Remove manifestations and continue to observe

Condylomas are a visible manifestation of human papillomavirus infection. They are removed using the radio wave method, electrocoagulation or laser under local anesthesia: they are injured, bleed, grow and are transmitted to the partner. It is important to understand: removal removes the manifestations, but not the virus itself - it remains in the body, and in some women the formations reappear. Therefore, after the procedure, HPV testing with determination of oncogenic types, cytology, colposcopy and examination of the partner are required. It is the presence of oncogenic HPV types that determines the mode of further observation.

Cervical pathology: why it is important to treat

Changes in the cervix are asymptomatic for a long time. Moreover, this is where one of the few types of cancer develops that can be completely prevented, provided that precancerous conditions are detected and treated in a timely manner.

The human papillomavirus plays a key role: oncogenic types of HPV cause dysplasia, which, if left untreated, can turn into cancer over the years. Therefore, the modern approach is based on the combination of “cytology + HPV test + colposcopy”, and treatment is prescribed according to the results, and not “by eye”.

Key interventions

  • coagulation - destruction of the superficial pathological area
  • conization - excision of a cone-shaped section of the neck with capture of the canal
  • extended conization - larger volume when the process spreads into the canal
  • removal of condylomas and papillomas with HPV infection

Histology is required

During conization, the removed tissue is necessarily sent for histological examination. It shows the true extent of the changes - often more pronounced than according to the biopsy - and confirms that the pathological area has been removed within healthy tissue. Further surveillance tactics depend on this.

Frequently asked questions

Does conization affect the ability to give birth?+
With a standard volume - usually not. With repeated or extensive conizations, shortening of the cervix is possible, which is taken into account when managing pregnancy.
Is it painful to do conization?+
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes 15–30 minutes. There may be a pulling sensation in the lower abdomen, as during menstruation.
When is the best time to intervene?+
In the first phase of the cycle, immediately after the end of menstruation, this way the tissues heal better until the next cycle.
What not to do after?+
For 3–4 weeks, sexual activity, tampons, swimming pool, bathhouse, sauna and heavy lifting are excluded.
