When to remove the stent
The duration of the stent is determined by the doctor during installation: after ureteroscopy and contact lithotripsy - 1-3 weeks, after pyeloplasty or reimplantation of the ureter - 4-6 weeks, for strictures and tumors - planned replacement every 3-6 months. Signs that it is time to remove or replace the stent: increased pain and urge, blood in the urine, temperature, encrustation on the image. A stent that has expired for months can “grow” into the mucosa and become covered with stones - then simple removal is impossible and lithotripsy is required.
How does the removal work?
The patient is positioned on a urological chair, and an anesthetic gel is injected into the urethra. After 5-10 minutes, the doctor inserts a cystoscope, finds the lower curl of the stent in the bladder, grabs it with forceps and removes the entire stent - this takes a few seconds. When using a flexible cystoscope, the procedure is well tolerated in men. If the stent was installed with an external thread, it is removed by simple pulling without cystoscopy. After removal, the patient can immediately go home.
After removal
On the first day, there may be a slight burning sensation when urinating and a pinkish tint to the urine. Drink more water; If there is discomfort, the doctor will prescribe a uroantiseptic for 2-3 days. After 1–2 weeks, a control ultrasound of the kidneys is recommended: it confirms that the outflow of urine has been restored and there is no dilation of the pelvis.
