Fainting (syncope)
Fainting, or syncope, is a brief loss of consciousness due to a sudden decrease in blood flow to the brain. The person turns pale, falls and comes to his senses on his own within seconds or a couple of minutes, usually without consequences. The most common is reflex (vasovagal) fainting - from stuffiness, long standing, the sight of blood, pain or fear; it is not dangerous in itself, but can cause injury if it falls. Less commonly, the cause is heart rhythm disturbances, valve defects, or a sharp drop in blood pressure when standing up, and such fainting requires examination. The main task of the doctor is to distinguish a harmless reflex episode from cardiogenic syncope and from an epileptic seizure. Any first fainting spell in an adult should be discussed with a doctor.

Shortness of breath
Shortness of breath is a feeling of lack of air, difficulty or rapid breathing. During intense exercise, it is natural, but if it becomes difficult for a person to climb to a floor that previously did not cause difficulties, or there is not enough air at rest, this is a symptom that requires examination. Most often, shortness of breath is associated with diseases of the lungs and heart: bronchial asthma, COPD, pneumonia, heart failure, coronary heart disease. It can also be caused by anemia, obesity, thyroid disease, anxiety disorders and detraining. Sudden shortness of breath with chest pain may mean a heart attack, pulmonary embolism or pneumothorax - in this case you should immediately call 103.

Pulmonary edema
Pulmonary edema is a condition in which fluid from the vessels leaks into the lung tissue and alveoli, and a person literally cannot breathe. Most often, the cause is cardiogenic: the left side of the heart cannot cope with pumping blood, and the pressure in the vessels of the lungs increases sharply. The attack usually begins at night with a feeling of lack of air, forces you to sit up, is accompanied by bubbling breathing, coughing with foamy, sometimes pinkish sputum, fear and cold sweat. This is a life-threatening emergency: you need to call 103 immediately. Pulmonary edema can also be non-cardiogenic - with severe infections, poisoning, kidney damage and at high altitudes.

Swelling of the legs
Edema of the legs is the accumulation of fluid in the tissues, most often in the area of the legs and feet. The reasons are varied: from completely harmless ones, associated with heat and prolonged standing, to serious diseases of the heart, kidneys and liver. The key question the doctor asks is whether both legs swell or one. Bilateral edema is usually associated with common causes - heart failure, kidney disease, medications, venous insufficiency. Unilateral edema, especially if it occurs quickly and is accompanied by pain, requires urgent exclusion of deep vein thrombosis. That is why, if there is sudden swelling of one leg, you should not wait and treat with ointments.

Patent foramen ovale
A patent foramen ovale is a small opening with a flap valve in the septum between the atria. Before birth, blood flows through it, bypassing the lungs, and after the first breath, the pressure in the chambers of the heart changes, the valve is pressed and the hole usually closes up during the first or second year of life. If fusion does not occur, the window is called open. Most often, this is not a heart defect, but a minor developmental anomaly: there is no noticeable discharge of blood, the heart works normally, the child grows and develops as usual. The finding becomes significant in adults and only in certain situations - for example, with a stroke without an established cause or in divers. The window itself does not require surgery, but an examination by a cardiologist and echocardiography are advisable.

Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia
Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia is an attack of sharply accelerated rhythm with a frequency of approximately 150-220 beats per minute, which begins suddenly, as if a switch was flipped, and just as suddenly stops. The impulse circulates in a vicious circle in the atria or in the area of the atrioventricular node. An attack can last from a few seconds to several hours and is accompanied by palpitations, weakness, lack of air, dizziness, and sometimes the urge to urinate. For most people, the condition is not life-threatening, but it noticeably spoils its quality and is frightening. It is important to register the attack on an ECG: first aid and the choice of treatment, up to radical elimination of the arrhythmia, depend on the exact type of tachycardia.

Primary hyperaldosteronism (Conn's syndrome)
Primary hyperaldosteronism is a condition in which the adrenal glands produce too much aldosterone, regardless of the body's needs. This hormone causes the kidneys to retain sodium and water and excrete potassium, so blood pressure rises and potassium levels in the blood decrease. This was long thought to be rare, but it is now known that it is not uncommon among people with difficult-to-control hypertension. It is important to distinguish it from ordinary hypertension: with unilateral damage to the adrenal gland, surgery can relieve a person of high blood pressure, and with bilateral damage, a special group of drugs helps. In addition, excess aldosterone damages the heart and kidneys more than just high blood pressure.

High blood pressure during pregnancy
Gestational hypertension - increased blood pressure up to 140/90 mmHg. Art. and higher, first occurring after the 20th week of pregnancy, without protein in the urine and signs of organ damage. It is distinguished from chronic hypertension, which was present before pregnancy or detected before 20 weeks. The reasons are related to changes in the blood vessels and the functioning of the placenta. Gestational hypertension often occurs without complaints, but in some women it develops into preeclampsia, a dangerous condition for mother and child. Therefore, if you have high blood pressure, you need regular monitoring at home, urine tests and observation by an obstetrician-gynecologist. After birth, blood pressure usually returns to normal within 12 weeks.

Preeclampsia (preeclampsia)
Preeclampsia is a complication of pregnancy, in which after the 20th week blood pressure rises to 140/90 or higher and protein appears in the urine or signs of damage to other organs: kidneys, liver, brain, coagulation system. It is based on a violation of the formation of blood vessels in the placenta, which causes the vessels of the entire mother’s body and the child’s nutrition to suffer. Preeclampsia can be almost asymptomatic for a long time, and then quickly worsen to eclampsia with convulsions, HELLP syndrome, placental abruption. This is why regular blood pressure measurements and urine tests at every visit are so important. Preeclampsia can only be cured by the birth of a child and placenta, and doctors select a safe moment for this.

Mitral valve prolapse
Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is the bowing of one or both valve leaflets between the left atrium and the left ventricle toward the atrium during heart contraction. More often it is associated with congenital weakness of the connective tissue of the valves and chords. In most cases, the prolapse is small, does not interfere with the functioning of the valve and does not require treatment: the person lives a normal life, and the finding is discovered by chance on an ultrasound of the heart. It is not so much the deflection itself that is important, but the severity of the reverse flow of blood - mitral regurgitation. With significant regurgitation, the chambers of the heart enlarge over time, shortness of breath and rhythm disturbances appear, and surgery may be necessary. Therefore, periodic monitoring by a cardiologist and repeated echocardiography are recommended for people with MVP.
