Diagnosis on the table
Technology: a fragment of tissue is frozen, sections are rapidly stained, the morphologist answers the surgeon’s specific question (“is there tumor growth?”, “Is the edge clean?”). This saves the patient from two-stage operations: in case of a benign response, the volume remains minimal, in case of a malignant response, the radical stage is immediately performed according to a plan agreed upon in advance. The final conclusion on paraffin blocks is confirmed by the rapid response after a few days (>95% agreement).
Indications
- verification of any removed tissues and biopsies is a mandatory standard;
- urgent intraoperative diagnostics - decision of the volume on the table;
- hormone therapy for prostate and breast cancer with LHRH analogues (Zoladex);
- review of finished glasses - a second opinion of a morphologist.
Morphology is the foundation of oncology
Not a single oncological diagnosis exists without morphological confirmation: histology determines the type of tumor, degree of malignancy, resection margins, node involvement, and IHC determines the receptor profile, on which the choice of therapy depends. Urgent intraoperative examination allows the surgeon to change the volume based on the fact (cleanliness of the edges, nature of the finding). Depot hormone therapy (Zoladex) is a minute-long outpatient procedure, critically performed just in time - the clinic keeps a calendar and reminds.
