Features of the material

The chemical glass ionomer hardens evenly throughout its thickness, so it is convenient to add it in one portion into a deep cavity - unlike a composite, which requires layer-by-layer illumination. The material is biocompatible, well tolerated by the pulp and releases fluoride. The main applications are isolating linings, temporary and permanent fillings in chewing teeth with limited load, as well as sealing canals during delayed treatment.

What is tooth restoration

Restoration is the restoration of the shape, function and appearance of a tooth using composite materials directly in the oral cavity, in one visit. Unlike a crown, it does not require grinding of the entire tooth and preserves a maximum of its own tissues.

A separate task is the restoration of the stump: when only the walls or the root remain of the tooth, the doctor creates a foundation on which a crown is subsequently placed.

How to restore the stump

  • composite without support - when strong tooth walls are preserved
  • anchor pin with composite - a metal pin in the channel as a support
  • fiberglass pin with composite - elasticity is close to the tooth tissue, the risk of root splitting is lower
  • cast stump inlay - in case of significant destruction, manufactured in the laboratory

Materials

Light-curing composites provide better aesthetics and strength, while glass ionomer cements provide chemical adhesion to dentin and fluoride release. Glass ionomer is often used as a spacer under a composite, for cervical defects and in pediatric practice.

Frequently asked questions

How does restoration differ from a regular filling?+
Volume and task: the filling closes the cavity, the restoration recreates the anatomy, transparency and color of the tooth, including the cutting edge and individual features.
How long does an art restoration last?+
On average 5–8 years. The period depends on the bite, hygiene and habits: smoking and strong tea accelerate the tarnishing of the surface.
Is a pin needed when restoring a stump?+
Only if your own walls are not enough. The pin does not strengthen the tooth by itself; it only holds the filling material in place.
Is it possible to restore a tooth from which the root remains?+
Often yes - with the help of a stump inlay and a crown, provided that the canals are treated, and the root walls are of sufficient thickness and there is 1.5–2 mm of tissue above the gum.
