Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease of the arteries, in which cholesterol and other fats are deposited in their walls, inflammation develops, and plaque forms. At first, it almost does not interfere with blood flow, but over time it narrows the lumen of the vessel, and the organ begins to receive less oxygen under load. The most dangerous thing is a plaque rupture: a blood clot forms on its surface, which can completely block the artery. This is how myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and acute leg ischemia occur. The process goes on for years and decades without symptoms, so the disease often manifests itself for the first time as a vascular catastrophe. At the same time, atherosclerosis is well controlled: lifestyle and properly selected treatment significantly reduce the risk of complications.

Atherosclerosis of the aorta
Atherosclerosis of the aorta is the deposition of cholesterol plaques and calcium salts in the wall of the largest vessel in the body. The process develops over decades and does not give any complaints for a long time, so most often it is found by chance: on a chest x-ray, ultrasound or tomography they describe “consolidation and calcification of the aorta.” In itself, such a conclusion is not a diagnosis of heart disease, but a marker of general atherosclerosis: if plaques are in the aorta, they, as a rule, are also in the vessels of the heart, neck and legs. The main dangers are expansion of the aorta with the formation of an aneurysm, detachment of plaque particles with blockage of small arteries and narrowing of the outgoing branches. Therefore, the find is not ignored, but used as a reason to assess the risk.

Atherosclerosis of cerebral vessels
Atherosclerosis of cerebral vessels is the deposition of cholesterol plaques in the walls of arteries that carry blood to the brain: carotid, vertebral and intracranial. Plaques gradually narrow the lumen of the vessel, and when damaged, blood clots form on their surface, particles of which are carried into the brain. For a long time, the disease proceeds unnoticed and is detected by chance during an ultrasound scan of the vessels of the neck. The first manifestation is often a transient ischemic attack or stroke. Atherosclerosis is a systemic process, so in such people the vessels of the heart and legs are often affected. The progression can be slowed down: lowering LDL cholesterol, controlling blood pressure and sugar, and quitting smoking significantly reduce the risk of stroke, and in cases of severe carotid artery stenosis, surgery is possible.

Atrioventricular block
Atrioventricular block is a slowdown or complete cessation of the electrical impulse from the atria to the ventricles. Normally, the impulse passes through the atrioventricular node with a slight delay, and the heart contracts smoothly. During blockade, some impulses are delayed or do not reach at all, and the ventricles contract less frequently than necessary. Mild, first degree is often an incidental finding on the ECG in healthy and trained people and does not require treatment. Complete blockade, on the contrary, is dangerous: it causes a rare pulse, fainting and requires the installation of a pacemaker. The degree and tactics can be determined only by ECG and daily monitoring.

Bundle branch block
Bundle branch block is a violation of the conduction of electrical impulses along the right or left branches of the conduction system, which distributes excitation to the ventricles of the heart. Because of this, one of the ventricles is excited late, which is clearly visible on the ECG. The blockade itself usually does not cause complaints and is often discovered by chance. Incomplete blockade of the right leg is often found in healthy people and is considered a normal variant. Complete blockade of the left leg, on the contrary, almost always indicates heart disease: hypertension, coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy or aortic valve disease. A blockade that appears for the first time against the background of chest pain is especially dangerous - it can be a sign of a heart attack and requires immediate call 103. The prognosis depends on the underlying disease.

Kawasaki disease
Kawasaki disease is an acute inflammation of the walls of small and medium-sized arteries, which develops mainly in children under five years of age. The cause has not been clearly established; suggest an excessive immune response to infection in a genetically predisposed child. The disease begins with a high temperature, which lasts longer than usual and is almost not reduced by antipyretics, then redness of the eyes without purulent discharge, bright lips and a crimson tongue, a rash, swelling of the palms and feet, and an enlarged cervical lymph node are added. The main danger is damage to the coronary arteries of the heart with the formation of aneurysms. Timely treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin dramatically reduces this risk, so early diagnosis is important.

Chest pain
Chest pain is one of the most alarming complaints, and this is justified: it can be caused by either a harmless muscle spasm or a myocardial infarction. The chest contains the heart and large vessels, lungs and pleura, esophagus, ribs, muscles and nerves, so the source of pain is determined by its nature, duration and connection with exercise, breathing, movement and food intake. Pressing pain behind the sternum when walking, radiating to the arm or jaw, requires immediate help. Stitching pain, which intensifies when turning the torso or applying pressure, is most often associated with the muscles and ribs. The main rule is simple: if the pain occurs for the first time, is very severe or is accompanied by shortness of breath, call 103 rather than wait.

Pain in the heart
The complaint “heart pain” is heard very often, but real heart pain looks different than it is usually imagined. Classic ischemic pain is not a pinpoint tingling sensation on the left, but a pressure or burning sensation in the center of the chest that occurs during exercise, lasts several minutes and goes away with rest. Tingling in the nipple area, which gets worse when you turn your body or take a deep breath, is much more likely to be associated with the ribs, muscles and nerves. However, you should not diagnose yourself: arrhythmias, pericarditis, high blood pressure and anxiety give similar sensations. The first step is always the same - an ECG and a doctor’s examination.

Bradycardia
Bradycardia is a decrease in heart rate of less than 60 beats per minute. The number itself does not mean illness: in trained people, athletes, and during sleep, a pulse of 45–55 beats per minute is the norm if the person feels well. Pathological bradycardia occurs when the sinus node produces impulses poorly or they are blocked on their way to the ventricles. The reasons are age-related changes in the conduction system, coronary heart disease, previous heart attack, hypothyroidism, disturbances in potassium levels, as well as medications that slow down the pulse. The danger is that with a very rare rhythm, the brain and organs do not receive enough blood: weakness, dizziness, and fainting appear. Such symptoms require examination by a cardiologist, and in case of loss of consciousness, call 103.

Sudden cardiac arrest
Sudden cardiac arrest is an abrupt cessation of effective heart function, causing blood to flow to the brain and organs. A person loses consciousness in a matter of seconds, breathing disappears or becomes rare, convulsive, and the pulse cannot be detected. The most common cause is ventricular fibrillation due to a heart attack or chronic heart disease. Without help, brain cells begin to die within a few minutes, so the outcome is determined by the first minutes. Immediately calling an ambulance by number 103, chest compressions and defibrillation greatly increase the chances of survival.
