Chronic cough
Chronic cough in adults is a cough that lasts longer than 8 weeks; A cough lasting 3 to 8 weeks is considered subacute, and most often remains after a viral infection. Chronic cough is not a disease, but a symptom, and almost always there is a specific cause. In non-smokers with a normal chest x-ray, the main causes are bronchial asthma, drainage of mucus from the nose due to rhinitis and sinusitis, gastroesophageal reflux, and also taking certain blood pressure medications. For smokers, chronic bronchitis and COPD come first. A long cough interferes with sleep and is exhausting, and sometimes hides tuberculosis or a tumor, so it needs to be examined and not treated at random.

Noise in the ears (tinnitus)
Tinnitus, or tinnitus, is the perception of sound without an external source: ringing, squeaking, hissing, humming or pulsating. This is not a separate disease, but a symptom that occurs very often, especially after 50 years of age and in people who work in noise. In most cases, noise is associated with hearing loss: when the inner ear transmits fewer signals to the brain, the auditory centers seem to increase their own activity. Other causes include cerumen impaction, otitis media, Meniere's disease, taking certain medications, and problems with the temporomandibular joint. Unilateral murmurs, pulsatile murmurs in rhythm with the heart, and murmurs with sudden hearing loss require immediate evaluation. Even when noise cannot be completely eliminated, there are ways to significantly reduce its impact on your life.

Ethmoiditis
Ethmoiditis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the ethmoid labyrinth, a system of small bone cells located between the eye sockets at the root of the nose. This is one of the forms of sinusitis, and most often it develops as a complication of a prolonged runny nose or ARVI, when swelling blocks the narrow outlet openings of the cells. Typical symptoms include pressing pain at the bridge of the nose and the inner corner of the eye, nasal congestion, mucus running down the back of the throat and decreased sense of smell. In young children, the ethmoid sinus is better developed than others, so ethmoiditis is more common and more dangerous in them due to the proximity of the orbit and the cranial cavity.

Juvenile angiofibroma of the nasopharynx
Juvenile angiofibroma of the nasopharynx is a rare benign tumor that occurs almost exclusively in adolescent boys. It consists of dense fibrous tissue and a huge number of vessels, so it bleeds very easily. The tumor does not metastasize, but grows aggressively: it grows into the sinuses, orbit, infratemporal fossa and can approach the base of the skull. A typical combination of complaints is persistent congestion of one half of the nose and repeated heavy nosebleeds. The key rule: if you suspect such a tumor, you cannot do a regular biopsy in a clinic - this risks severe bleeding. The diagnosis is made using contrast-enhanced tomography.

Laryngitis
Laryngitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the larynx, including the vocal folds. The swollen folds become heavier and rougher, they stop closing smoothly and oscillating freely, so the voice shrinks, hoarses, and sometimes disappears completely. In adults, this is more often unpleasant than dangerous, and goes away within a week. In children under 5-6 years of age, the situation is fundamentally different: the lumen of their larynx is narrow, and the loose mucous membrane swells quickly, and the same inflammation can block breathing in a few hours - this condition is called false croup, and it requires immediate action. There is one more detail that almost no one knows about: with a dry voice, almost everyone automatically switches to a whisper, believing that this is how they protect their cords. In fact, whispering puts more strain on the larynx than normal quiet speech, and recovery from it is delayed.

Hearing loss (hearing loss)
Hearing loss is a permanent hearing loss in which a person begins to lose some sound information. The main feature of this condition is that it almost always develops slowly and imperceptibly: the brain gradually completes the missing fragments of speech according to the context, and the person is confident for a long time that he hears normally, it’s just that “everyone has begun to speak unintelligibly.” According to specialist statistics, from the appearance of the first signs to seeking help, on average, seven to ten years pass - and this is the main problem, because some of the opportunities are lost irrevocably over these years. There is also the opposite situation, which is known even less: if hearing loss in one ear suddenly, within hours or a day, this is an emergency condition, and whether the person sees a doctor in the first three days directly determines whether the hearing will return.

Nosebleed
Almost everyone experiences nosebleeds at least once in their life, and in about nine cases out of ten, the source is in the same place - on the anterior lower part of the nasal septum, where small vessels intertwine under a very thin mucous membrane. This zone is located literally one and a half centimeters from the edge of the nostril, so such bleeding can almost always be stopped at home, and without cotton wool, ice or medications. The problem is that the traditional method of help - tilting the head back - not only does not work, but is also harmful: the blood continues to flow, simply flows down the back wall of the throat into the stomach, and the person loses the opportunity to understand whether it has stopped or not. The correct actions are exactly the opposite: lean forward and tightly pinch the soft part of your nose for 10-15 minutes, without letting go to check.

Deviated nasal septum
The nasal septum is a bone-cartilaginous plate that divides the nasal cavity into two halves. Almost no one has a perfectly even air: according to various estimates, one or another deviation is found in 75-90 percent of adults, and most of them breathe perfectly and will never know about it. Hence the main principle that is worth learning before booking an operation: it is not the picture in the photograph that is operated on, but the person’s complaints. The conclusion “deviated nasal septum,” obtained during a routine examination in a person without difficulty breathing, in itself is neither a diagnosis requiring treatment nor an indication for surgical intervention. And vice versa: if the nose really hasn’t been breathing for years, no drops, rinsing or exercises will change the shape of the cartilage - only surgery works here.

Nasal polyps
Nasal polyps are not tumors or growths that appear out of nowhere, but areas of the mucous membrane of the nose and paranasal sinuses that, due to prolonged inflammation, are saturated with fluid, swollen and hang into the nasal cavity like drops or grapes. They are painless, do not bleed and grow slowly, so a person gets used to gradually worsening breathing and consults a doctor late. The most significant and most often ignored symptom is loss of smell: polyps form precisely in the upper parts of the nose, where the olfactory zone is located, and block the access of odorous molecules to it. Another feature that is important to know in advance: polyposis is a chronic inflammatory disease; surgery removes polyps, but does not eliminate the cause, so without subsequent treatment with a hormonal spray they return.

Otitis
Otitis is an inflammation of the ear, one of the most common reasons for visiting an ENT doctor and the most common cause of night crying in a child. This word hides various diseases: otitis externa affects the ear canal, medial otitis affects the cavity behind the eardrum. They are treated differently, and that is why using “ear drops” before a doctor’s examination is a bad idea: if the eardrum is damaged, some of the drops can damage your hearing. You can figure out what kind of otitis media it is by looking into your ear.
