Cold allergy
Cold allergy, or more correctly cold urticaria, is a skin reaction to cooling, in which itchy blisters and swelling appear in exposed areas. The classic name is not entirely accurate: there is no true allergen here, the mast cells of the skin release histamine in response to a physical stimulus - cold air, water, wind, cold objects and drinks. Young people are most often affected, and in most cases the cause cannot be found. Less commonly, urticaria develops after infections or against the background of blood diseases. The main danger is not the rash, but the general reaction when immersed in cold water, so such people should not swim alone.

Blackheads (comedones)
Comedones are clogged hair follicles, the earliest form of acne. Sebum and dead cells accumulate inside; if the cork is open outward, its surface darkens from oxidation and pigment - a black dot is obtained. If the follicle is closed, a whitish tubercle forms under the skin, a closed comedon. The reason is not dirt or poor washing: the black color has nothing to do with dirt. The main role is played by increased sebum production, impaired exfoliation at the mouth of the follicle, hormonal fluctuations and heredity. Comedones are not dangerous, but without proper care they turn into inflammatory elements and leave marks, so it is important to act regularly and gently.

Eczema
Eczema is a chronic inflammation of the skin in which its protective barrier is disrupted: the stratum corneum allows moisture to pass out, and irritants and microbes to pass in. Hence everything else: dryness, redness, blisters, weeping, crusts and painful itching, which intensifies in the evening. Eczema is not contagious, it cannot be caught through a handshake, a towel or shared utensils, and this is the first thing to say to a person who is embarrassed to extend a hand to a colleague. The second thing that is important to understand right away: the main treatment for eczema is not pills or “cleansing the body,” but daily restoration of the skin barrier with emollients, which are needed many times more than is usually applied. And third: the fear of hormonal ointments, because of which people suffer exacerbations for years, is based on the experience of uncontrolled use of strong drugs on the face, and not on how the doctor prescribes these drugs.

Erythrasma
Erythrasma is a superficial bacterial infection of skin folds caused by corynebacteria, which normally live on the skin and become active when exposed to constant moisture and friction. Clearly defined reddish-brown spots with fine pityriasis-like peeling appear on the skin. Favorite places are the groin and inner thighs, armpits, the crease under the breasts, the spaces between the toes. There is usually no itching or it is mild, so a person does not pay attention to the changes for a long time. Erythrasma is regularly confused with fungal infections, although it is not a fungus, and their treatment is different. The disease is especially common in people with diabetes and overweight.

Scabies
Scabies is a contagious skin disease caused by a microscopic mite that burrows through the stratum corneum. The main thing you need to hear at the very beginning: scabies has nothing to do with uncleanliness. The mite does not live in dirt and does not reproduce in places where the floor is rarely washed; it is transmitted from person to person through close skin-to-skin contact for a sufficiently long time. It affects children from wealthy families, doctors, students, elderly people in hospitals, and there is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of: it is an infection, and not a verdict on how a person lives. Three things are practically important: the itching intensifies at night, everyone living together should be treated at the same time, even those who are not itching yet, and the itching after successful treatment can persist for another two to four weeks - this does not mean that the treatment did not work.

Warts and papillomas
Warts are not “growths from toads” and not a sign of impaired metabolism, but a manifestation of a viral infection: they are caused by the human papillomavirus, abbreviated as HPV. The virus penetrates the cells of the lowest layer of the epidermis through microcracks and forces them to rapidly divide - this is how a dense outgrowth of keratinized tissue is formed. This has two practical consequences. First: a wart is contagious, it can spread to other areas of your own skin and be transmitted to other people, so you really shouldn’t pick it off. Second: over time, in many cases the immune system copes on its own, and some warts disappear without any treatment - but you have to wait for this for months, and sometimes years. The most dangerous thing people do is try to cut off, burn off with acid or tie a thread on a growth at home, without even making sure that it is a wart at all.

Molluscum contagiosum
Molluscum contagiosum is a viral skin infection in which small, dense, flesh-colored or pearl-colored nodules appear with a characteristic depression in the center. The name has nothing to do with real mollusks: it was named so for the appearance of the contents of the nodule. Mostly children of preschool and primary school age, as well as adults with weakened immune systems, are affected; In adults, nodules in the groin area are often the result of transmission through sexual contact. The key feature that determines all tactics: in a healthy child, the molluscum goes away on its own and without a trace, but not in a week - it usually takes from six months to a year and a half, and sometimes more. Therefore, the main question at the appointment is not “how to treat,” but “is it worth intervening at all in this particular case.”

Demodicosis
Demodicosis is a skin disease associated with excessive reproduction of the microscopic demodex mite, which lives in the mouths of hair follicles and in the ducts of the sebaceous glands. And here’s the main thing that changes the idea of the disease: almost all adults have this mite, and its presence in itself is absolutely normal. It is part of the normal microflora of the skin, like many bacteria. The disease is not considered to be the fact of detection of a tick, but its excessive reproduction along with an inflammatory reaction of the skin. Hence two typical mistakes: some people, in a panic, are treated for months after they “found demodex” in a scraping, although the amount was within the normal range; others have been treating their faces for mites for years, while the real problem is rosacea, and without its treatment there will be no result.

Vitiligo
Vitiligo is a disease in which areas of the skin appear that are completely devoid of pigment. The reason is the death of melanocytes - cells that produce melanin; It is based on an autoimmune process. Vitiligo is not contagious, does not hurt and does not threaten health physically, but it seriously affects the quality of life. For a long time it was considered incurable; Today there are methods that make it possible to achieve pigment restoration in a significant proportion of patients, especially with early treatment.

Rosacea
Rosacea is a chronic facial skin disease in which blood vessels dilate persistently and inflammation develops. It all starts with hot flashes: the face turns red from heat, spicy food, alcohol or excitement, and the redness first goes away and then stops. Later, spider veins, papules and pustules appear, because of which rosacea is often mistaken for acne and treated incorrectly. The difference is fundamental: with rosacea there are no comedones, but there is pronounced skin sensitivity, and aggressive acne products only worsen the condition.
