Sore throat
Sore throat is one of the most common reasons for visiting a doctor. In most cases, it is caused by viruses: with ARVI, the mucous membrane of the pharynx becomes inflamed, soreness and pain appear when swallowing, which disappear in 5–7 days without antibiotics. Bacterial sore throat caused by streptococcus is less common and requires antibiotic treatment prescribed by a doctor after examination. The throat also hurts due to infectious mononucleosis, reflux, dry air, smoking and vocal strain. Dangerous complications include peritonsillar abscess and inflammation of the epiglottis, which can make breathing difficult. Difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva or open your mouth is a reason to immediately call 103, and pain for more than a week is a reason to be examined by an ENT doctor.

Ear pain (otalgia)
Ear pain, or otalgia, can arise from diseases of the ear itself or radiate into it from neighboring organs. The most common ear causes are acute otitis media, especially in children, otitis externa after swimming, furuncle of the ear canal, cerumen plug and barotrauma during flights. If the ear is healthy upon examination, the source of pain is often sore teeth, the temporomandibular joint, inflamed tonsils or the cervical spine, and in older smokers, formations of the pharynx and larynx. Most causes can be treated well, but it is not worth putting medicines into the ear and heating it before examination: this is dangerous if the eardrum is damaged. Pain with swelling behind the ear, high fever or facial asymmetry requires urgent attention.

Pain when swallowing
Pain when swallowing is a common complaint, which in most cases is caused by a common viral inflammation of the pharynx and tonsils. Such pain increases over a day or two, is accompanied by a runny nose, hoarseness and cough, and goes away on its own within a week. Other options are alarming: pain on only one side, the inability to open the mouth and swallow even saliva, a nasal voice, high fever without a runny nose, and pain that lasts more than two weeks. They may hide streptococcal tonsillitis, peritonsillar abscess, epiglottic lesions, foreign body, reflux and, less commonly, tumors. Examination of the pharynx helps to figure it out, and if streptococcus is suspected, a swab from the throat.

Vasomotor and medicinal rhinitis
Vasomotor rhinitis is a non-allergic chronic runny nose, in which the vessels of the nasal mucosa react too strongly to common irritants: cold air, strong odors, smoke, spicy foods, stress. The mucous membrane swells, congestion and watery discharge appear, although there is no infection or allergy. Drug-induced rhinitis is a similar condition that develops with prolonged use of vasoconstrictor drops: the vessels stop constricting on their own, and the nose does not breathe without the next dose. Both conditions are not life-threatening, but they impair sleep, cause snoring, headaches and reduce quality of life. Dependence on drops can be eliminated, and vasomotor rhinitis is successfully controlled with the help of treatment selected by an ENT doctor.

Vestibular migraine
Vestibular migraine is one of the most common causes of recurrent attacks of dizziness in adults, especially women. This is a type of migraine in which the primary sensation is not the headache, but a sensation of spinning, unsteadiness, or swaying. The attack lasts from several minutes to several days and is often accompanied by nausea, intolerance to light and sound, and the head may not hurt at all. Because of this picture, people have been examined for years for neck vessels and “osteochondrosis,” although the diagnosis is made based on the nature of the attacks and the history of migraine. The condition responds well to treatment: identification of provocateurs, sleep patterns and preventive therapy are important.

Vestibular neuronitis
Vestibular neuronitis is an inflammatory lesion of the vestibular nerve in its vestibular part, most often of a viral nature. The brain suddenly stops receiving body position signals from one labyrinth and perceives the difference as continuous rotation. Severe dizziness develops with nausea, vomiting and inability to stand, which lasts from several hours to several days, and instability persists for weeks. The most important feature: the hearing is not affected and there is no noise in the ear. The condition is unpleasant, but benign; the main thing is to exclude a stroke, the symptoms of which may be similar.

Sudden hearing loss
Sudden hearing loss is a sharp decrease in hearing in one, or less often in both, ears, which develops within a few hours or a maximum of three days. Often a person notices a problem in the morning, immediately after waking up: the ear seems to be stuffed with cotton wool, noise appears, surrounding sounds are distorted, and sometimes dizziness occurs. Many people wait for congestion to go away on its own, or try to treat themselves with drops for sulfur plugs, wasting precious time. Meanwhile, this is an emergency condition: the earlier treatment is started, the higher the likelihood of hearing restoration. You need to see an ENT doctor on the same day.

Congenital stridor (laryngomalacia)
Congenital stridor is noisy breathing in an infant, which is most often heard during inspiration and resembles a whistle, squeaking or bubbling. In the vast majority of cases, its cause is laryngomalacia: softness of the cartilage at the entrance to the larynx, due to which, when inhaling, the epiglottis and arytenoid cartilages are pulled inward and partially block the lumen. This is not a developmental defect in the usual sense, but tissue immaturity, which disappears as the child grows. The noise usually appears in the first weeks of life, gets worse with crying, feeding and lying on the back, and disappears by 12–18 months. It is not the sound itself that requires observation, but how the child eats and gains weight.

Discharge from the ear (otorrhea)
Otorrhea is any discharge from the external auditory canal: purulent, mucous, clear or mixed with blood. The symptom itself indicates that somewhere the integrity of the skin or eardrum is compromised, or that there is active inflammation. Most often, the reason is accessible and understandable - otitis externa, purulent otitis media with a ruptured membrane, a foreign body in a child. But there are also dangerous situations: cholesteatoma that destroys bone, a fracture of the base of the skull with leakage of cerebrospinal fluid, malignant otitis externa in people with diabetes. Therefore, if there is discharge from the ear, you should not instill drops and rinse the ear yourself: first you need an examination to see the membrane.

Hypertrophy of the palatine tonsils
Hypertrophy of the palatine tonsils is a persistent increase in their size without signs of active inflammation. Most often occurs in children from three to ten years old, when lymphoid tissue is actively working and growing in response to infections. A slight increase is normal and will decrease on its own over time. It becomes a problem when the tonsils close in the midline and begin to interfere with breathing and swallowing: snoring, sleep apnea, restless sleep, nasal sound, and difficulty eating solid food appear. It is important to distinguish hypertrophy from chronic tonsillitis: their approaches to treatment are different.
