Morton's neuroma
Morton's neuroma is a painful thickening of the common plantar digital nerve, most often between the third and fourth metatarsals. This is not a tumor, but a growth of fibrous tissue around the nerve, which is constantly compressed between the heads of the bones and the ligament. The person describes the sensation of a pebble or crease in the shoe, burning and stabbing sensations in the fingers, and numbness. The pain intensifies in narrow shoes with heels and when walking, subsides if you take off your shoes and massage your foot. Middle-aged women are more often affected. With early treatment, changing shoes, insoles, and offloading the forefoot is usually sufficient; in persistent cases, injections or removal of the nerve are used.

Osteomyelitis
Osteomyelitis is a purulent inflammation of the bone and bone marrow, which is most often caused by bacteria, primarily Staphylococcus aureus. Microbes enter the bone through the bloodstream, through a wound in an open fracture, during surgery, or from a nearby lesion—for example, from a deep foot ulcer in a person with diabetes. Inflammation quickly destroys bone tissue: pus, cavities and areas of dead bone are formed, which are called sequestra. The acute form begins with high fever and severe arching pain, while the chronic form lasts for years with fistulas and exacerbations. Without timely treatment, the infection spreads to the joint and blood, leading to pathological fractures and sepsis, so suspicion of osteomyelitis requires urgent medical attention.

Osteopenia
Osteopenia is a condition in which bone mineral density is below normal, but has not yet reached the level of osteoporosis. This is not a disease in the usual sense, but a signal: the bone is losing strength faster than it is being restored, and the risk of fracture is gradually increasing. Osteopenia is asymptomatic, so it is detected either by densitometry or by chance on an x-ray as a loss of bone tissue. It is most often associated with age, vitamin D and calcium deficiency, hormonal changes after menopause, inactivity and certain medications. The good news is that at this stage, bone loss can be slowed and even partially reversed through nutrition, exercise, and correction of deficiencies.

Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a disease in which bone density decreases and bones become brittle. It is called a “silent epidemic”: it does not hurt and does not give any symptoms for years, and the first manifestation is often a fracture with minimal trauma - a fall from one’s own height or even an awkward movement. A hip fracture is especially dangerous in the elderly: it dramatically changes the quality of life and is associated with high mortality during the first year. In this case, osteoporosis is detected by a simple test and is well treated.

Osteosarcoma
Osteosarcoma is the most common malignant bone tumor that develops from cells that normally form bone tissue. Tumor cells continue to produce immature bone, but they do so chaotically, destroying the normal structure. The disease primarily affects adolescents and young adults during periods of intense skeletal growth, and its favorite sites are areas of bone near the knee joint and the upper part of the humerus. The main difficulty is that the first complaints are nonspecific: aching pain and swelling, which have long been explained as a bruise, sprain or “growing pains.” Pain that does not go away for weeks and gets worse at night should be alarming.

Joint swelling
Joint swelling is a visible increase in its volume, which occurs due to the accumulation of fluid in the joint cavity, thickening of the synovium, or swelling of surrounding tissues. This is not a diagnosis, but a symptom, which may be due to injury, inflammation, metabolic disorder or infection. The key questions that the doctor answers are: one or several joints are swollen, whether there was damage, whether there is redness, heat and temperature. A quickly swollen hot joint with a high temperature is a reason to seek help immediately, because purulent arthritis destroys cartilage in a matter of days. The remaining cases require a planned, but not delayed examination.

Femoral neck fracture
A hip fracture is a serious injury that most often occurs in older people as a result of a normal fall from their own height. The reason for this fragility is osteoporosis, in which the bone loses density long before the fracture and does not bother you at all. The femoral neck has poor blood supply, so without surgery it hardly heals, and forced immobility quickly leads to pneumonia, bedsores and thrombosis. It is these complications, and not the bone itself, that determine the prognosis. Therefore, the modern approach is to operate as early as possible and get the patient back on his feet in the coming days.

Periostitis of the lower leg (tibia stress syndrome)
Periostitis of the lower leg is overuse pain along the inner edge of the tibia, which occurs in runners, dancers, football players and military personnel with a sharp increase in impact load. The leg muscles are attached to the bone through the periosteum; with constant shaking, the area of their attachment is irritated, and the bone itself responds with restructuring. The pain first appears only at the beginning of the workout and goes away during the warm-up, then accompanies the entire run, and in advanced cases it also bothers you when walking. This is an important signal: with continued stress, the process may develop into a stress fracture. The good news is that with timely correction of the load and technique, the condition is completely reversible.

Humeroscapular periarthritis
Humeral periarthritis is a collective name for painful conditions of the soft tissues around the shoulder joint. Most often, this diagnosis hides damage to the rotator cuff tendons and adhesive capsulitis, in which the joint capsule becomes inflamed, thickens and tightens. A person first notices nighttime shoulder pain, then finds that he cannot put his arm behind his back, comb his hair or take off his shirt. The joint itself is not destroyed: the tendons, bursae and capsule are affected. The condition lasts for months, but with proper rehabilitation, hand mobility is restored in most cases.

Flat valgus foot in children
A flatfoot is a condition in which the longitudinal arch is flattened and the heel is deviated outward, causing the foot to roll inward. In children, this is most often a developmental option, and not a disease: until the age of three to five, the arch is not formed in almost everyone, it is covered by a fatty pad, and the ligaments remain soft. As muscles grow, strengthen, and coordination develops, the arch forms independently in most children. It is not flat feet themselves that require treatment, but those cases where there is pain, fatigue, the foot is rigid and does not change shape when rising on the toes, or there are neurological disorders.
