How is the initial appointment going?

The doctor asks in detail about the complaints and their duration, then examines all ENT organs - even if only one area is of concern: the ear, throat and nose are anatomically connected, and the cause of pain in the ear is often located in the nasopharynx. If necessary, an endoscopic examination is performed, a smear is taken, or an x-ray of the sinuses is prescribed. The appointment ends with a specific plan: medications, procedures or referral for surgery.

Why do people consult an ENT doctor?

An otorhinolaryngologist deals with diseases of the ear, nose and throat - from acute runny nose to chronic sinusitis, tonsillitis and hearing loss. A significant part of the complaints with which people live for years “as is” - nasal congestion, snoring, constant sore throat, noise in the ear - has a specific cause and is treated.

There is a separate group of emergency conditions: nosebleeds, foreign bodies, acute otitis with severe pain, abscess - help in the first hours is important here.

What is included in the inspection

  • rhinoscopy - examination of the nasal cavity, assessment of the septum and nasal turbinates
  • pharyngoscopy - examination of the pharynx and palatine tonsils
  • laryngoscopy - examination of the larynx and vocal folds
  • otoscopy - examination of the ear canal and eardrum
  • assessment of nasal breathing and, if necessary, hearing

When is an endoscope needed?

A normal examination with a reflector shows only the anterior parts of the nose. An endoscopic examination provides an overview of the posterior sections, sinus anastomoses, nasopharynx and adenoids - that is, precisely those areas where the cause of chronic runny nose, snoring and recurring otitis media in children is most often hidden.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an ENT and an otolaryngologist?+
These are the same specialist: “ENT” is an abbreviation for “laryngo-otorhinologist”, and otorhinolaryngologist is the full name of a doctor who deals with the ear, nose and throat.
Do I need to prepare for the appointment?+
No. It is enough not to use vasoconstrictor drops 2-3 hours before the visit so that the doctor can see the real condition of the nasal mucosa.
Is it possible to come with a child?+
Yes, ENT doctors see children. Endoscopic examination of the nasopharynx in children is the main way to evaluate the adenoids without x-rays.
When do you need to contact urgently?+
For nosebleeds that won't stop, severe ear pain, difficulty breathing, a foreign body in the nose or throat, or a high fever with one-sided sore throat.
