Cracked heels
Cracked heels are tears in the thickened and dry skin in the heel area. First, the skin becomes rough and yellow, a hard rim appears along the edge of the heel, then under load it cracks. Shallow cracks cause cosmetic discomfort, while deep cracks hurt when walking, bleed and become entry points for infection. Most often, the reasons are domestic: open shoes, walking barefoot, dry hot climate, excess weight, long standing and insufficient care. However, cracks can be associated with foot fungus, diabetes, hypothyroidism, psoriasis and eczema. With proper care, the skin recovers within a few weeks, and people with diabetes need especially careful monitoring of their feet.

Trophic ulcer of the leg
A trophic ulcer is a skin defect that does not heal for more than six weeks because tissue nutrition is impaired. This is not an independent disease, but a complication: most often it is caused by chronic venous insufficiency, less often by atherosclerosis of the arteries of the legs, diabetes mellitus, or a combination of both. Due to stagnation of blood and oxygen starvation, the skin thins, darkens, becomes dense, and a minimal injury turns into a wound that does not close for months. The ulcer hurts, gets wet, easily becomes infected and significantly reduces the quality of life. Healing is almost always possible, but only if the cause is eliminated: dressings without treating the underlying disease give only a temporary result.

Erythema nodosum
Erythema nodosum is an inflammation of the subcutaneous fatty tissue, which manifests itself as painful red nodules, most often on the front surface of the legs. The nodes are dense, hot to the touch, and difficult to clearly define with your fingers; they never open or fester, but after one or two weeks they change color, like a bruise, and gradually dissolve. This is not an independent disease, but the body’s reaction to an infection, medication or systemic disease, so the doctor’s main task is to find the trigger factor. Often this is a previous streptococcal infection, but tuberculosis and sarcoidosis must be excluded.

Cellulitis
Cellulitis is an acute purulent inflammation of fatty tissue, which has no clear boundaries and spreads freely throughout the tissues. Unlike an abscess, where pus is enclosed in a capsule, here it permeates the fiber and moves further along natural spaces: along the vessels, muscles and tendons. The cause is often staphylococci and streptococci that enter through a wound, abrasion, injection, sore tooth or from a nearby purulent focus. Cellulitis grows quickly, causes high fever and can lead to sepsis. This is a surgical emergency: treatment is opening and drainage; antibiotics are necessary but not sufficient on their own.

Folliculitis
Folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicle, that is, the sac from which hair grows. Externally, it is a small abscess or red tubercle, in the center of which a hair is visible. Most often, the cause is staphylococcus that enters the follicle after shaving, hair removal, friction with clothing, or severe sweating. There are other options: fungal folliculitis on the back and chest in young people, inflammation after swimming in a poorly treated pool or Jacuzzi. Superficial forms disappear in a few days, deep ones can turn into a boil and leave a scar, so a persistent rash should be shown to a dermatologist.

Follicular keratosis (“goose bumps”)
Keratosis pilaris is a very common skin condition in which horny plugs accumulate at the openings of hair follicles. The skin becomes rough, covered with small dense nodules of flesh-colored, reddish or brownish color - hence the common name “goose bumps”. Typical places are the outer surface of the shoulders, the front surface of the thighs, buttocks, and less often the cheeks of children. This is not an infection, not an allergy, or a consequence of poor hygiene; the condition is harmless, not contagious, and usually improves with age. It cannot be completely removed, but proper daily care noticeably softens the skin.

Photodermatitis (sun allergy)
Photodermatitis, which is commonly called sun allergy, is an inflammation of the skin in response to ultraviolet radiation. There is no real allergy to sunlight: the reaction develops either to the skin’s own proteins modified by ultraviolet radiation, or to substances that get on the skin or are taken orally, which become irritating under the rays. The typical picture is itching, redness and a small rash on exposed areas a few hours after exposure to the sun, often in spring and early summer. The condition is not dangerous, but tends to recur every season. A doctor will help you figure it out: it is important to rule out drug reactions and diseases that also worsen in the sun.

Skin photoaging
Photoaging is skin changes caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation, and not just by the passage of time. The rays damage collagen and elastin fibers, disrupt the functioning of pigment cells and blood vessels, and accumulate mutations in skin cells. As a result, in open areas - the face, neck, décolleté, back of the hands - age spots, spider veins, dryness, rough texture and deep wrinkles appear, which are not present in areas covered by clothing. In hot sunny climates this is especially noticeable. An important aspect of the issue is not only aesthetics: the same ultraviolet damage underlies precancerous changes and skin cancer.

Nasal boil
Nasal boil is an acute purulent inflammation of the hair follicle and surrounding tissues in the vestibule of the nose or on its wing. The causative agent is usually staphylococcus, which penetrates through microtrauma: after plucking hairs, picking the nose, scratching during a runny nose. Sharp pain, redness and dense swelling appear, and after a few days a purulent core forms. Despite its small size, a boil in this area is dangerous: the veins of the nasolabial triangle are connected to the venous sinuses of the cranial cavity, so squeezing can lead to serious complications. Treatment is prescribed by a doctor; independent autopsy is unacceptable.

Cheilitis and seizures
Cheilitis is an inflammation of the lips and surrounding skin, and seizures (angular cheilitis) are a special case of it affecting the corners of the mouth. The red border of the lips lacks a full protective layer and has almost no sebaceous glands, so it easily dries out, cracks and becomes inflamed. The reasons are varied: cold and wind, the habit of licking and biting lips, allergies to toothpaste or lipstick, fungal and bacterial infections in the corners of the mouth, deficiency of iron and B vitamins, malocclusion and old dentures, due to which saliva accumulates in the folds. Treatment is effective only if the cause is found, otherwise the cracks return.
