Anemia in children
Anemia in children is a decrease in hemoglobin and the number of red blood cells, due to which tissues receive less oxygen. The vast majority of cases in childhood are associated with iron deficiency: reserves received from the mother are used up by 4–6 months, and the need for iron in a growing child is very high. The deficiency develops unnoticed and is initially manifested not by pallor, but by fatigue, moodiness, poor appetite and decreased attention. This is why it is important to detect iron deficiency early: long-term iron deficiency affects the development of the child. The diagnosis is confirmed by a blood test and ferritin, and treatment takes several months, even when hemoglobin has already returned to normal.

Anemia of chronic diseases
Anemia of chronic diseases is a decrease in hemoglobin, which develops not due to a lack of iron in the body, but due to prolonged inflammation. In case of chronic infections, autoimmune diseases, tumors and kidney diseases, the body deliberately hides iron in the depot and inhibits the production of red blood cells. At the same time, reserves are preserved or even increased, so ferritin in the analysis is normal or high, and serum iron is reduced. This is why conventional iron supplements often do not work and can cause harm. Anemia is usually mild, progresses slowly, and is manifested by fatigue and shortness of breath on exertion. The key to treatment is to find and control the disease that is driving the inflammation.

Antiphospholipid syndrome
Antiphospholipid syndrome is an autoimmune disorder in which the body produces antibodies against its own proteins associated with phospholipids in cell membranes. These antibodies make the blood prone to the formation of blood clots and disrupt the functioning of the placenta. The syndrome manifests itself in two groups of events: thrombosis of the veins and arteries at an unusual age or in an unusual location and complications of pregnancy - repeated miscarriages, intrauterine fetal death, severe preeclampsia. The diagnosis is made only when such a clinical event is combined with a double-confirmed analysis, because a single positive result occurs both after infections and while taking medications.

Aplastic anemia
Aplastic anemia is a rare but serious disease in which the bone marrow loses the ability to produce blood cells. All three germs of hematopoiesis suffer at once, therefore, in the analysis, red blood cells, leukocytes and platelets are reduced - this combination is called pancytopenia. A deficiency of red blood cells causes pallor, weakness and shortness of breath, a lack of platelets leads to bruising and bleeding, and a drop in neutrophils opens the way to severe infections. The most common cause is an autoimmune attack of one's own lymphocytes on bone marrow stem cells. The name “anemia” should not be misleading: this condition cannot be treated with iron supplements; specialized help from a hematologist is required.

von Willebrand disease
Von Willebrand disease is the most common inherited blood clotting disorder. It lacks von Willebrand factor, a protein that helps platelets adhere to the damaged vessel wall and protects coagulation factor VIII from destruction. Without it, the platelet “patch” becomes loose, so bleeding from small vessels does not stop for a long time. A typical picture is bruising from light touches, prolonged bleeding from the nose and gums, heavy and prolonged menstruation, unexpectedly heavy bleeding after tooth extraction or minor surgery. The disease occurs equally often in men and women, but is more noticeable in women due to menstruation and childbirth.

Hemolytic anemia
Hemolytic anemia is a group of conditions in which red blood cells are destroyed prematurely. Normally, a red cell lives about one hundred and twenty days; with hemolysis, it lasts a matter of weeks or even days. The bone marrow tries to compensate for the loss and releases young forms into the blood, so reticulocytes are increased. Hemoglobin is released from the disintegrating red blood cells, it turns into bilirubin, and the skin and whites of the eyes acquire a yellowish tint, and the urine may darken. The causes are congenital, when the defect lies in the cell itself, and acquired, when red blood cells are destroyed by the immune system, infection, medication or mechanical obstacle.

Hemolytic disease of the newborn
Hemolytic disease of the newborn occurs when the mother's antibodies destroy the baby's red blood cells. This is possible if the fetal blood is incompatible with the maternal Rh factor or group: the woman’s immune system perceives the child’s cells as foreign and produces antibodies against them that penetrate the placenta. The breakdown of red blood cells leads to anemia and the accumulation of bilirubin, which is why jaundice appears early, already on the first day, and increases rapidly. High bilirubin is dangerous for the newborn's brain, so the condition requires monitoring from birth. Modern pregnancy management and prophylactic administration of anti-Rhesus immunoglobulin have made severe forms rare.

Hemorrhagic vasculitis (Henoch-Schönlein purpura)
Hemorrhagic vasculitis, or Henoch-Schönlein purpura, is an inflammation of the smallest vessels, in which immune complexes with immunoglobulin A are deposited in their walls. Children of preschool and primary school age are most often affected, usually one to three weeks after a respiratory infection. Typical manifestations are a symmetrical rash on the legs and buttocks that does not fade with pressure, joint pain, cramping abdominal pain and kidney damage. In most children, the disease goes away within a few weeks, but the condition of the kidneys should be monitored for several more months after recovery.

Hemochromatosis (excess iron in the body)
Hemochromatosis is a condition in which the body, over the years, absorbs more iron from food than it needs and stores the excess in the organs. Most often, the cause is hereditary: due to genetic characteristics, the regulation of absorption in the intestine is disrupted. Iron accumulates in the liver, pancreas, heart, joints and pituitary gland and gradually damages them. Early complaints are nonspecific - fatigue, pain in the joints of the fingers, decreased libido, so the disease is often discovered by chance due to high ferritin. If the overload is identified before the development of cirrhosis and diabetes, treatment with simple bloodletting returns the person to normal life expectancy, and the organs are partially restored.

G6PD deficiency (favism)
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is an inherited condition of red blood cells in which they lack an enzyme that protects against oxidative damage. Most of the time a person is completely healthy, but when encountering a provocateur - some medications, fava beans, infection - red blood cells begin to be destroyed en masse. A hemolytic crisis develops: weakness, pallor, jaundice and dark, tea-colored urine. The gene is transmitted linked to the X chromosome, so men are more often affected; the condition is common in Mediterranean countries, Asia and Africa. It is impossible to cure a deficiency, but if you know the list of prohibited substances, life proceeds normally, and crises do not recur.
