Vomiting in a child
Vomiting in children is a common symptom, which can be either a simple intestinal infection or a condition requiring a surgeon. Most often, the cause is acute gastroenteritis, and then vomiting is combined with loose stools and moderate fever. But vomiting also occurs with otitis media, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, concussions, appendicitis and acetone syndrome. For parents, two things are most important: correctly replenish fluid in small portions to prevent dehydration, and know the signs when the child needs to be seen by a doctor immediately.

Reactive pancreatitis in children
Reactive pancreatitis in children is a temporary reaction of the pancreas to another event: an intestinal or respiratory infection, an error in nutrition, taking medication, an exacerbation of a stomach or gallbladder disease. The gland swells, pain appears in the upper abdomen, nausea, sometimes vomiting and loose stools. Unlike true acute pancreatitis, the condition is usually mild and resolves within a few days with proper nutrition and treatment of the underlying cause. It is important to understand that an ultrasound finding such as reactive changes in the pancreas is not a diagnosis in itself: it is assessed together with complaints and the level of enzymes in the blood.

Gilbert's syndrome
Gilbert's syndrome is a common inherited disorder of bilirubin metabolism in which the liver is slower to bind the yellow pigment produced by the natural breakdown of red blood cells. As a result, the level of indirect (free) bilirubin in the blood periodically increases, and a person may experience a slight yellowing of the whites of the eyes and skin - more often after fasting, lack of sleep, stress, physical activity or a cold. At the same time, the liver remains healthy, liver enzymes are normal, and the duration and quality of life do not suffer. Gilbert's syndrome does not require treatment, but it is important to correctly confirm it so as not to miss liver and blood diseases.

Bacterial overgrowth syndrome (SIBO)
Normally, there are few bacteria in the small intestine: they are held back by stomach acid, bile, pancreatic enzymes and wave-like contractions that propel the contents forward. When these mechanisms are disrupted, microbes from the large intestine colonize the small intestine and begin to ferment food ahead of time. Gas, bloating, rumbling, unstable stools and discomfort after eating appear, and if it lasts for a long time, the absorption of vitamins and fats is impaired. This is bacterial overgrowth syndrome. It is rarely an independent disease: almost always there is another reason behind it that needs to be found, otherwise after treatment the problem returns.

Short bowel syndrome
Short bowel syndrome develops when, after a large portion of the small intestine is removed, the remaining portion is not sufficient for full absorption of water, salts and nutrients. The main reasons for operations are impaired blood supply to the intestines, Crohn's disease, trauma, volvulus, tumors, and in children - congenital defects and necrotizing enterocolitis. The condition is manifested by profuse diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss and multiple deficiencies of vitamins and microelements. The severity depends on how much intestine is left, which part is removed, and whether the colon is preserved. The body gradually adapts over one to two years, and proper management significantly improves the quality of life.

Malabsorption syndrome
Malabsorption syndrome is not a separate disease, but a set of signs that indicate that nutrients are poorly broken down or poorly absorbed in the intestines. A person can eat enough and still lose weight, experience weakness, suffer from heavy fatty stools and bloating. Over time, deficiencies develop: iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin D, calcium, protein - and anemia, brittle bones, swelling, skin and hair changes appear. There are dozens of reasons: from celiac disease and pancreatic insufficiency to the consequences of operations and parasitosis. The doctor’s task is to find a specific cause, because only its treatment returns absorption to normal.

Mallory-Weiss syndrome
Mallory-Weiss syndrome is a longitudinal tear of the mucous membrane at the border of the esophagus and stomach, which occurs with a sharp increase in pressure during vomiting, severe coughing or straining. The classic picture: a person vomits stomach contents several times, and then scarlet blood or clots appear in the vomit. Most often this occurs after an episode of alcohol abuse, poisoning, severe toxicosis of pregnancy, or repeated vomiting due to infection. The ruptures are superficial and in most cases the bleeding stops on its own, however, this syndrome can only be distinguished from other causes of gastrointestinal bleeding endoscopically, so you should always consult a doctor.

Mucus in stool
Mucus is produced by the cells of the intestinal mucosa: it lubricates the contents and protects the wall from damage. A small amount of it is always present in the stool, just usually unnoticed. A reason to think about it is clearly visible mucus: transparent or whitish strands on the surface of the stool, mucus separate from the stool, especially if this is repeated. The reasons can be harmless - constipation, dietary errors, hemorrhoids, irritable bowel syndrome. But the same picture occurs with intestinal infections and inflammatory bowel diseases. The main landmarks are blood, fever, weight loss and duration of complaints: they determine how urgently an examination is needed.

Stricture (stenosis) of the esophagus
Esophageal stricture is a persistent narrowing of its lumen, due to which food no longer passes freely into the stomach. Most often, the narrowing is cicatricial: it forms where the mucous membrane has been damaged for a long time by acid during reflux disease, or at the site of a chemical burn. The main symptom is dysphagia: a feeling that food stops behind the breastbone. It begins with solid foods, meat and bread, and as it narrows it also affects liquids. A person begins to chew longer, drink every bite, eliminate foods and lose weight. A stricture always requires examination: similar complaints may hide a tumor of the esophagus, so endoscopy with biopsy is mandatory.

Nausea and vomiting
Nausea is the unpleasant sensation of vomiting, and vomiting is a protective reflex in which the contents of the stomach are thrown out. These symptoms are triggered by the vomiting center in the brain stem and can be caused not only by diseases of the stomach and intestines, but also by poisoning, infections, pregnancy, migraines, diseases of the vestibular system, kidneys, heart, taking medications and even stress. A single vomiting after an error in food is usually not dangerous. But repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, severe abdominal pain, signs of dehydration, or nausea that lasts for weeks require a doctor's evaluation—sometimes urgently.
