Gastrointestinal bleeding
Gastrointestinal bleeding is the flow of blood into the lumen of the digestive tract, from the esophagus to the rectum. It can be obvious when blood is visible in the vomit or stool, and hidden when the only sign is increasing anemia. According to the level of bleeding, they are divided into upper, from the esophagus, stomach and duodenum, and lower, from the small and large intestine. The danger is that a person can lose a significant amount of blood before obvious signs appear: first there is weakness, dizziness, palpitations and pallor. Any suspicion of bleeding is a reason to immediately call 103 rather than observe at home.

Constipation during pregnancy
Constipation during pregnancy is a rare, difficult or incomplete bowel movement that occurs in approximately every third woman. The main reason is that progesterone relaxes the smooth muscles of the intestine and slows down the movement of contents, and in the later stages, the enlarged uterus mechanically compresses the intestine. Additional contributions include iron and calcium supplements, decreased physical activity, and lack of fluids. Constipation does not just cause discomfort: straining provokes exacerbation of hemorrhoids and anal fissures. It is almost always possible to cope with it with nutrition, regimen and mild remedies selected by the doctor.

Constipation in a child
Constipation in a child means not only rare stools, but also hard, painful or incomplete stools. It is not the calendar that matters, but the consistency and how the child tolerates bowel movements. In the vast majority of children, constipation is functional: after a painful episode, the child begins to restrain the urge, the feces in the rectum thicken, and the circle closes. Less commonly, bowel retention is caused by thyroid disease, celiac disease, intestinal abnormalities, or taking certain medications. Functional constipation responds well to treatment, but takes time: drinking regimen, fiber, toilet habits and emollients prescribed by a doctor, which are safe for long-term use, are important.

Heartburn during pregnancy
Heartburn during pregnancy is a burning sensation behind the breastbone that occurs when the acidic contents of the stomach are thrown into the esophagus. Most women face this, especially in the second half of their term. The reason is twofold: progesterone relaxes the muscular ring between the esophagus and the stomach, and the growing uterus lifts the stomach up and increases pressure in the abdominal cavity. Heartburn is unpleasant, interferes with sleep and eating, but in itself does not harm the baby and usually goes away immediately after birth. It can be alleviated by changing your diet and regimen, and in case of severe complaints, the doctor selects safe medications.

Hiccups
Hiccups are a sudden involuntary contraction of the diaphragm, behind which the glottis instantly closes, hence the characteristic sound. This is a reflex involving the phrenic and vagus nerves and centers in the brain stem. Normal hiccups last for minutes and are triggered by overeating, carbonated drinks, alcohol, sudden changes in food temperature, laughter, and rapid swallowing of air. Such hiccups are harmless and go away on their own. Persistent hiccups require attention - those that last longer than two days: they may be caused by reflux disease, hiatal hernia, irritation of the nerve in the chest, diseases of the central nervous system, metabolic disorders and side effects of medications.

Ischemic colitis
Ischemic colitis is damage to the wall of the colon due to a temporary or permanent decrease in blood flow. This is the most common form of intestinal ischemia, and it occurs mainly in people over 60 years of age with heart and vascular diseases. A typical scenario: sudden cramping pain in the abdomen, usually on the left, an urgent urge to stool, and a few hours later - an admixture of blood. Most episodes are mild and resolve within a few days with supportive treatment. However, there is a severe variant with necrosis of the intestinal wall, requiring emergency surgery. Therefore, any abdominal pain with blood in the stool in an elderly person is a reason to urgently consult a doctor.

Calcifications in the liver
Calcifications in the liver are dense deposits of calcium salts in the tissue of the organ, which on ultrasound appear as bright inclusions with a shadow behind. Most often, this is not an independent disease, but a trace of a previously suffered process: a focus of inflammation, an old hematoma after an injury, a dead parasite or a treated infection. The body fences off such scars with calcium, and they remain for life, without affecting the functioning of the liver. Therefore, a randomly found single calcification during normal tests usually does not require either treatment or diet. Other situations require attention: multiple inclusions, growth of education, changes in tests, or complaints of pain and weight loss.

Candidiasis of the esophagus and intestines
Esophageal candidiasis is a fungal inflammation of the mucous membrane caused by yeast-like fungi of the genus Candida. These fungi live in small numbers in the mouth and intestines of healthy people and only become a problem when local or general defenses are weakened. The typical picture is pain and burning when swallowing, a scratching sensation behind the sternum, and sometimes a white coating in the mouth. Endoscopy reveals characteristic white plaques on the red mucosa. Esophageal candidiasis is almost never an accident: it indicates reduced immunity, uncompensated diabetes mellitus, a recent course of antibiotics or the use of inhaled hormones. Therefore, not only the fungus is treated, but also the cause.

Liver cyst
A liver cyst is a cavity with fluid inside the liver tissue. Most often, this is a simple cyst: a congenital feature of the structure of the bile ducts, which is not related to lifestyle, does not hurt and is discovered by chance during an ultrasound of the abdominal cavity. Such cysts do not develop into cancer and in most people do not require any treatment, only periodic monitoring. However, the general word “cyst” also hides other formations: parasitic hydatid cyst, multiple cysts in polycystic disease, as well as rare cystic tumors. It is important to distinguish them, and ultrasound, tests and, in doubtful cases, tomography are usually sufficient.

Pancreatic cyst
A pancreatic cyst is a confined cavity with fluid inside or near the pancreatic tissue. Most often, this is a pseudocyst: it forms several weeks after acute pancreatitis or injury, when the accumulation of pancreatic juice is delimited by a dense wall. Less common are true cystic tumors, some of which can turn into cancer over time. That is why any cystic formation of the gland requires not only observation by ultrasound, but also a clarifying study. Small asymptomatic cysts are usually left untouched, and surgery is suggested for pain, compression of neighboring organs, suppuration and signs of tumor growth.
