How is the operation performed?
Through an incision in the back of the ear, the surgeon gains access to the cartilage, thins it and creates a fold of the antihelix with non-absorbable sutures, reducing the conchal cup if necessary. The ear acquires a normal fit angle. The operation is performed on one side if the asymmetry is one-sided; For bilateral protruding ears, both sides are operated on at the same time to achieve symmetry. For adults, local anesthesia is sufficient.
What does otoplasty correct?
The most common reason for treatment is protruding ears: the angle between the auricle and the head is increased, and the natural fold of the antihelix is underdeveloped. This is not a disease, but in children it often becomes a reason for ridicule, and in adults it is a source of persistent discomfort.
In addition to protruding ears, deformities of the auricle after injuries, ruptures and stretched holes of the lobe, and congenital shape features are surgically corrected.
When is the best time to operate?
The auricle reaches almost adult size by 6–7 years, so otoplasty is usually performed on children at this age, before starting school, to avoid psychological trauma. There are no restrictions from above: the operation is performed even in adulthood.
Recovery
In the first days, swelling and pain are felt, it is important to constantly wear a fixing bandage - it is this that holds the new position of the cartilage while the scar is formed. Violation of the dressing regime is the main reason for the partial return of the deformity.
