Elevated liver enzymes (ALT, AST)
ALT (alanine aminotransferase) and AST (aspartate aminotransferase) are enzymes that are found inside liver cells, and AST is also found in muscles and the heart. When cells are damaged, enzymes are released into the blood and their levels in the test increase. Elevated transaminases are one of the most common reasons for visiting a gastroenterologist. The most common cause is fatty liver disease associated with excess weight, as well as alcohol, viral hepatitis B and C, medications and dietary supplements. Sometimes AST rises after intense exercise, unrelated to the liver. The degree of increase, the ratio of enzymes and other indicators help the doctor find the cause.

Increased bilirubin
Bilirubin is a yellow-brown pigment that is formed during the natural breakdown of red blood cells. The liver converts it into a form that is excreted with bile into the intestines. If too much bilirubin is produced, the liver does not have time to process it or bile cannot flow normally, its level in the blood rises, and with a significant increase, jaundice appears - yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes. Elevated bilirubin is not a diagnosis, but a signal: the cause may be harmless Gilbert's syndrome, but also hepatitis, a stone in the bile duct, hemolytic anemia or a tumor. The ratio of direct and indirect fractions and other indicators help to correctly understand the analysis.

High cholesterol (dyslipidemia)
The phrase “I have high cholesterol” sounds like a death sentence, although cholesterol itself is not poison or metabolic waste. It is a building material for cell membranes, bile acids, vitamin D and sex hormones, and the body is so interested in it that it produces it itself, regardless of food. The problem is not cholesterol per se, but the carriers in which it travels through the blood: low-density lipoproteins leave it in the artery wall, high-density lipoproteins take it back. Gilbert's syndrome
Gilbert's syndrome is a common inherited disorder of bilirubin metabolism in which the liver is slower to bind the yellow pigment produced by the natural breakdown of red blood cells. As a result, the level of indirect (free) bilirubin in the blood periodically increases, and a person may experience a slight yellowing of the whites of the eyes and skin - more often after fasting, lack of sleep, stress, physical activity or a cold. At the same time, the liver remains healthy, liver enzymes are normal, and the duration and quality of life do not suffer. Gilbert's syndrome does not require treatment, but it is important to correctly confirm it so as not to miss liver and blood diseases.
