How is it different from simple application?

The difference is precisely in the work of the dental technician: ceramics are applied in several layers of different transparency and saturation, which gives a vibrant, rather than “flat” color. This option is chosen for the smile zone and when prosthetizing a single tooth among your own - when the crown should be indistinguishable from its neighbors.

When is a crown needed?

A crown is a permanent prosthesis that completely covers the tooth and takes on the chewing load. It is placed when there is little natural tooth tissue left and the filling can no longer hold the load.

The main indications: destruction of the coronal part by more than half, a tooth after canal treatment, an enamel crack, severe abrasion, as well as abutment teeth for a bridge.

What are crowns made of?

  • metal ceramics - a metal frame with ceramic lining, a reliable and versatile option
  • metal-free ceramics (press ceramics) – maximum aesthetics for anterior teeth
  • zirconium dioxide – high strength and natural appearance, also suitable for chewing teeth
  • solid metal - the most durable and inexpensive option for a chewing band

How is prosthetics performed?

At the first visit, the tooth is ground down for the future crown, impressions are taken and a temporary crown is placed - it protects the ground tooth and preserves aesthetics. The dental technician then creates the design from an impression or digital scan.

At the second visit, the crown is tried on: the marginal fit, contact with adjacent teeth and closure are checked. If everything is correct, the crown is fixed with permanent cement.

How long does a crown last?

The average service life is from 7 to 15 years or more. It depends on hygiene, the condition of the supporting tooth and load distribution. The main reason for replacement is not the breakage of the crown itself, but caries or inflammation underneath it, so regular examinations are important.

Frequently asked questions

Is it painful to grind down a tooth for a crown?+
No, the preparation is performed under local anesthesia. After grinding, a living tooth may react to cold for a day or two - this is normal.
How long does crown prosthetics take?+
Typically 7-14 days between visits: this is how long the dental laboratory needs. At this time, a temporary crown is placed.
Is it necessary to remove the nerve before the crown?+
Not necessarily. If the tooth is alive, healthy and slightly damaged, its depulpation is not required - a living tooth lasts longer.
Which crown to choose for a chewing tooth?+
Zirconium dioxide and metal ceramics are optimal: they can withstand high loads. Pure ceramics are used less frequently on posterior teeth due to the risk of chipping.
