Mucormycosis
Mucormycosis is a rare but very aggressive infection caused by molds of the order Mucorales. Their spores are constantly present in the air, soil and spoiled foods and are safe for a healthy person. The disease develops when the body’s defenses are sharply weakened: with decompensated diabetes mellitus and ketoacidosis, blood diseases, after organ transplantation, against the background of long-term use of glucocorticoids or severe infection. Fungi grow into the walls of blood vessels, block blood flow and cause tissue death - most often in the nose, sinuses, eye socket and lungs. The disease develops rapidly, so if suspected, immediate hospitalization is necessary: the outcome directly depends on how early antifungal therapy and surgical treatment are started.

Swallowing difficulty (dysphagia)
Dysphagia is difficulty swallowing food or liquid when food is forced, lingers behind the breastbone, or causes choking. This is always a significant symptom that requires examination: it can be caused by easily removable causes or serious diseases of the esophagus. Doctors divide dysphagia into oropharyngeal, when it is difficult to start a sip, a person coughs and chokes - these are often neurological and ENT causes, and esophageal, when a piece gets stuck a few seconds after taking a sip. Particularly alarming is the increasing difficulty in swallowing solid food along with weight loss: this combination requires endoscopy in the near future.

A child has a runny nose
A runny nose in children is the most common complaint with which people consult a pediatrician. It is based on inflammation of the nasal mucosa, most often viral: swelling and discharge interfere with breathing, disrupt sleep and appetite, especially in infants who cannot breathe through their mouths during feeding. A common runny nose during ARVI goes away in 7–10 days and does not require complex treatment: the main thing is to moisturize the mucous membrane, cleanse the nose and ensure free breathing. It is not the color of the discharge that is alarming, but the duration, one-sidedness, repeated episodes and signs of complications from the ears and sinuses.

Neuralgia of the glossopharyngeal nerve
Neuralgia of the glossopharyngeal nerve is a rare but very painful condition in which short attacks of burning, shooting pain occur in the root of the tongue, tonsil, depth of the pharynx and ear. The attack lasts from a few seconds to two minutes and is triggered by ordinary actions: swallowing, talking, yawning, coughing, eating cold or sour food. Due to the localization of pain, patients spend years treating their throat and teeth before seeing a neurologist. Most often, the cause is irritation of the nerve root by a passing vessel, less often - a tumor or inflammation in the area of the base of the skull. With the right treatment, most people can get rid of their attacks.

Acoustic neuroma
Acoustic neuroma, or vestibular schwannoma, is a benign, slow-growing tumor of the vestibular-cochlear nerve sheath. It develops in the internal auditory canal and gradually extends into the area between the cerebellum and the brain stem. The tumor does not metastasize, but as it grows it compresses neighboring structures, so it is important to identify it in time. The most common first sign is a gradual decrease in hearing in one ear in combination with noise or ringing, less often - dizziness and instability. The unilateral nature of the complaints is fundamentally important: it should be the reason for an MRI, since normal age-related hearing loss is usually symmetrical.

Bad breath (halitosis)
Halitosis is a persistent bad breath that does not go away after brushing your teeth and chewing gum. In the vast majority of cases, the source is located in the oral cavity itself: bacteria break down proteins from food debris, desquamated epithelium and plaque, releasing volatile sulfur compounds - they are what give the characteristic odor. The main reservoirs of these bacteria are the back of the tongue, gum pockets and carious cavities. Less commonly, the cause lies outside the mouth: chronic tonsillitis, sinusitis, diseases of the stomach, lungs, kidneys and liver. A separate situation is the morning smell and the smell after onions or garlic: this is the norm, not a disease.

Hoarseness and loss of voice (dysphonia)
Dysphonia is a voice disorder in which it becomes hoarse, hoarse, weak, quickly gets tired or changes timbre; The complete loss of a sonorous voice is called aphonia. The voice is formed by the vibration of the vocal folds of the larynx, and any inflammation, swelling, formation or loss of mobility changes the sound. Most often, hoarseness occurs during acute laryngitis during an acute respiratory viral infection or after vocal strain and goes away in 1–2 weeks. But hoarseness can also be a sign of nodules, polyps, reflux, vocal cord paresis, or laryngeal cancer, especially in smokers. The main rule: if your voice has not recovered within 3 weeks, you need to have your larynx examined by an ENT doctor.

Osteoma of the frontal and ethmoid sinuses
Osteoma is a benign tumor of bone tissue, which is most often found in the paranasal sinuses, primarily in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses. It grows extremely slowly, over the course of years, and in most people it is discovered by chance when an X-ray or CT scan is done for another reason. A small osteoma does not cause any symptoms and does not require treatment. Problems begin when the tumor blocks the exit from the sinus or extends beyond it. Then a persistent headache appears in the forehead, recurring sinusitis, and when it spreads into the orbit, displacement of the eye and double vision. That is why it is not the find itself that is important, but its size, location and dynamics.

Reinke's edema
Reinke's edema is a persistent accumulation of gelatinous fluid in the superficial layer of the vocal folds, in the so-called Reinke's space. The folds thicken, become loose and heavy, vibrate more slowly, and the voice acquires a characteristic sound: low, rough, “smoky.” The disease is almost always associated with smoking, and additional factors include vocal stress and reflux of gastric contents into the pharynx. Most often, middle-aged women who smoke suffer, in whom the decrease in voice pitch is especially noticeable. The changes affect both folds and, without quitting smoking, progress steadily, up to difficulty breathing.

Otitis in children
Otitis in children is an inflammation of the ear, most often the middle ear, that is, the cavity behind the eardrum. It usually occurs against the background of a runny nose: the child’s auditory tube is short, wide and located almost horizontally, so the infection from the nasopharynx easily rises into the ear, and the mucus stagnates there. This results in sharp pain, increased temperature and decreased hearing. A baby under one year old cannot complain and simply cries, sleeps poorly, refuses to breastfeed, and rubs his ear on the pillow. Most otitises go well, but an examination by an ENT doctor is needed in order to see the purulent process in time and not miss complications.
