Glossalgia (burning tongue)
Glossalgia is a burning, tingling or rawness of the tongue with normal-looking mucous membrane. A person describes the feeling as if the tongue was burned with hot tea or sprinkled with pepper, but the doctor finds no ulcers, no plaque, or inflammation. The burning sensation often affects the tip and lateral edges of the tongue, lips, palate, intensifies in the evening and noticeably weakens while eating - this is what distinguishes glossalgia from most inflammatory diseases of the mouth. Similar complaints may include deficiency of iron and B vitamins, diabetes mellitus, dry mouth, fungal infection and reaction to dentures. When all these reasons are excluded, we are talking about an independent burning mouth syndrome associated with disruption of the sensory nerves.

Headache
Headache is one of the most common complaints in the world, and in the vast majority of cases it is primary: it is a disease in itself, and not a sign of a dangerous brain disease. The primary ones include tension headaches, migraines and cluster headaches. Secondary pain occurs due to another disease: infection, injury, high blood pressure, sinus, eye or neck problems, and they are much less common. The practical approach is structured as follows: the doctor, based on a description of the pain and examination, determines whether there are alarming signs, and only if they are present, prescribes neuroimaging. It is also important that frequent use of painkillers can turn episodic pain into daily pain.

Headache during pregnancy
Headaches during pregnancy are very common. In the first trimester, it is usually associated with hormonal changes, lack of sleep, nausea and dehydration, giving up the usual coffee and a decrease in sugar levels during long breaks in food. Most of these pains are harmless and can be treated with simple measures. However, pregnancy is a situation where any new or changing headache needs to be assessed differently than usual. In the second half of pregnancy, a headache may be the first sign of preeclampsia, a high blood pressure condition that is dangerous for both the woman and the baby. Therefore, if the pain is severe or unusual, you should measure your blood pressure and contact your doctor.

Double vision (diplopia)
Diplopia is the perception of one object as two. Normally, the brain merges images from both eyes into a single picture; To do this, the eyes must move in strict coordination. If the work of the eye muscles or the nerves that control them is disrupted, the axes of the eyes diverge, and the person sees two images. Less commonly, double vision occurs in one eye and is associated with optics - clouding of the lens, cornea, dryness. Diplopia is not an independent disease, but a symptom, and its value is that it indicates to the doctor the cause: from banal eye fatigue to conditions requiring emergency care.

Dementia (senile dementia)
Dementia is a permanent decline in memory, thinking and other cognitive functions, due to which a person gradually loses the ability to cope with everyday activities. This is not a natural part of aging: forgetfulness in the elderly is normal, but with dementia, impairments increase and interfere with living independently. The most common cause is Alzheimer's disease, followed by vascular dementia after strokes and chronic cerebral ischemia, dementia with Lewy bodies and frontotemporal form. Some dementia-like conditions are reversible: vitamin B12 deficiency, decreased thyroid function, depression and medication side effects. Therefore, early screening makes practical sense.

Dementia with Lewy bodies
Dementia with Lewy bodies is one of the most common forms of dementia after Alzheimer's disease. Protein inclusions accumulate in nerve cells, which disrupt the functioning of the cortex and subcortical structures. It is distinguished by a peculiar set of symptoms: pronounced fluctuations in clarity of consciousness and attention during the day, repeated detailed visual hallucinations, slowness and stiffness of movements, as well as restless sleep with screams and active movements long before the onset of forgetfulness. A very important feature is the extremely high sensitivity to some neuroleptics, which can cause a sharp deterioration in such patients. Therefore, the correct diagnosis directly affects the safety of treatment.

Dermatomyositis and polymyositis
Dermatomyositis and polymyositis are autoimmune diseases in which the immune system attacks its own muscles. Symmetrical weakness of the muscles located closer to the body develops: it becomes difficult to climb stairs, get out of a chair, raise your arms, and wash your hair. With dermatomyositis, a characteristic rash is added to the muscle manifestations: purple coloration and swelling of the eyelids, red scaly rashes over the joints of the fingers, redness on the neck and chest. Weakness develops over weeks or months and is usually not accompanied by pain, which distinguishes these diseases from polymyalgia rheumatica. Treatment takes time, but if started promptly, most patients return to normal activities.

Vitamin B deficiency
B vitamins are several different substances involved in energy metabolism, nervous system function, and hematopoiesis. The deficiency of each of them gives its own picture, but there is one thing in common: nerves and blood suffer. Lack of B12 and folate causes large red blood cell anemia, and B12 deficiency further damages nerve fibers, leading to numbness, tingling and unsteady gait. B1 deficiency is dangerous if you abuse alcohol and can seriously impair the functioning of your brain and heart. Deficiencies rarely arise out of nowhere: there is usually a reason - nutrition, intestinal disease, medications or alcohol, and this also needs to be found.

Magnesium deficiency
Magnesium is involved in hundreds of processes: muscle and nerve function, signal transmission in the heart, energy production, and maintaining bone strength. Severe deficiency does not develop from a lack of diet, but most often due to losses: with prolonged vomiting and diarrhea, alcohol abuse, taking diuretics and some other drugs, with intestinal diseases and poorly controlled diabetes. Manifestations are nonspecific: cramps in the calves, muscle twitching, weakness, irritability, heart rhythm disturbances. The difficulty is that the blood test reflects only a small part of the magnesium in the body, so the doctor makes the decision on treatment based on the totality of the picture, and not on one number.

Diabetic polyneuropathy
Diabetic polyneuropathy is damage to peripheral nerves due to diabetes. Long-term elevated sugar damages the small vessels that feed the nerve fibers and the fibers themselves: the longest nerves are affected first, so the symptoms begin from the feet and rise up like “socks”, later the hands join. A person feels a burning sensation, tingling, chilliness or, conversely, loses sensitivity and ceases to notice injuries and burns. It is the loss of protective sensitivity that underlies diabetic foot ulcers and subsequent amputations.
