Loss of appetite
Loss of appetite is a condition when the feeling of hunger disappears or food ceases to be enjoyable, and the usual portions seem too large. A short-term decrease in appetite during a cold, fever, stress, or after overeating is natural and goes away on its own. Doctors pay attention to another situation: appetite is reduced for weeks, a person eats noticeably less and loses weight. This may be due to stomach and liver diseases, chronic infections, thyroid disorders, depression, side effects of medications, and in the elderly - taste disturbances, dental problems and loneliness. The symptom itself is nonspecific, so it is not it that is important, but its duration and accompanying signs.

Proctitis
Proctitis is inflammation of the rectal mucosa. It is manifested by burning and pain in the anus, mucus and blood during bowel movements and a very characteristic symptom - false urges, when the intestine persistently asks for emptying, but there is almost no stool. The reasons are different: intestinal infections and sexually transmitted infections, inflammatory bowel diseases, radiation therapy of the pelvic organs, trauma and impaired blood supply. Treatment depends entirely on the cause, so examination by a proctologist and endoscopy are important, rather than selecting suppositories at random. Blood in the stool always requires exclusion of a tumor.

Pseudomembranous colitis (clostridial infection)
Pseudomembranous colitis is a severe inflammation of the colon caused by the bacterium Clostridioides difficile. It may be present in the intestines in small quantities, but begins to multiply rapidly when antibiotics destroy competing microflora. The bacterium releases toxins that damage the mucous membrane: characteristic yellowish deposits appear on it - pseudomembranes. The main manifestation is profuse, watery diarrhea that occurs during a course of antibiotics or for several weeks after it, often with abdominal pain and fever. The condition requires medical attention: self-medication with drugs that stop diarrhea is dangerous.

Stomach cancer
Gastric cancer is a malignant tumor that most often develops from cells of the gastric mucosa. The disease takes years to develop: chronic inflammation caused by Helicobacter pylori leads to mucosal atrophy, then to intestinal metaplasia and dysplasia - precancerous changes, against which a tumor appears. At an early stage, stomach cancer gives almost no symptoms or is disguised as gastritis, so it is often detected late. If detected at an early stage, the tumor can be removed even endoscopically, without an incision, and the prognosis is very good. The main methods of protection are treatment of H. pylori and timely gastroscopy in case of alarming signs.

Gallbladder cancer
Gallbladder cancer is a relatively rare but insidious tumor. Its main feature is that the early stages do not produce their own symptoms, and emerging complaints - heaviness in the right hypochondrium, nausea, bitterness in the mouth - have been explained for years by chronic cholecystitis and stones. That is why a significant part of cases are discovered by chance, during histological examination of a bladder removed due to stones. The main risk factor is long-term gallstone disease with chronic inflammation of the wall. Late signs are jaundice, weight loss, palpable mass under the ribs. The best results come from early detection, so findings on ultrasound cannot be ignored.

Liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma)
Liver cancer is a malignant tumor, most often represented by hepatocellular carcinoma, which grows from the main cells of the liver. It almost always occurs on altered tissue: with cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis B and C, fatty liver disease. The liver works for a long time even with significant damage, so the first complaints appear late, and sometimes the disease is disguised as a worsening of cirrhosis. The main practical conclusion: people from risk groups need to regularly undergo ultrasound of the liver, because a small tumor found can be treated radically, but an advanced one is much more difficult.

Esophageal cancer
Esophageal cancer is a malignant tumor that grows from the lining of the tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach. There are two main types: squamous cell carcinoma, more often associated with smoking, hot drinks and alcohol, and adenocarcinoma, which develops against the background of prolonged acid reflux and Barrett's esophagus. The danger of the disease is that the esophagus stretches well, and the first complaints appear when the lumen is already significantly narrowed. Therefore, difficulty swallowing solid food in an adult is always a reason to urgently do an endoscopy rather than wait.

Pancreatic cancer
Pancreatic cancer is a malignant tumor that in most cases develops from the cells of the pancreatic ducts (ductal adenocarcinoma). This is one of the most insidious tumors: the gland is located deep in the abdomen, and in the early stages the disease hardly manifests itself. When symptoms appear—jaundice, back pain, weight loss—the tumor has often already spread. If detected early, when the tumor can be removed surgically, the chances are much higher. Therefore, it is important to know the warning signs, especially in older people: painless jaundice, unexplained weight loss, and new-onset diabetes after age 50.

Small bowel cancer
The small intestine makes up most of the length of the digestive tract, but tumors rarely occur there—much less frequently than in the colon or stomach. It is believed that this is facilitated by the rapid passage of contents, a liquid environment and active local immune defense. It is this rarity that creates the main problem: such a tumor is the last thing people think about, and its symptoms—vague abdominal pain, nausea, weight loss, anemia—are characteristic of dozens of more common conditions. In addition, the small intestine is difficult to access for conventional endoscopic examinations. As a result, the diagnosis is often made late, after obstruction or bleeding.

Vomiting blood
Vomiting blood means bleeding from the esophagus, stomach or duodenum. The blood may be scarlet if the bleeding is fresh and profuse, or resemble coffee grounds if it has had time to act with hydrochloric acid. Any of these options is an emergency that requires calling an ambulance because the amount of blood loss is often greater than it appears.
