Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Post-traumatic stress disorder develops after an event that threatens life or safety: an accident, violence, combat, natural disaster, the sudden loss of a loved one. Its essence is that the memory is not embedded in the past, but continues to be experienced as happening now: it returns in flashbacks and nightmares, forces one to avoid everything that reminds of what happened, and keeps the nervous system in constant readiness for danger. In the first weeks after injury, such reactions are natural and gradually subside for most people. A disorder is said to occur when symptoms persist for more than a month and interfere with life. PTSD is treatable, and the sooner help is started, the better the result.

Psychosis
Psychosis is a condition in which the connection with reality is disrupted: delusions, hallucinations, confusion and strange behavior appear. The person may hear voices that are not there, become convinced of surveillance or a conspiracy, speak incoherently, or experience intense fear. The key feature is the absence of criticism: he himself perceives what is happening as reality, and attempts to convince others cause distrust. Psychosis is not a diagnosis, but a syndrome: it occurs in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, but also in severe infections, brain tumors, poisoning, drug use, alcohol withdrawal, and in the elderly with delirium. Early treatment markedly improves outcome.

Psychosomatic (somatoform) disorders
Somatoform, or psychosomatic, disorders are conditions in which a person experiences real bodily symptoms, but testing does not find an illness that explains their severity. This is not pretense or fiction: pain, palpitations, dizziness and heaviness in the body are fully felt. The mechanism is related to how the nervous system processes signals from organs: the sensitivity threshold decreases, ordinary bodily sensations intensify and begin to be perceived as a threat. Anxiety increases the symptom, the symptom increases the anxiety. Many patients go from doctor to doctor for years and repeat examinations, although effective help exists and is based on psychotherapy and restoration of normal life.

Adjustment disorder
Adaptation disorder is a pronounced and prolonged reaction to a specific life event: dismissal, divorce, moving, serious illness, loss, serious changes in the family. A person understands the cause of his condition, but cannot return to his usual life: anxiety, depression, irritability and sleep disturbances interfere with work, study and communication. Symptoms usually appear within a month of the event and gradually decrease as the situation resolves or the person adjusts. This is not a weakness of character or a whim, but a recognized condition that lends itself well to psychological help. It is worth contacting when experiences disrupt daily life.

Asperger's syndrome
Asperger's syndrome is a variant of autism spectrum disorder in which intelligence and speech develop on time, and difficulties relate to communication, understanding other people's emotions and behavioral flexibility. Such a child speaks early and competently, knows a lot of facts about his favorite topic, but has difficulty making friends, does not read jokes and hints, and has a hard time with changes in routine. In modern classifications, this term is combined with the general concept of autism spectrum disorder, but it is still widely used. This is not a disease that can be “treated”, but a feature of development: with timely support, a person successfully studies, works and starts a family.

Somnambulism (sleepwalking)
Somnambulism, or sleepwalking, is a disorder of awakening from deep slow-wave sleep, when the brain partially wakes up and turns on motor programs, but the consciousness remains asleep. A person sits up in bed, gets up, walks around the room, can open doors and rearrange things, but his eyes are blank, his speech is incoherent, and it is difficult to wake him up. The episode lasts from a few seconds to several minutes and is almost always forgotten. Most often, sleepwalking occurs in children 4–12 years old and goes away on its own with age. The main danger is not the disorder itself, but the trauma during the episode, so the main focus is on the safety of the bedroom.

Vascular dementia
Vascular dementia is a permanent decline in memory, thinking and ability to cope with daily activities caused by impaired blood supply to the brain. The cause may be a stroke, many small “silent” cerebral infarctions, or slow damage to deep small vessels due to long-term hypertension and diabetes. Unlike Alzheimer's disease, deterioration often occurs in stages: after the next vascular event, the condition drops sharply, then persists for some time. Attention, pace of thinking, planning and gait suffer early, but memory can remain relatively intact for a long time. It is the second most common cause of dementia and can be slowed by getting your blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol under control.

Social anxiety (social phobia)
Social anxiety, or social phobia, is a persistent fear of situations in which a person can be evaluated: meeting someone, speaking, talking with a manager, making a call, eating in public. Fear is accompanied by bodily reactions: the face turns red, the voice trembles, the heart pounds, palms sweat, thoughts become confused. A person understands that anxiety is excessive, but cannot stop it, so he begins to avoid such situations - his social circle narrows, his studies, work and personal life suffer. Social phobia differs from ordinary shyness in the strength of fear and in the fact that it really limits life. This is not a character trait or a weakness: the disorder is well studied and responds well to psychotherapy, and in case of severe manifestations, to the help of a psychiatrist.

Substance abuse (inhalation of volatile substances)
Substance abuse is the abuse of volatile household chemicals: glue, solvents, gasoline, the contents of gas cans and aerosols. Vapors quickly pass from the lungs into the blood and brain, causing a short-term state of intoxication with euphoria, dizziness and distorted perception. Teenagers suffer more often because the substances are accessible and cheap. The danger is that it is impossible to predict the body's reaction: death from cardiac arrhythmia or suffocation can occur even with the first episode. With regular inhalation, the brain, liver, kidneys and bone marrow are irreversibly damaged, and intelligence is reduced. The sooner the family and specialists get involved, the higher the chance of stopping the process.

Trichotillomania
Trichotillomania is a disorder in which a person periodically pulls out his own hair: on the head, eyebrows, eyelashes, and less often on other parts of the body. This is not a whim or a sign of weak will: pulling out brings short-term relief from internal tension, and then a feeling of shame and attempts to hide bald spots. The disorder is classified as a group of repetitive behaviors directed at one's own body and is considered alongside obsessive-compulsive disorder. It most often begins in adolescence, and is much more common in girls and women. Hair usually grows back if you can stop pulling it out, and the main method of help is psychotherapy, not hair growth products.
