Hypertrophy of the nasal turbinates
The turbinates are bony protrusions on the side walls of the nose, covered with a mucous membrane with a rich network of blood vessels. They warm, humidify and purify the inhaled air, and their volume is constantly changing. With hypertrophy, the shells persistently enlarge and stop collapsing, which is why the nose is stuffy almost all the time, breathing comes through the mouth, and sleep is disturbed. Most often this is a consequence of long-term allergic or vasomotor rhinitis, a deviated septum and abuse of vasoconstrictor drops. In the early stages, drug treatment helps; with persistent enlargement, gentle operations through the nose are used, preserving the function of the mucous membrane.

Eustachitis (tubootitis)
Eustachitis, or tubootitis, is a violation of the patency of the auditory (Eustachian) tube, which connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx. Normally, the tube opens briefly during swallowing and yawning and equalizes the pressure in the tympanic cavity with atmospheric pressure. If the mucous membrane of the tube swells due to a runny nose, allergies or enlarged adenoids, air stops flowing into the middle ear, the pressure in it drops, and the eardrum retracts. Hence congestion, hearing loss and the booming sound of one’s own voice. Acute eustachitis usually goes away with a runny nose. If symptoms last more than a few weeks, fluid may accumulate in the middle ear, so prolonged ear congestion should be seen by an ENT doctor.

Ear congestion
Ear congestion is a sensation of pressure, cotton wool or water in the ear, often with decreased hearing and a hollow sound of one's own voice. Most often it is caused by harmless and easily removable reasons: cerumen plug, dysfunction of the auditory tube due to a runny nose, pressure changes on the plane or water getting into the ear canal. However, sudden congestion without pain and runny nose may hide acute sensorineural hearing loss - a lesion of the inner ear, for which treatment is most effective in the first days. Therefore, it is important not to attribute such congestion to a cold and not wait for it to go away on its own. The correct cause is determined by an ENT doctor after examining the ear and testing the hearing, and treatment is selected depending on the source found.

Maxillary sinus cyst
A cyst of the maxillary, or maxillary, sinus is a round formation with a thin wall and liquid contents that grows from the mucous membrane of the sinus. Most often, this is a retention cyst: the duct of the mucous gland is clogged, and the secretion accumulates in a kind of vesicle. Such cysts are very often discovered incidentally on a CT scan or MRI done for another reason, and in most people they do not manifest themselves in any way. A small, asymptomatic cyst is not dangerous, does not develop into a tumor, and usually does not require treatment. Surgery is needed if the cyst is large, blocks the outflow from the sinus, causes repeated sinusitis, pain or difficulty in nasal breathing, and also if its appearance raises doubts among the doctor.

Lump and sore throat
A lump in the throat is a sensation of a foreign body, pressure or soreness in the neck, in which swallowing food and water is usually not impaired. The sensation may intensify with excitement and when swallowing saliva, and, on the contrary, disappear during eating. Most often, it is not caused by tumors, but by completely removable causes: reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus, chronic inflammation of the pharynx, increased tension in the neck muscles, an enlarged thyroid gland, or an anxiety disorder. However, the symptom should not be ignored: if swallowing is difficult, there is pain or weight loss, you should be examined first.

Bleeding nasal septum polyp
A bleeding nasal septum polyp is a benign vascular formation growing in the anterior part of the nasal septum, in an area of dense plexus of small vessels. By structure, this is an overgrown tissue of capillaries, so even a light touch, blowing the nose or dry air causes bleeding. A characteristic feature is that blood comes from the same half of the nose, repeats for weeks and months, and tamponade helps only for a while. A polyp is not a malignant tumor and does not turn into cancer, but it does not disappear on its own. Reliably solving the problem is removing the formation along with the base, after which bleeding usually stops.

Labyrinthitis
Labyrinthitis is an inflammation of the inner ear, that is, the labyrinth in which the organs of hearing and balance are located. Since they are located nearby and are supplied by a common artery, the lesion almost always affects both functions: severe dizziness with nausea occurs and at the same time hearing decreases, and noise in the ear appears. Most often, labyrinthitis becomes a complication of otitis media, when the infection penetrates through the windows of the labyrinth or destroyed bone, less often it is viral or develops after injury. Unlike vestibular neuronitis, hearing is affected and the loss can be permanent, so treatment is started urgently.

Laryngitis in children
Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx, which is most often caused by viruses in children. The peculiarity of the children's larynx is that it is narrow, and the mucous membrane is prone to swelling, so inflammation quickly narrows the lumen of the airways. A characteristic picture appears: a hoarse voice, a rough barking cough and a noisy whistling breath, which intensifies at night and when crying. This condition is called false croup. It frightens parents, but in most cases it is not severe and responds well to treatment. The main thing is to know how to behave in the first minutes, what signs require an immediate call for an ambulance and what absolutely should not be done.

Laryngospasm
Laryngospasm is a sudden involuntary closure of the vocal folds, due to which air stops passing into the lungs. The attack begins abruptly: the person cannot breathe, a noisy whistling sound appears, the face turns red, then turns blue, and severe fear occurs. The spasm usually lasts from several seconds to a minute and most often goes away on its own, but is very difficult to experience. In young children it is associated with a decrease in calcium levels and a lack of vitamin D, in adults it is associated with reflux, irritation of the larynx and anesthesia. Any episode of suffocation requires examination by a doctor and calling 103 for help.

Mastoiditis
Mastoiditis is a purulent inflammation of the mastoid process of the temporal bone, a bony protrusion behind the auricle, inside of which there are air-filled cells. Almost always it becomes a complication of acute purulent otitis media: the infection passes from the tympanic cavity into the cells, the pus does not find a way out, the partitions between the cells are destroyed, and a cavity with pus is formed. Pain and swelling appear behind the ear, the auricle protrudes, and the temperature rises. Due to the proximity of the meninges, facial nerve and venous sinuses, the condition is dangerous, and treatment begins urgently, often in a hospital.
