Enlarged liver (hepatomegaly)
Hepatomegaly is an increase in the size of the liver, which the doctor can detect during examination or, more often, with ultrasound. This is not an independent disease, but a sign that the liver is reacting to some process: fat accumulation, inflammation, blood stagnation, infection, blood or metabolic diseases. In most cases in adults, the cause is fatty liver disease due to excess weight, as well as alcohol and viral hepatitis. In children, the liver may be enlarged due to infections, including infectious mononucleosis. To find out the cause, blood tests and additional studies are needed - treatment is always aimed at the underlying disease.

Enlarged spleen (splenomegaly)
Splenomegaly is an enlargement of the spleen, an organ that filters blood, destroys old red blood cells and is involved in immune defense. This is not an independent disease, but a symptom that is always accompanied by a cause: infection, blood stagnation due to liver diseases, blood diseases, autoimmune and metabolic disorders. A slight increase usually does not manifest itself in any way and is detected by chance on an ultrasound. With significant growth, heaviness and pain appear in the left hypochondrium, rapid saturation during meals, and due to increased destruction of blood cells, hemoglobin, leukocytes and platelets decrease. An enlarged spleen is vulnerable to injury and requires care.

Functional dyspepsia
Functional dyspepsia is a recurring discomfort in the upper abdomen for which no ulcer, tumor or other visible lesion is found on examination. A person complains of heaviness after eating, early satiety, burning or pain in the stomach, but gastroscopy and tests are within normal limits. This is not a “fictional” disease: in such patients, the coordinated functioning of the stomach is disrupted - it relaxes less when food arrives, empties more slowly and is more sensitive to normal distension. The condition is very common, significantly reduces the quality of life, but responds well to treatment if organic causes are first excluded and then therapy is tailored to the leading symptom.

Helicobacter pylori infection
Helicobacter pylori is a spiral-shaped bacterium that can survive in the acidic environment of the stomach. It colonizes the mucous membrane and does not cause complaints in the majority of those infected for years, but maintains chronic inflammation - gastritis. It is this infection that is the main cause of gastric and duodenal ulcers and an important risk factor for stomach cancer. Infection usually occurs in childhood, in the family, through dishes, saliva and unwashed hands. The good news is that H. pylori is reliably detected by simple tests and in most cases is destroyed by a course of treatment - eradication, the effectiveness of which must be checked.

Cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer)
Cholangiocarcinoma is a malignant tumor that grows from the cells lining the bile ducts. It may be located inside the liver, at the confluence of the right and left ducts, or closer to the duodenum. The tumor blocks the flow of bile, so the most common first sign is jaundice without pain and fever, along with skin itching, dark urine and light-colored feces. The danger is that there are almost no early symptoms, and the disease is often detected late. At the same time, blockage of the duct requires a quick solution: the outflow of bile must be restored as soon as possible, otherwise cholangitis and liver failure will develop.

Cholangitis
Cholangitis is an inflammation of the bile ducts, which almost always develops against the background of impaired outflow of bile. When a duct is blocked by a stone, narrowing or tumor, pressure inside increases, bile stagnates, and intestinal bacteria multiply rapidly in the confined space. The infection can enter the blood, so acute cholangitis is an emergency. The classic picture is a combination of high fever with chills, pain in the right hypochondrium and jaundice, and in severe cases they are accompanied by a drop in pressure and confusion. Treatment is based on two principles: antibiotics and urgent restoration of bile outflow.

Chronic diarrhea
Chronic diarrhea is defined as diarrhea that lasts longer than 4 weeks: the stool becomes liquid or pasty, usually more than three times a day. Unlike acute diarrhea, which is most often caused by an infection and goes away on its own within a few days, long-term diarrhea almost always has a specific cause that requires investigation. This could be irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance, parasites, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatic or thyroid disease, side effects of medications, and in older people, intestinal tumors. Self-medication with fixatives only masks the problem and delays the correct diagnosis.

Chronic hepatitis
Chronic hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that lasts longer than six months. Its main feature is that for many years it gives almost no symptoms: the liver has no pain endings inside the tissue, so a person feels healthy while the working cells are gradually replaced by connective tissue. The result of an untreated process is fibrosis, cirrhosis and the risk of liver cancer. The main causes are hepatitis B, C and D viruses, alcohol, accumulation of fat in the liver due to metabolic disorders, autoimmune damage and medications. There is two good news: the disease can be detected by simple blood tests, and viral hepatitis C is curable today.

Chronic colitis
The word "colitis" means inflammation of the colon. This is not one diagnosis, but a general name for conditions with different causes: infectious, immune, vascular, medicinal, radiation. Chronic colitis is called when symptoms - abdominal pain, unstable stools, mucus, sometimes blood - persist for more than several weeks or recur regularly. Often, “chronic colitis” hides other diseases for years: ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, microscopic colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, or even a tumor. Therefore, the main task is not to find a “cure for colitis”, but to find out exactly what disease is causing the complaints.

Celiac disease (gluten intolerance)
Celiac disease is a chronic autoimmune disease in which, in genetically predisposed people, the gluten protein found in wheat, rye and barley triggers inflammation of the small intestinal mucosa. The intestinal villi gradually atrophy, and the body ceases to absorb nutrients normally. The disease can manifest itself at any age: in children - diarrhea, bloating and stunting; in adults - often not with intestinal complaints, but with iron deficiency anemia, osteoporosis, chronic fatigue or infertility. The only effective treatment is a strict lifelong gluten-free diet, during which the mucous membrane is restored and the symptoms go away.
