction of the body to an infection, in which its own organs begin to fail. It can be triggered by any source: pneumonia, kidney inflammation, purulent wound, appendicitis, infection after surgery or childbirth. The immune response becomes excessive, the blood vessels and coagulation system suffer, blood pressure decreases, and the blood supply to the kidneys, liver, lungs and brain is disrupted. Timing is key: the sooner antibiotics and circulatory support are started, the better the chances. Therefore, if an infection is combined with severe weakness, confusion and rapid breathing, you should immediately call an ambulance by calling 103.

Neonatal sepsis
Neonatal sepsis is a severe generalized infection in which the pathogen enters the bloodstream and causes a systemic response in the body. Immune defenses in the first weeks of life are still immature, so the infection spreads quickly, and the condition can worsen in a matter of hours. There are early sepsis, which begins in the first three days and is associated with the microflora of the mother’s birth canal, and late sepsis, which develops later and is often caused by nosocomial or home pathogens. The main feature is extremely nonspecific manifestations: the child is simply lethargic, eats poorly, and the temperature is unstable. That is why, at the slightest suspicion, doctors start antibiotics immediately, first taking blood for culture.
