Dementia (senile dementia)
Dementia is a permanent decline in memory, thinking and other cognitive functions, due to which a person gradually loses the ability to cope with everyday activities. This is not a natural part of aging: forgetfulness in the elderly is normal, but with dementia, impairments increase and interfere with living independently. The most common cause is Alzheimer's disease, followed by vascular dementia after strokes and chronic cerebral ischemia, dementia with Lewy bodies and frontotemporal form. Some dementia-like conditions are reversible: vitamin B12 deficiency, decreased thyroid function, depression and medication side effects. Therefore, early screening makes practical sense.

Dementia with Lewy bodies
Dementia with Lewy bodies is one of the most common forms of dementia after Alzheimer's disease. Protein inclusions accumulate in nerve cells, which disrupt the functioning of the cortex and subcortical structures. It is distinguished by a peculiar set of symptoms: pronounced fluctuations in clarity of consciousness and attention during the day, repeated detailed visual hallucinations, slowness and stiffness of movements, as well as restless sleep with screams and active movements long before the onset of forgetfulness. A very important feature is the extremely high sensitivity to some neuroleptics, which can cause a sharp deterioration in such patients. Therefore, the correct diagnosis directly affects the safety of treatment.

Depersonalization and derealization
Depersonalization is a feeling of alienation from oneself: one’s own thoughts, emotions, voice and body are perceived as alien or automatic, as if a person is watching himself from the outside. Derealization is a similar feeling, but turned outward: the world seems flat, artificial, distant, as if behind glass or in fog. These states are almost always accompanied by the fear of going crazy, although they have nothing to do with psychosis: criticism is completely preserved, and the person understands that this is just a feeling. Many people experience short episodes when they are very tired or anxious. If the condition persists for weeks and interferes with life, you need the help of a specialist.

Dysmorphophobia (dysmorphic disorder)
Bodysmorphophobia is a disorder in which a person is painfully focused on a flaw in his appearance that is invisible or almost invisible to others. Most often it is the skin, nose, hair, face shape or figure. Thoughts take up several hours a day, cause severe anxiety and trigger repetitive behavior: looking at oneself in the mirror or, conversely, avoiding mirrors, disguising oneself with cosmetics and clothes, constant comparisons, seeking confirmation from loved ones. A person may refuse to study, work and socialize, or save money for cosmetic procedures that do not bring relief. This is not vanity or whim, but a condition with a high level of suffering that requires the help of a specialist.

Dysthymia (chronic mild depression)
Dysthymia is a chronically low mood that lasts most days for two years or more. The symptoms are milder than with a major depressive episode, so the person continues to work and take care of the family, but does so through force, without joy and with a constant feeling of fatigue. It is the duration that makes the condition insidious: people get used to it and believe that they “just have that kind of character” and do not seek help for years. At the same time, dysthymia reduces the quality of life, impairs sleep, memory and relationships, and over time can give way to severe depression. The condition responds well to treatment - psychotherapy and, if necessary, medication support, which is selected by the doctor.

Gambling addiction (gambling addiction)
Gambling addiction, or gambling addiction, is a disorder in which gambling becomes uncontrollable and continues despite debts, conflicts and job loss. A person constantly thinks about the game, increases bets to get the same excitement, tries to win back after a loss, and hides the extent of losses from loved ones. The mechanism here is the same as in chemical addictions: excitement stimulates the brain's reward system, and the unpredictability of winning makes this stimulation especially strong. Online betting and phone games have dramatically accelerated the problem. The condition is treated with psychotherapy, and the earlier help is started, the less damage there is.

Hypochondria
Hypochondria is a persistent, disproportionate anxiety about one’s own health: a person is convinced that he has a serious illness, although examinations do not confirm this. Ordinary bodily sensations—palpitations after coffee, rumbling in the stomach, a mole, tingling—are perceived as signs of a dangerous illness. The peace of mind from good tests does not last long, and soon the search begins again. Often there are endless visits to doctors, self-examinations and hours of reading about symptoms on the Internet. This is not pretense or “suspiciousness”: suffering is real, and the quality of life is declining. The condition responds well to psychotherapy if you stop looking for confirmation and start treating anxiety.

Conversion (dissociative) disorder
Conversion disorder is a condition in which true neurological symptoms appear—weakness in an arm or leg, gait disturbance, loss of voice, seizures, numbness—but tests do not find structural damage to the nervous system. This is not a simulation or “fiction”: a person really cannot move a limb, because it is not the nervous tissue itself that is disrupted, but the functioning of the brain networks that control movement and attention. This condition is triggered by severe stress, conflict, trauma or a panic attack, although the connection with the event is not always obvious. The modern name is functional neurological disorder; it responds well to treatment if the diagnosis is made on time and explained to the patient clearly.

Mild cognitive impairment (memory loss)
Mild cognitive impairment is a decrease in memory, attention or other thinking functions that is noticeable to the person himself or loved ones and is confirmed by tests, but does not deprive him of independence in everyday life. It is an intermediate state between normal aging and dementia. The causes are varied: early stage Alzheimer's disease, vascular changes in the brain, depression and anxiety, vitamin B12 deficiency, hypothyroidism, sleep apnea, side effects of medications, alcohol abuse, hearing loss. Some of these reasons are completely removable. Mild cognitive impairment does not always progress: in some the condition remains stable or improves, in others it progresses to dementia. Therefore, it is important to be examined on time and monitored regularly.

Drug addiction
Drug dependence is a condition in which a prescribed drug becomes necessary in itself. Most often we are talking about sleeping pills and sedatives of the benzodiazepine group, some painkillers and cough medications. At first the medicine helps, then the previous dose stops working, the person increases it, and when he tries to stop, anxiety, insomnia, trembling and sweating return. A vicious circle is formed: the reception is continued not for the sake of effect, but so that it does not become bad. The main danger is sudden self-withdrawal, which, if dependent on sedatives, can cause convulsions. You need to stop taking it gradually and under the supervision of a doctor.
