Heavy menstruation (menorrhagia)
Menorrhagia is heavy and prolonged menstruation, during which blood loss is noticeably higher than usual and disrupts the usual rhythm of life. The guidelines are simple: menstruation lasts longer than seven days, you have to change a pad or tampon more often than once every two hours, you have large clots, you have to get up at night to change hygiene products, or you have to give up work and travel. The main danger is the gradual development of iron deficiency anemia with weakness, shortness of breath and hair loss. The reasons are varied: from fibroids and polyps to blood clotting disorders and thyroid diseases, so you should not endure and wait.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common malignant disease in children. In the bone marrow, the maturation of lymphocyte precursors is disrupted: immature blast cells stop developing, but continue to divide without stopping. They fill the bone marrow and displace normal hematopoiesis, so the child's red blood cells, normal white blood cells, and platelets all drop at the same time. Hence pallor and lethargy, bruises and pinpoint hemorrhages, prolonged fever and frequent infections. The peak incidence occurs between the ages of two and five years. The disease develops quickly, but it has become an example of the success of pediatric oncohematology: with the modern treatment protocol, most children recover.

Increased ESR
ESR—erythrocyte sedimentation rate—measures how quickly red blood cells sink to the bottom of a test tube in an hour. The rate increases when the amount of inflammatory proteins in the plasma increases, primarily fibrinogen and immunoglobulins. This is why ESR increases during infections, autoimmune diseases, anemia and tumors. But the indicator is nonspecific: it does not tell where and what is happening, and in itself is not a diagnosis. A moderate increase occurs during pregnancy, in the elderly, with obesity, and even with technical errors. The decision is made based on complaints, examination and other tests, and not on one number.

Increased bilirubin
Bilirubin is a yellow-brown pigment that is formed during the natural breakdown of red blood cells. The liver converts it into a form that is excreted with bile into the intestines. If too much bilirubin is produced, the liver does not have time to process it or bile cannot flow normally, its level in the blood rises, and with a significant increase, jaundice appears - yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes. Elevated bilirubin is not a diagnosis, but a signal: the cause may be harmless Gilbert's syndrome, but also hepatitis, a stone in the bile duct, hemolytic anemia or a tumor. The ratio of direct and indirect fractions and other indicators help to correctly understand the analysis.

Rh conflict during pregnancy
Rh conflict - incompatibility of the blood of mother and child according to the Rh factor. It is possible when a woman has Rh-negative blood, and the child inherits Rh-positive blood from his father. If fetal red blood cells enter the mother's bloodstream—usually during childbirth, abortion, miscarriage, hemorrhage, or injury—her immune system produces anti-Rh antibodies. In the next pregnancy, they penetrate the placenta and destroy the red blood cells of the Rh-positive child, causing hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn: anemia, edema, jaundice. The first pregnancy usually proceeds without conflict. Thanks to the timely administration of anti-Rhesus immunoglobulin, most cases can be prevented.

Sickle cell anemia
Sickle cell anemia is a hereditary disease in which hemoglobin is changed: instead of the usual one, hemoglobin S is produced. When the oxygen content decreases, such hemoglobin sticks together into long fibers, and the red blood cell turns from a flexible disk into a hard sickle. Such cells quickly break down, causing permanent anemia, and clog small vessels, cutting off blood flow to the tissues. Hence, the main manifestation of the disease is sudden attacks of severe pain in the bones, abdomen, and chest. The disease manifests itself from early childhood and requires lifelong monitoring, but modern approaches significantly reduce the frequency of crises and prolong life. The parents of the gene carrier are usually healthy themselves.

Bruises for no reason
A bruise, or hemorrhage, appears when blood leaks from small vessels into the subcutaneous tissue. Normally, this requires a blow, but sometimes bruises occur from the slightest pressure or are completely unnoticeable. There are two groups of reasons: weakness of the vascular wall and blood clotting disorders - from platelets or coagulation factors. In many healthy women, bruises on the thighs and legs appear easily, and this is a feature of the structure of the blood vessels. But if the bruises appear suddenly, there are many of them, they are large, combined with nosebleeds or heavy menstruation, an examination is needed. You should start with a general blood test and coagulation parameters.

Thalassemia
Thalassemia is a hereditary disease in which the formation of one of the protein chains of hemoglobin is impaired. Red blood cells turn out small, pale and fragile, live less than expected and carry oxygen worse. The forms are very different: when a carrier, a person feels healthy for decades, and only a blood test shows slight anemia with small red blood cells; in severe cases, anemia manifests itself already in the first or second year of life and requires regular transfusions. The disease is common in the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Central and South Asia. The main mistake is to take iron supplements for years: with thalassemia, they do not help and can harm.

Thrombosis during pregnancy
Pregnancy naturally increases blood clotting: this is how the body prepares for childbirth and protects itself from blood loss. The downside of this protection is an increased risk of blood clots in the veins, primarily in the deep veins of the legs and pelvis. The risk continues throughout pregnancy and is especially high in the first weeks after birth. Deep vein thrombosis is dangerous not only in itself: a detached blood clot can enter the pulmonary artery and cause a life-threatening condition. At the same time, it is not easy to recognize thrombosis, because almost all pregnant women experience swelling of the legs and heaviness at the end of the day. The key symptom is swelling and pain in one leg.

Thrombophilia
Thrombophilia is an increased tendency of blood to form blood clots. It can be hereditary, associated with the characteristics of coagulation genes, and acquired, the most significant example of which is antiphospholipid syndrome. It is important to understand: thrombophilia is not a disease that is felt, but a risk factor. By itself, it does not cause symptoms and appears only when a blood clot has already formed: in the veins of the legs, pulmonary artery or vessels of the placenta. Thrombosis almost always develops when a predisposition is combined with a provoking factor - surgery, prolonged immobility, pregnancy, or taking hormonal contraceptives. Therefore, tests are prescribed not for everyone, but for specific indications.
