Otomycosis (ear fungus)
Otomycosis is a fungal inflammation of the external auditory canal, less commonly the middle ear. It is caused by mold and yeast-like fungi, which normally live on the skin, but begin to actively multiply with increased humidity, injuries to the skin of the ear and after courses of antibacterial ear drops. The leading complaint is persistent itching, which is accompanied by congestion, noise, hearing loss and discharge of an unusual type: whitish, gray, greenish or with black dots. Otomycosis is often mistaken for ordinary otitis and treated with inappropriate drops, which only makes it worse. The basis of proper treatment is thorough cleaning of the ear by a doctor and antifungal agents.

Otosclerosis
Otosclerosis is a disease in which pathological bone tissue grows in the bone capsule of the inner ear and gradually immobilizes the stapes, the smallest auditory bone. Sound vibrations are no longer transmitted to the inner ear, and hearing slowly decreases, often in both ears, although unevenly. The disease usually begins between the ages of 20 and 40, more often in women, and often first appears or worsens during pregnancy. Characteristic signs are a gradual decrease in hearing, tinnitus and the paradoxical feeling that one can hear better in a noisy environment. Otosclerosis responds well to surgical treatment.

Laryngeal papillomatosis
Laryngeal papillomatosis is a disease in which multiple warty formations grow on the mucous membrane of the larynx, most often on the vocal folds. They are caused by the human papillomavirus, mainly types 6 and 11. The peculiarity of the disease is that papillomas stubbornly return after removal, which is why it is called recurrent. In children, infection usually occurs during childbirth, and the first sign is hoarseness, which has long been mistaken for the consequences of a cold. In adults, the disease is milder. The main danger is a gradual narrowing of the lumen of the larynx with breathing problems.

Peritonsillar abscess
Peritonsillar abscess is an accumulation of pus in the tissue around the tonsil. Most often, it develops as a complication of sore throat or exacerbation of chronic tonsillitis on the fifth to seventh day of illness, when, after some improvement, the sore throat sharply intensifies and becomes one-sided. Characterized by the inability to open the mouth wide, pain when swallowing, radiating to the ear, a nasal voice, drooling and high fever. This is an emergency: the pus can spread to the tissue of the neck and chest. The treatment is surgical - the doctor opens the abscess and prescribes antibiotics; in case of repeated episodes, removal of the tonsils is discussed.

Paresis and paralysis of the larynx
Paresis of the larynx is a limitation of the mobility of the vocal fold, paralysis is its complete immobility. The cause most often lies not in the larynx itself, but in damage to the nerve that controls it. The recurrent laryngeal nerve travels a long way: it descends into the chest and returns to the larynx, bending around large vessels, so it is vulnerable during operations on the thyroid gland, tumors of the lung and mediastinum, diseases of the aorta and heart. The fixed fold does not close with the healthy one, and the voice becomes weak, breathy, and choking appears when drinking. Bilateral paralysis is dangerous due to breathing problems.

Nose fracture
A nasal fracture is a disruption of the integrity of the bones of the back of the nose, most often after a blow, fall or sports injury. This is the most common facial fracture because the nasal bones are thin and protrude. Immediately after the injury, pain, bleeding, rapid swelling and bruising around the eyes appear, due to which the displacement is not noticeable. The main danger is not the fracture itself, but the fact that improperly fused fragments permanently change the shape of the nose and impair breathing, and an unrecognized hematoma of the septum can lead to its destruction. Therefore, you need to visit an ENT doctor in the first days, while simple reposition is possible.

Perichondritis of the auricle
Perichondritis is an inflammation of the perichondrium of the auricle, the thin membrane that nourishes the cartilage. Cartilage does not have its own vessels, so when it becomes inflamed and accumulates pus, it quickly becomes deprived of nutrition and dies. The result can be a permanent deformation of the ear, which is popularly called “wrestler’s ear.” Most often, perichondritis begins after a puncture of cartilage, injury, burn, insect bite, or spread of infection from the external auditory canal. A typical pathogen is Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The shell becomes red, hot, swollen and very painful, while the earlobe remains unchanged. Treatment begins as early as possible.

Perforation of the eardrum
The eardrum is a thin membrane that separates the external auditory canal from the middle ear. It transmits sound vibrations and at the same time protects the middle ear from water and germs. Perforation is a hole in the membrane that occurs during purulent otitis media, when pus breaks out, due to injury with a cotton swab or other object, due to a sudden change in pressure, and due to a blow to the ear. Typical signs are sudden subsidence of pain with the appearance of discharge, decreased hearing and noise in the ear. Many small perforations heal on their own within a few weeks, but during this time the ear must be protected from water.

Vocal fold polyp
Vocal fold polyp is a benign formation on the mucous membrane of the vocal cord, often unilateral. It occurs where the ligament is constantly overloaded: during screaming, prolonged loud speech, singing without technique, against the background of smoking and chronic inflammation of the larynx. Fluid accumulates in the damaged area and tissue grows, the fold ceases to close completely, and the voice becomes hoarse and hoarse. The main feature that distinguishes a polyp from simple laryngitis is persistence: hoarseness does not go away within two to three weeks and does not disappear after treatment for a cold. Any prolonged hoarseness requires examination of the larynx.

Loss of smell (anosmia)
Anosmia is a complete loss of smell, hyposmia is a decrease in smell. Sometimes odors are distorted or a person perceives non-existent, often unpleasant odors. The sense of smell is provided by receptors in the upper part of the nasal cavity, from which the signal travels along the olfactory nerves to the brain, and a disorder can occur at any level. The most common causes are viral infections, chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps and allergic rhinitis, less often head trauma, age-related changes and neurological diseases. Loss of the sense of smell reduces the enjoyment of food, affects mood and is dangerous because a person will not be able to smell gas, smoke or spoiled food. In many cases, the sense of smell is restored, especially with timely treatment of the cause and olfactory training.
