How the test works
A minimal dose of prostaglandin E1 is injected into the corpus cavernosum with a thin needle (the injection is almost painless), an erection develops within 10–20 minutes, and Doppler records the peak systolic velocity (the norm is above 30–35 cm/s - the arteries are healthy) and the end-diastolic velocity (above 5 cm/s with a full erection - a sign of venous leakage). Normal indicators with a weak “home” erection indicate a psychogenic component. Treatment is based on the results: for arterial insufficiency - shock therapy and drugs, for venous leakage - rings, injections or prosthetics. After the test, the patient is observed until complete relaxation; a rare risk is a prolonged erection, which can be treated by a doctor.
