Median and lateral neck cyst
Neck cysts are congenital cavity formations that appear from the remains of embryonic structures that do not disappear during fetal development. The median cyst is located strictly in the center of the neck and is associated with the course of the thyroglossal duct, through which the thyroid gland descends from the root of the tongue. The lateral (branchiogenic) cyst is formed from the remains of the branchial slits and is located on the side, along the edge of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. For a long time, the formation does not bother you and looks like a soft, painless lump. Problems begin with suppuration: the cyst quickly grows, hurts, and can burst into a fistula. Treatment is planned surgical removal.

Sphenoiditis
Sphenoiditis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the sphenoid sinus, located deep at the base of the skull, behind the nasal cavity. Because of this position, the disease manifests itself in an unusual way: instead of the usual pain in the cheeks and forehead, there is a dull pain in the back of the head, the crown of the head, or “in the depths of the head,” which intensifies in the heat and in a stuffy room. Often the only noticeable symptom is mucus running down the back of the throat and an unpleasant odor. The sinus is adjacent to the optic nerves, carotid artery and meninges, so advanced inflammation is dangerous for complications. The diagnosis is reliably confirmed by CT scanning of the sinuses.

Tracheitis
Tracheitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the trachea, the tube connecting the larynx to the bronchi. Most often it is part of a common viral respiratory tract infection, so it is rarely isolated and is usually associated with laryngitis, pharyngitis or bronchitis. The main symptom is a dry hacking cough in attacks, which intensifies at night, with a deep breath, laughter and going out into cold air, and is accompanied by a burning or scratching feeling behind the sternum. At first there is almost no sputum, but after a few days it becomes more abundant and the cough softens. Usually tracheitis goes away in 1–2 weeks, but a lingering cough requires a search for other causes.

Vocal fold nodules
Vocal fold nodules are small, dense thickenings at the edges of the folds that occur due to constant overload of the voice. They are formed at the point of greatest contact between the folds, which is why they are called singers' or screamers' nodes. The folds stop closing completely, and the voice becomes hoarse, dull, quickly gets tired, and by the evening it can almost disappear. Most often, teachers, educators, salespeople, singers, announcers, as well as active children who scream a lot suffer. This is a benign condition, and in most cases it can be cured without surgery: voice mode and classes with a phoniatrist or phonopedist play a key role.

Pharyngitis
Pharyngitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the pharynx, the same back wall that is visible if you open your mouth and say “ah.” This is the most common reason for visiting a doctor with a complaint of a sore throat, and the vast majority of such cases are caused by common respiratory viruses: according to various estimates, in adults, viruses account for about 85-95 percent of acute pharyngitis, in children - about 70 percent. Hence the main practical conclusion that should be learned before starting treatment: an antibiotic for pharyngitis is needed in a minority of cases, and it is prescribed not for the redness of the throat, but for signs of a bacterial, primarily streptococcal infection. The second thing that is important to know: traditional rinses with soda with iodine, strong saline solution and alcohol tinctures do not speed up recovery, but additionally dry out and burn the already inflamed mucous membrane - it is after them that a lingering soreness most often develops, which a person later calls chronic pharyngitis.

Frontit
Frontitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the frontal sinuses, located in the bones above the eyebrows. Most often, it develops as a complication of acute respiratory viral infection: swelling of the mucous membrane blocks the narrow frontonasal canal, mucus stagnates, and pressure and pain appear in the forehead. Most acute frontal sinuses are caused by viruses and disappear in about 10 days with symptomatic treatment; bacterial infections are less common. Chronic frontal sinusitis is associated with a deviated septum, polyps and other structural features of the nose. The frontal sinus borders the orbit and the cranial cavity, so swelling of the eyelid, severe headache or blurred vision due to a runny nose is a reason to immediately consult a doctor.

Nasal boil
Nasal boil is an acute purulent inflammation of the hair follicle and surrounding tissues in the vestibule of the nose or on its wing. The causative agent is usually staphylococcus, which penetrates through microtrauma: after plucking hairs, picking the nose, scratching during a runny nose. Sharp pain, redness and dense swelling appear, and after a few days a purulent core forms. Despite its small size, a boil in this area is dangerous: the veins of the nasolabial triangle are connected to the venous sinuses of the cranial cavity, so squeezing can lead to serious complications. Treatment is prescribed by a doctor; independent autopsy is unacceptable.

Cholesteatoma of the ear
Cholesteatoma is an accumulation of desquamated epithelium and keratin in the middle ear, surrounded by a dense membrane. It is not a tumor, but it behaves aggressively: it gradually increases, puts pressure on surrounding structures and secretes enzymes that dissolve bone. Because of this, the auditory ossicles, the wall of the facial nerve canal and the structures of the inner ear are destroyed. Most often, cholesteatoma is formed with long-term chronic otitis media and persistent disruption of the auditory tube. The main signs are constant discharge from the ear with a putrid odor and a slow decrease in hearing. Treatment is surgical; cholesteatoma cannot be removed with medications.

Snoring
Snoring is a sound that occurs during sleep when the soft tissues of the pharynx vibrate: the soft palate, uvula, walls of the pharynx and the root of the tongue. During sleep, the muscles relax, the airway narrows, and the air passes through with turbulence. Snoring is very common, especially in men, overweight people and after drinking alcohol. Simple snoring itself is harmless to the health of the snorer, but it interferes with the sleep of others. Snoring is dangerous, which is accompanied by pauses in breathing, loud snoring and daytime sleepiness: these are signs of obstructive sleep apnea, which increases the risk of hypertension, arrhythmias, stroke and driving accidents. In children, regular snoring is most often associated with adenoids and tonsils and also requires examination.

Snoring in children
Snoring in a child is a sound that occurs when air has difficulty passing through the narrowed airways and causes vibration of the soft tissues of the throat. Occasional snoring with a runny nose during a cold is normal and goes away with it. Constant snoring should be alarming: most often its cause is enlarged adenoids and palatine tonsils. It is not the sound itself that is dangerous, but the pauses in breathing associated with it during sleep. With apnea, the child’s brain regularly lacks oxygen, sleep becomes disrupted, and behavior, attention, and growth suffer. Therefore, a child who snores almost every night needs to be seen by an ENT doctor.
