Neuroendocrine tumors (carcinoid)
Neuroendocrine tumors develop from special cells scattered throughout the body, which combine the properties of nerve and hormone-producing ones. They most often occur in the small intestine, appendix, rectum, pancreas and lungs. Historically they were called carcinoids. Many such tumors grow slowly over years and are discovered by chance, for example, in a vermiform appendix removed for appendicitis. Some tumors secrete biologically active substances, causing carcinoid syndrome: sudden flushes of heat to the face and neck, watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and sometimes difficulty breathing. For years these complaints have been mistaken for menopause, allergies or irritable bowel syndrome.

Wilms tumor (nephroblastoma)
Wilms tumor, or nephroblastoma, is the most common malignant kidney tumor in children. It develops from embryonic kidney tissue that has not completed its maturation, so the disease is characteristic of an early age: most cases occur between two and five years. The tumor grows inside the kidney, usually quickly, but remains painless for a long time, and most often it is discovered by parents who accidentally feel a dense formation in the abdomen while bathing or dressing the child. Despite its malignant nature, modern treatment gives very good results: the vast majority of children with a localized form recover.

Brain tumor
A brain tumor is the growth of abnormal cells in the brain tissue or its membranes. Primary tumors arise in the brain itself, the meninges, the pituitary gland, or the cranial nerves; secondary - metastases of cancer of other organs; in adults they are more common. Tumors can be benign, such as most meningiomas, or malignant, such as glioblastoma. However, even a benign tumor can be dangerous due to the pressure on vital structures in the limited space of the skull. Symptoms depend on the location and rate of growth: increasing headache, epileptic seizures, weakness, speech and vision disorders, personality changes. The main diagnostic method is MRI with contrast, and the type of tumor is determined by histological examination. Treatment is selected by a team of neurosurgeon, oncologist and radiotherapist.

Mediastinal tumor
The mediastinum is the space in the center of the chest between the lungs, where the heart and large vessels, trachea, esophagus, thymus gland, nerves and lymph nodes are located. The formation here is not a diagnosis, but a finding, which can be behind many different conditions: from a harmless cyst and an enlarged lymph node due to infection to lymphoma, thymoma, germ cell or nerve tumor. A significant proportion of such formations are benign, and in adults, almost half are discovered by chance during a chest x-ray. The key to the solution is the location: anterior, middle or posterior mediastinum, since each section has its own set of probable tumors.

Osteosarcoma
Osteosarcoma is the most common malignant bone tumor that develops from cells that normally form bone tissue. Tumor cells continue to produce immature bone, but they do so chaotically, destroying the normal structure. The disease primarily affects adolescents and young adults during periods of intense skeletal growth, and its favorite sites are areas of bone near the knee joint and the upper part of the humerus. The main difficulty is that the first complaints are nonspecific: aching pain and swelling, which have long been explained as a bruise, sprain or “growing pains.” Pain that does not go away for weeks and gets worse at night should be alarming.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common malignant disease in children. In the bone marrow, the maturation of lymphocyte precursors is disrupted: immature blast cells stop developing, but continue to divide without stopping. They fill the bone marrow and displace normal hematopoiesis, so the child's red blood cells, normal white blood cells, and platelets all drop at the same time. Hence pallor and lethargy, bruises and pinpoint hemorrhages, prolonged fever and frequent infections. The peak incidence occurs between the ages of two and five years. The disease develops quickly, but it has become an example of the success of pediatric oncohematology: with the modern treatment protocol, most children recover.

A lesion (nodule) in the lung
A lesion, or nodule, in the lung is a rounded compaction, usually up to 3 centimeters in size, which is visible on a computed tomography scan or x-ray. Such findings are common, especially when CT is performed for another reason, and in most cases they turn out not to be a tumor, but a trace of previous inflammation, a scar, an area of tuberculous changes or a benign formation. Nevertheless, the finding cannot be left unattended: some nodes require observation, and some require clarifying examination. Tactics are determined by size, density, shape of the edges and risk factors, primarily smoking and age. The main tool is comparison of images over time.

Barrett's esophagus
Barrett's esophagus is a condition in which the normal squamous epithelium of the lower esophagus is replaced by intestinal-type epithelium. This is a protective restructuring in response to many years of acidic stomach contents: the new mucosa is more resistant to acid, but its cells are more prone to further changes. The condition itself does not hurt and does not have specific symptoms, but it is detected during gastroscopy in people with prolonged heartburn. The significance of Barrett's esophagus is that it is considered precancerous: the risk of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus is increased, although the vast majority of patients never develop a tumor. Therefore, reflux treatment and regular monitoring are needed.

Squamous cell skin cancer
Squamous cell skin cancer is the second most common malignant skin tumor after basal cell. It develops from cells of the surface layer of the skin and occurs mainly in areas that have received the sun for years: the face, ears, lower lip, scalp in balding men, the back of the hands. It looks like a hard nodule, a rough crusty plaque, or an ulcer that does not heal for weeks and bleeds easily. Unlike basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma can metastasize to the lymph nodes, so the earlier the diagnosis is made and the tumor is removed, the higher the chance of complete cure.

Cervical polyp
Cervical polyp is a benign growth of the mucous membrane of the cervical canal, which protrudes into the lumen of the canal or into the vagina. This is one of the most common findings during a routine gynecological examination, and in most cases it is not dangerous. But the polyp has two features, because of which it is not ignored: it produces bloody discharge, which a woman easily mistakes for a cycle failure, and it is externally indistinguishable from rare malignant formations - only histology after removal gives the final answer.
