Frontotemporal dementia (Pick's disease)
Frontotemporal dementia is a group of diseases in which nerve cells in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain gradually die. Unlike Alzheimer's disease, it does not begin with forgetfulness, but with changes in personality, behavior or speech, and often at a relatively young age - between 45 and 65 years. A person may become tactless, indifferent to loved ones, impulsive, begin to overeat sweets or commit inappropriate acts without fully realizing the changes. With the speech version, words and understanding of their meaning gradually disappear. Because of this pattern, diagnosis is often delayed and behavior is often considered a character or mental disorder.

Drug addiction
Drug addiction is a chronic brain disease in which the use of a psychoactive substance becomes uncontrollable and continues despite obvious harm. Key features include severe cravings, loss of control over quantity and frequency, increased tolerance, withdrawal upon cessation, and repression of former interests. This is not a matter of weak will: substances rearrange the brain's reward system, and without help it is rarely possible to break the cycle. Addiction develops gradually, often starting with occasional social use. The condition is treatable, and the sooner a person gets to a narcologist, the higher the chance of long-term remission and restoration of relationships, work and health.

Neuroses (neurotic disorders)
Neurosis is the traditional name for a group of disorders that arise in response to prolonged stress or internal conflict and are manifested by anxiety, irritability, fatigue, sleep disturbances and a variety of bodily complaints. Their main feature is that criticism of one’s condition is preserved: the person understands that something is wrong with him and wants to return to his previous life. In modern classifications, instead of the general word neurosis, more precise diagnoses are used: anxiety disorder, panic disorder, somatoform disorder, adaptation disorder. This is important because treatment depends on the specific diagnosis, and in most cases it is successful for neurotic disorders.

Anorexia nervosa
Anorexia nervosa is a severe eating disorder in which a person deliberately restricts food intake, loses weight, and experiences an intense fear of gaining weight even when the weight has already been significantly reduced. The perception of one's own body is distorted: a person sees himself as full with severe exhaustion. The disorder most often begins in adolescence and young adulthood and is disguised as a healthy lifestyle: first, sweets are excluded, then entire food groups, and exhausting workouts appear. Anorexia nervosa is dangerous not only psychologically: it disrupts the functioning of the heart, bones, and hormonal systems and is one of the disorders with the highest risk of fatal complications. Early treatment fundamentally changes the outcome.

Bulimia nervosa
Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder in which attacks of uncontrolled overeating alternate with attempts to “correct” what was eaten: induce vomiting, take laxatives or diuretics, grueling exercise, severe fasting. Self-esteem depends almost entirely on weight and body shape. The weight more often remains normal, so others do not notice anything for a long time, and the person hides what is happening and feels shame. The danger of bulimia is not in extra pounds, but in the consequences of purging: loss of potassium, heart rhythm disturbances, destruction of tooth enamel, damage to the esophagus. This is a treatable disorder, and the sooner help is started, the better the outcome.

Nervous tics and Tourette's syndrome
Tics are sudden, rapid, repetitive movements or sounds that a person makes involuntarily: blinking, shoulder twitching, grimacing, coughing, grunting. Before a tic, there is often an unpleasant sensation that goes away after movement, and the tic can be controlled for a short time. Tics are very common in school-age children, especially boys, and in most cases go away on their own within a few months. If motor and at least one vocal tic persist for more than a year, they speak of Tourette's syndrome. Tics are not associated with poor parenting and are not a sign of declining intelligence. They intensify with excitement and fatigue. Treatment is needed if tics interfere with learning, socializing, or cause pain.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a condition in which intrusive thoughts and images arise in the head, causing severe anxiety, and the person tries to reduce it through repetitive actions or mental rituals. Key feature: obsessions are perceived as alien and unwanted, a person understands their absurdity, but cannot stop. The ritual brings relief only for a short time, and then the anxiety returns stronger, and the circle closes. Over time, checking and washing hands begins to take hours, interfering with work and relationships. OCD is well studied and treatable: a combination of special psychotherapy and medications helps most patients.

Acute reaction to stress (nervous breakdown)
Acute stress reaction is a short-term disorder that develops in the first minutes and hours after an exceptionally difficult event: an accident, an attack, news of the death of a loved one, a natural disaster. A person may look stunned and inhibited, not answer questions, or, on the contrary, may rush around, scream, and find no place for himself. Perception is often disrupted: what is happening seems unreal, and some events are not remembered later. This is not a mental illness, but an understandable response of the psyche to overload, and in most cases the condition goes away within a few hours or days. The main thing during this period is safety, presence nearby and calm support.

Borderline personality disorder
Borderline personality disorder is a persistent way of reacting in which emotions change quickly and strongly, relationships become unstable, and behavior becomes impulsive. A person is acutely afraid of being abandoned, idealizes loved ones and suddenly becomes disappointed in them, feels inner emptiness and does not always understand who he is and what he wants. Against the background of strong feelings, self-harm and suicidal thoughts are possible. This is not “bad character” or manipulation: this is how dysregulation of emotions works, formed through a combination of innate sensitivity and traumatic experience. The disorder responds well to special psychotherapy, and over time the severity of manifestations noticeably decreases.

Postpartum depression
Postpartum depression is a depressive disorder that develops during the first weeks and months after childbirth. This is not a weakness of character or “bad motherhood,” but a disease associated with sudden hormonal changes, lack of sleep, stress and psychological factors. The woman experiences persistent melancholy, anxiety, guilt, is not happy about the child, loses strength and interest in life. Unlike short-term “baby blues,” symptoms last longer than two weeks and interfere with caring for yourself and your baby. Without treatment, depression can linger and affect relationships with your child and family. Postpartum depression is well treated with psychotherapy and medications compatible with feeding. If your child is thinking about suicide or harming himself, he needs immediate help.
